I'm trying out hardstyle. The kick is placeholder, obviously it's not a hard kick, but I wanna know if I'm on the right track with the style. Yes, I did post this in the last thread.

Btw guise R8 my 5 minute track I made for fun. Everything is placeholder t b h.

Yeah, I don't know the genre, this was just a super fast little jam, nothing more.

If you are interested in classical stuff be sure to check out the /comp/osition threads when they are live.

Eh, I'm working slowly on a few bigger pieces when I'm in the mood, but I'll post those little ones I posted in /comp/ before.

https://clyp.it/l435kuc5

https://clyp.it/xbrd5o24

I still didn't touch the middle part of this one... I was experimenting but can't leave it like this, it is in a different style and I need to fix the transition from 4 to 3 beats.

And then here's me again trying to mix my electronic child...

https://clyp.it/v4ge4ux0

I can say that I like the part starting from 1:30 (especially the main melody starting at 2:00), but the beginning is more progressive background stuff, I need to spice things up. Oh, the end is just a playing around, I cut it wrong. Though I haven't worked on this for a while...I mean, you guys can see the dates in their names, time flies... Also, thing with these electronic works of mine is that they are almost not mixed at all, or have kinda bad placeholder random sample synths that sounded good enough for the moment, so it's harder to imagine the finished work. But I can hear it and would like to be able to achieve it one day.

I can hear the third and the last one as some ambient background soundtracks in sci fi.

For the last one, I can see a huge white room inside of a spaceship, full of lens flares and a few floating objects, and on the one side of a wall is a giant window to the dark nothingess illuminated with faint stars. If you added more harmony and more noticable progression with strings it would be epic, though, you can probably already imagine, it would start to sound like Zimmers work, so there's that.

I think the third one would be even better with a lot of reverb, also as a faint background for something.

The first two are top kek material.

Oh and the fourth one is also similar, make it with a lot of reverb, far away.

I ackchully do have a project i'm sposta be working on. Back in high school i wrote a song that i played with my buds at various school concerts, won the talent show, etc. My friend recently stumbled upon the old demo i recorded so we've decided to re-record it for hyuks. it's going to be the beginning step in embarking on a whole new project. SO i have to do the drums, record the bass part, add some keys, and start recording my guitar parts. then he's going to overdub his parts.

once this is done i want to start working on a weird ambient/dirty rock fusion album. here's the old demo of that song anyway:

Well atm I'm tossing up between sound production or technical production in Adelaide. idk, I think going to do sound tho

it's very easy

learn how to play an instrument, get acquainted with a piano roll, learn how to use that synth you have, watch this : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atvtBE6t48M (you should be able to apply the general synthesis knowledge learned to most synths, hard or soft), learn how to mix and how to use your DAW , and that's basically it, good luck buddy

Fuck around with the DAW and read tutorials if you don't understand how to do something

So I'm wanting to get a really dirty, almost megaphone-like vocal-effect using a microphone and a guitar stompbox.

I know I'll get that old-time radio sound if I cut the bass and treble while boosting the mids, but I want the crackling, distorted sound too.

Any recommendations for a specific pedal?

copyright doesn't allow you to make copies or derivative works anon. when you buy music you aren't paying for access to the copyright. you need permission to make your own copies or derivative works. it's not even legal for you to publicly perform or play the music, which is why commercial establishments need to pay licensing fees if they're going to have a radio or jukebox or something. it's standard stuff anonymous.

>>
Can i just ask why everyone on these threads always seems to make ambient? Is it because its a simpler and less compelx style of music to produce?
>>
>>60808404
I know that feel man. I used to feel that way as someone who wanted to become successful so bad, but now after a lot of hard work, I can pretty much make whatever I envision and want and "success" is hopefully just around the corner. Anyway, word of advice is keep working at it day and night and also, try to envision it before you do it. You have to see it before you make it. You need something, a melody, a chord progression, even a sound. You can open up a blank canvas and randomly expect to make a masterpiece. Direction and purpose is key. I know it sounds generic, but it's what I got. I have another 20-30 minutes before I go to bed, I'll try to help you out as much as I can during that time, or shoot me a message on soundcloud /anthony-anadiotis
>>
>>60808676
Not the anon youre replying to but holy fuck me and him are basically one
I constantly envision plenty of melodies and basically songs in my head but putting the shit together is unbeliably frustrating. Ive been going at this for about a year now and i still have not made one fucking aong succesfully. Everything my idols make flows almost logically, its poetic yet simple. The second i try it, its a fucking abortion. I just get stuck doing the same shitty 8 bar loops and fail to accomplish shit.
>>
>>60808819
I'll try not to give generic motivational advice. After you envision the melody, try to think up a context of it. I have no idea what genre of music you make, but try to envision the chords, the drums, the bass, try to think it in your head first, as much as you can. Then, when you go to your DAW start of simple. Program your drums, then bass, then your lead line. From then on, once you have your basic structure layered work on making a full sound by doubling your lead, drum fills, adding chord stacks, more instruments, making variations. If you told me what genre you make I could maybe help out a bit more but try not to be overwhelmed and start with the basics first.
>>
>>60808404
I think you have a very unhealthy mindset, but you maybe can turn that into motivation to work harder at what your doing. I don't think you should quit, unless you really don't like producing or making music

Alright so im more of a bass person, so my goal is to produce genres such as drum and bass, garage, some dubstep, etc.
So like im trying to create a dnb remix of a song called "Be together" by major lazer as of late (not sure if youre familiar with the song)
So i create the drums, i have the vocals, i even have a part of the bass wobbles worked out, but when it comes to makong a proper melody to fit the mix and on top of all that make all the elements work together nicely, i consider suicide. Its like a curse, i have no inclinaton to stop trying to produce, but honestly im a year in and im still a fucking musical try hard failure.

I don't know man, I have a notepad with like 800 melodies written down. When I take a shower, go for a walk, take a shit, travel to different places, eat some nice food, I get inspired and lots of melodies come to me, so then I just up and go to my computer or pull out my phone and write that shit down. If you struggle to make a melody WHILST working you won't come up with anything. Usually it's just me working on material that I've written down over the course of time. You should really get to writing down shit on a notepad or recording yourself because you can't tell me you NEVER have inspiration. I made this catchy dnb melody the other day that I'll put on my upcoming EP too.

When you say you write your melodies down on a notepad, do you mean you write the notes down or do you go full out patrician and do bars of sheet music?
>>
>>60809523
sheet music not so much, tho I use Sibelius for arranging, I mean just write the note names and the context, or I might just do ---- ---- ---- ---- which is 16th notes 4/4 and replace a - with a note. Sometimes it's just a mashup of stuff I like, sometimes it's a mood, a sample, it's anything really, but EVERYTHING that inspires me i immediately write it down, the issue is I have so much fucking shit written down that I don't know where to start, I 'm making a 7 track EP which hopefully is gonna be on a major label and I 'll be using up a bunch of those ideas.

Here's the thing. It's not a gift, it took me a while before I started hearing all that stuff inside my head. Inspiration will come to you, but not immediately, keep working at it and keep listening to a lot of music, and stuff outside your "comfort zone". I released some stuff on Plasmapool but I want to release my EP with Monstercat, they give out a lot of exposure. my SC is /anthony-anadiotis, tho I only upload production trash on there and I'll delete that SC when I start off with my alias, anyways, feel free to send me a message there anytime man, I can also show you that dnb thing I've been working on if u want.

if youre aiming for hardstyle the lead isnt dirty enough. it needs more detune & unison voices.
for the kick you can always keep in mind that you can either go for a punchy distorted kick or clean kick + reverse bass. choose your favorite.

not a /prod/ guy, pretty dumb when it comes to DAWs, but I want to start messing around with tape loops and stuff.

I really love ambient / drone music so I was going to get a tascam 4track and start making my own tape loops and ambient recordings

I feel like it would be a good stepping stone and really fun.

Until I can afford one I've been learning ableton live though so when the time comes i can start making my own ambient pads to put on my cassettes

what level are you able to use the program at currently?

you sound kinda like me, and i truly believe you really just need to figure it out on your own. it comes with time, and that's a good thing. i've used it for 2 years and i remember how daunting all the features can be. personally, i was able to make really basic tracks after a few weeks, and as i kept making tracks, i would want to do a certain thing and then a previously mysterious feature would suddenly make sense. "oh that must be what that does". desu i would read advice like this when i first started out and find it discouraging but believe everything you do, in your own way, will be worth it. i did watch a bunch of tutorials to get the basic layout of ableton and i believe that was necessary but you really just have to figure it out on your own.

I want to buy a usb mixer as opposed to a separate mixer and audio interface or a mixer into pc sound card. I am going to be recording guitar and mic. I want to do the majority of the work on pc, and will not be using the mixer for any live situations. Is it okay for me to cheap out? Is there a better deal than pic related out there? hey this is still going!
thank you for the piano vst recs but i figured out that i actually like upright pianos more. Here's where the problem arised.

>backstory

i installed ableton32 because i wanted to use Synth1 and SQ8L. They work and have cool sounds.
also Sylenth32 works.
unfortunately 64 vsts don't work anymore.

>i used 64 before and after the rec of a popular youtube channel (sandwichproduction) with tutorials i decided to try ableton 32. (the stoner dude said it would be better to use 32 as long as you can).

Problem with 64 amd 32 anleton
i run it on a toaster netbook and my controller can handle 2 notes without crackling sound.
when i play 3 or more notes it is fucked.
(i tried 128-1024 buffer, not much changed)
i reach 55-70% cpu though.

also it is worse on Upright1 piano VST. Iguess less voices on the VST = less heavy on the cpu?

>tl;dr sory for the autism and bizarre english.
>>
>>60817209
You could also go to Walmart or something a buy a $20 tape deck and some blank (or thrifted) cassettes and make/record tape loops today.
>>
>>60825535
questions are

>what do you think about the crackling when i play more than 2-3 notes of the controller?

>can i get by with the 32 ableton version? i don't really need the latest and flashiest VSTs for my needs if there are enough good 32VSTs out there.
>>
>>60825535
specs of your netbook? also are you using an interface or asio4all?
>>
>>60825630
Most good vsts are only 32bit and very few good vsts are only 64bit. 64bit isnt really worth using unless your pc has more than 4 gigabytes of RAM.

If you are getting crackling sounds, I recommend you try Asio4ALL. While it solves the problem with flying colors, it creates the problem of only listening to one audio source at a time i.e. only listening to your DAW, and having to close your daw if you want to listen to something on your web browser.

If you dont want that hassle then I recommend you get an audio interface like a scarlett2i4 where their official asio drivers let you listen to all apps on your pc while at the same time having low latency/cpu consumption.

Recommend you try asio4all first though.

>>
>>60825772
i do use asio4all and connect my controller via usb.

if the crackling sounds are not recorded on the arranger maybe i can make it.
they are distracting but you can play the keys.

It's weird to think back a few years when I moved from Garageband to Live 8. It was daunting AF, but now everything is so second nature that it feels like I've always used it.

>>
>>60827714
better question: why would you have any use for mme/directx mode?

>>60827797
I'm using a separate equalizer program to make the back speakers more similar to the front speakers but ASIO bypasses it.

>>60829288
You don't need to filter a sine wave since it's just a single frequency, the ones used in the album seem to be around 10k-12kHz. You should be able to create them with any additive synth.

I didn't listen to the full album so maybe we are talking about different sounds here.

Imo sampling the sounds of a record is okay but sampling whole basslines / beats without editing them is pretty much stealing

this literally happens to every single beginner musician that has a hard time applying themselves but I'll tell you how i made it out

1. learn music theory

2. learn more music theory

3. apply this music theory that you learned and practice it so that you can understand it

4. repeat steps one through three until you learn how to speak music

that's literally all there is to it. no shortcuts, no handmedowns, only dedication, patience and practice. I advice you learn to appreciate this learning process otherwise you'll get bored quick.

Posted a couple threads ago, but still trying to decide.

I've been using FL Studio for five or six years (maybe more I forget) for electronic music, and REAPER for anything more guitar oriented.

I had a brain hemorrhage in August and am just getting back into making music and producing, but I've completely forgotten how to use both DAWs.

Debating picking up Ableton (to use for both) instead of relearning FL and REAPER.

Thoughts?

If anyone can tell me the main strengths of FL and Ableton that'd be cool, my brain is really scattered nowadays. If there's any obvious questions about how I use the software that'd make one a better choice over the other feel free to ask, anything else.
>>
>>60842434
Dude, will you be ok? That's messed up. It's hard for me to think of anything to tell you that than to wish you a safe recovery... hope you remember all your DAW knowledge soon!

To answer your question... I think Ableton would be ideal since it adapts itself pretty well to both applications. there's also a lot of good resources for learning it on the internet.

>Dude, will you be ok? That's messed up. It's hard for me to think of anything to tell you that than to wish you a safe recovery... hope you remember all your DAW knowledge soon!
Thanks man. I'm getting better slowly. I've got walking and talking down again (only took about a month), but I'm only just getting back into music.

It was pretty shit, I don't remember a lot honestly, but I was getting better, then I had a second hemorrhage a few weeks after the first and went back to being unable to talk.

>To answer your question... I think Ableton would be ideal since it adapts itself pretty well to both applications. there's also a lot of good resources for learning it on the internet.
Yeah, that's a lot of the appeal to it. I've heard FL's piano roll is better (than Ableton's) now, and I do like using the 16-step sequencing stuff from time to time. On the flip Ableton (to me) looks way cleaner in the way it handles effects, parameters, automation, etc. Also looks like I would only need to learn the one program since I should be able to do any of the other production work I do (did) in it as well.

I still can't really play guitar (left hand control issues), so I bought a Nektar LX49 a couple weeks ago, which has turned out to be a way better purchase than I expected it to be.

It's pretty frustrating being a total amateur again, but it does feel nice to make music again, even if it's nothing special. I made this just after I got the LX49 home. Nothing special, but still.

I remember years ago I ended up going with FL because the approach of layering up sequences and patterns felt more natural to me, but I've heard Ableton can pretty much do this anyway with the piano roll.

I've also heard Ableton's live side is way better than FL's. Obviously that's not relevant now, but eventually I want to get back to it...

I just don't want to make the wrong choice, since learning either of them again is going to be tough and take awhile.

No need to make up an excuse like that if you're new.

Not new, although I have a lot more experience in recording metal. Electronic music was more of a pastime for me before.

The brain hemorrhage and forgetting how to use FL and REAPER is true though. I've managed to pick up REAPER pretty easily again though which is nice. I did both of these a couple weeks ago. Been putting a ton of time into playing guitar, takes a huge amount of focus now though.

The rest is pretty much just ignorance though. I don't think I ever thought too hard about what DAW I'd use for electronic music, but I definitely want to get more into it now.

Sound great, although the percussion other than the kick is pretty stock and sounds slightly unfitting

Thanks, I totally agree though. I pretty much gutted most of my VSTs and Samples so I wouldn't overwhelm myself. It's pretty hard to focus as it is.

I think the issue is the kicks are very electronic, whilst the rest is very electronic.

>Are you in middleschool?
No.

What does it matter what I listen to though? It's not like I'm sitting at home listening to metal all day and shit posting any other kind of music.

My personal AOTY is a long way from metal.

Honestly, I can't stand Ableton's piano roll and the chain device view. I like my stuff in separate windows which I can move around to my liking.
So I'd say FL, but I'm biased.
Recording live stuff is a hot mess though, and delay compensation still sometimes bugs out.

Yeah I do like FLs piano roll.

I think the big thing with Ableton for me would be being able to do metal production in it as well. Previously I would hop over to REAPER (Cubase way back when) instead.

I think the windows approach in FL would work better if it didn't have issues with my 24+19" monitor setup. It doesn't seem to like it at all.

How is multiple monitor support in each? I'm about to swap monitors. Grabbing two or three new monitors. Was thinking of getting a pair of 27-29" 4K monitors so I can have ungodly amounts of real estate.
>>
>>60846986
You can only have one window in FL, but there's a "maximize to all monitors" command that makes it full-screen on both. Or you can detach windows and move them outside the main area, to have playlist on a second display or something.
>24+19"
Well, that might look weird. If they're the same res, no problem besides from things not lining up, otherwise can't tell. I've got 2x19 side by side.

Can't say what Live looks like now in that department, apparently it does multimonitor now, but didn't when I last used it.

All my shit is somewhere in C:/Program Files(x86)/Image-Line/FL Studio 11/Data but I don't want to navigate in and out of that for every little thing if I use something other than FL11
Is FL a pain in the ass about changing folders for projects, presets, samples, VSTs, IRs, etc. etc? Does it keep sending you back to the "data folder" by default in every file dialogue?

I thought you were supposed to form an equilateral triangle with your head and the speakers?
Those are pretty far apart and not even directed at the head.
Am I doing it wrong?

yeah i once got told 5 handy words for learning drums but it applies to all music, "there are no shortcuts", literally there is nothing you can do but suck and suck and suck at it at the beginning, and sometimes it won't be fun, but there really is nothing you can do but keep trying, i know this advice is generic as hell, and you've probably heard it a lot but that's because there's no way round it.

(also, in terms of 'knowing where to start' it kinda depends on what genre you're making. if i'm making dance music or hip hop or something i'll start with the drums and layer on from there, if it's guitar music i'll start with a chord sequence. whatever works for you, but try to make sure you enjoy what you're starting with as much as possible, so that you can get into the groove/flow of what you're doing as quickly as possible. this will help you push through the sucky bits)

Move shit to where you want it and use symlinks to keep FL's browser happy.

24+19 is more what I had. 1920x1080 and a 1280x1024. I'll be changing to 4Ks soon I think...

>>60847468

I'm sitting a lot further back than you probably think I am. The bigger speakers are mainly for listening to the mix which I do standing further back (it's a fairly high powered system).

When mixing I use the top speakers which aren't connected in that photo (I just moved). I move them around depending on what I'm doing. I've got 6db loss at 3kHz in my left ear from a work accident however long ago, so I shift them around quite a bit.

Oh, also worth mentioning I'm usually working in quadraphonic. Once the speaker stands arrive I'm setting the third set of speakers (not shown) up behind me again. Gives a nice spread and openness to the sound.

Are there any fucking VST out there that actually utilize Aftertouch?

Not even DAWs signature synths like Live's Operator support it. What the fuck?
