I have noticed that some recent electronic artists don't seem to like associating with IDM. Even if 15 years their music would have had that label. Is it because they want to appear more culturally rooted?

yea i think the term is pretty stupid and pretty much racist. but as someone who hasn't been listening to electronic music for years and years, "IDM" seems like the music that interests me most at this point. I do like some Detroit/minimal techno, footwork, DNB, and Jungle (as well as some more pop-ish edm) but they generally don't seem as focused on designing different sounds. At this point I'm not so interested in how different genres used this beat or this bpm or these samples or all that.

IDM is a pretentious, shit tier term that even older electronic artists hate. Literally none of the original artists associated with the term were like "yeah, we make IDM".
It's also useless as a genre classifier because it says nothing about actual musical elements or influences, and can apparently apply to everything from techno to breakbeat to ambient.
