To me this album is so good that ranking the tracks is pretty pointless. I mean I agree that Back & Forth is probably the best track but after that trying to differentiate between the quality of the other tracks is way too hard.
One of the GOAT, Emergency & I.
Why does no one on /mu/ ever talk about Change? Emergency & I is still my favorite Plan album but Change is a classic. It's so much more mature and lyrically dense than the prior albums, and The Face of the Earth alone is one of their best songs.

Yea Change is really good. The mood of complete despondency is a perfect counter foil for Emergency & I's energy when you're not in the mood for the ball busting stuff.
Plus Ellen & Ben is just fucking brilliant. Almost Back & Forth tier.
What does /mu/ think of The Dismemberment Plan Is Terrified?
I think songs like This is the Life, The Ice of Boston, and Manipulate Me are just as good as anything on E&I.

A great album, I just don't think the songs are as varied as the later albums, and it's less technically impressive. The first half in particular is a highlight of the band's career, with Tonight We Mean It, The Ice of Boston, Academy Award, and Bra being some of their best songs in my opinion. It's been a tradition of mine for the past two years to give this album a listen every New Years Eve, and I can't wait to continue that.

My issue is all of the songs really sound the same, and I don't use that complaint a lot.

totally valid complaint, but I think the sameness is almost partially intended. It's a really nice "smooth" album as opposed to the pastiches of their other albums.
Totally get what you're saying though, it's a zone-out type of album, but the upbeat numbers just show you how close the Plan were from breaking into the mainsteam.
Then again, maybe it was best that they didn't.
