That was always my problem with Kurt Cobain live, but it wasn't because he tried to no avail to replicate the records on stage. He seemed to actively try to make Nirvana's music as rough and harsh as possible on stage. That's the reason why Nevermind songs didn't sound right during concerts, not because they were too polished to recreate live. If Kurt Cobain wasn't such a contrarian and a try-hard about so many things, they probably could have played songs like Come As You Are just fine.
