This. Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt is fantastic but I think it gets a little too much extra credit for simply being associated with final days. Reznor didn't exactly set the bar very high with that song anyway. NIN's version is terrible. Cash did the right thing and changed it to fit his own style, but just about anybody could take the source material and make a more listenable version of it.
Hallelujah, on the other hand, is incredible. Buckley saw what was already a great song and practically mugged Leonard Cohen of what was already one of his own most beloved songs.
