1. Please learn to respect opinions of others. people enjoy different things and that is alright. variety of opinions on a subject such as music is not a negative thing and it encourages discussion.

Also, the very fact something such as humanity even exists is absolutely astounding - the fact the law of physics created something within the universe that can experience things such as beauty, and understand anything at all - is just amazing. please think bigger, and you'll learn to appreciate and love humanity.

2. I like The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway more

Phil Collins is one of the biggest cunts in music, and the early work which belies this fact therefore seems dishonest.

Jesus christ. I've heard some dumb shit spouted on this board but I think you win award for that moronic bullshit.

The guy is an amazing drummer (see Brand X) and personally I think he is a better singer than Peter Gabriel. Maybe not a better showman but a better singer.

And Trick of the Tail is probably my favorite Genesis album. Seconds Out close second.

And Genesis really changed when Hackett left.
>>
>>60719935
Ah I see you're confused. Banks is probably the cunt of Genesis.

But fuck if I could play keys that fucking amazingly I'd be an arrogant cunt too.
>>
what do you think of a trick of the tail
>>
What happens is that ITCOTCK is a more accessible album, people who don't really care about progressive rock can listen to it easily, the structures that genesis uses are "weirder" than Moonchild (which is the only "obstacle" the album has).

junky rehash of old ideas
>>
>>60720866
No. It is a brilliant continuation by a band that lost their creative and live focus. They auditioned many singers and Phil Collins finally said "Fuck this. I can do this better." And he stepped out from behind the drum stool and became the band's new singer. Not an easy thing to do and I give him major props for pulling it off.

Hardly a "rehash of old ideas."

What if I suck King Crimson's dick and Genesis' dick?
top 10 prog albums:
1. King Crimson - Larks' Tongue In Aspic
2. Yes - Close to the Edge
3. Can - Tago Mago
4. King Crimson - Discipline
5. Mr Bungle - Disco Volante
6. Genesis - Selling England By The Pound
7. Frank Zappa - Uncle Meat
8. Magma - Udu Wudu
9. Gentle Giant - Octopus
10. The Mars Volta - Deloused In The Comatorium

I put two King Crimson albums because they were basically from two different bands really and they sound nothing alike. Also, I'm pretty sure Disco Volante counts as a prog album.

invisible touch and we cant dance are pretty good albums
they dont hold up to the rest of their discog by far but theyre objectively really solid albums, by pop and by art rock standards
phil collins is one of the most talented drummers ever. he did a lot of stuff in the 70s that you probably don't even realize is him. three of eno's best albums had collins drumming. brand x's first three albums are GOAT. his contributions to two sides of peter banks, peter and the wolf, pg's solo albums, and fripp's stuff are fucking revolutionary. he literally invented a drum sound that still gets emulated to this day, all from dicking around on a pg solo album. he's not even an asshole, just kind of awkward and his success outgrew his personality. his first couple of solo albums are pretty good, too. i fucking can't stand the "muh phil collins american psycho shitty pop artist" mentality

>>
>>60724291
explain to me how Zappa wasnt avant prog instead of just meme texting what I said and adding a retarded comment please?
>>
>>60724328
Prog doesn't mean "weird music." It's a style. Yes, Rush, Genesis, Crimson, Camel, Gentle Giant... are prog. Zappa/Mothers didn't sound anything like that. Zappa was into 19th and 20th century classical, jazz, and old R&B. Yeah, it's weird. Yeah, it's kinda complicated. Yeah, some of the guys in the band could really play. But it's not prog.
>>
>>60724548
Prog isnt just lengthy, whimsical English rock music. Avant prog is a legitimate subgenre and none of the band sound anything like the traditional Prog bands of England. Their detachment from the typical English sound doesnt prevent them from being Prog though.

----GENESIS----
Top Tier (10/10)-
Selling England, Lamb Lies Down, Foxtrot
Second tier (8-9/10)-
Nursery Cryme, Trespass, Abacab
Third Tier (6-7/10)-
Trick of the Tail, Wind and Wuthering, Duke, S/T
Fourth Tier-
all the early/mid live albums, Genesis to revelation
Fifth Tier-
Invisible/Dance

Genesis is just better in the studio.
Calling all stations is garbage
Some of their solo stuff had its moments, but meh.
Nursery Cryme is underrated. Fountain of Samalcis makes me hard.

Crimson is about as good as them, but I rank Crim a bit higher because they kept reinventing rather than having a big old downward curve.
Giant, Tull, and Yes are all great in their day but curved even harder down by the mid 70s.
Y'all need to check out PFM.

I've listened to a shit-ton of prog rock, and I have to say I like it when it leans towards jazz. These albums struck gold for me.

Hiro Yanagida- Milk Time (1970)
Pekka Pohjola- Pihkasilmä Kaarnakorva (1972)
Yonin Bayashi- 触即発 (1974)
Arti & Mestieri- Tilt - Immagini Per Un Orecchio (1974)
Heldon- "Allez-Teia" (1975)
Focus- Ship of Memories (1976)
Happy The Man- s/t (1977)
Dixie Dregs- What If (1978)
National Health- Of Queues and Cures (1978)

I've learned to stay away from 80s prog. For whatever reason, the music seems to have a devastating lack of energy compared to the 70s. The only decent 80s prog album that comes to mind is Low Flying Aircraft's s/t album (1987), and that's probably because guys like Bill Bruford were in it. Of course I'd love to be proven wrong if anyone knows any 80s prog or jazz-rock groups that are fantastic.
