So, time for some statistics. When NBBMN started, I made the strawpoll asking people their favorite Black Metal year (1991-) and I've now made a nice bar chart out of the final results. Each bar represents the amount of people who thought that specific year has been the best year in Black Metal history so far. What do you guys think?

>>
>>60717250
It really baffles me how 2009 didn't manage to get any votes. I mean, there were multiple really good high profile albums released during that year, for example:
>Nokturnal Mortum - Гoлoc cтaлi
>Blut aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta II: Dialogue With the Stars
>The Ruins of Beverast - Foulest Semen of a Sheltered Elite
>Arckanum - ÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞ
>Anaal Nathrakh - In the Constellation of the Black Widow
>Oranssi Pazuzu - Muukalainen puhuu
>Beherit - Engram
In addition to those, Gorgoroth, Evil, Archgoat, Skitliv and Aryan Art among others released good albums in 2009, so it definitely doesn't look so shitty to me. I could very well imagine 2009 being someone's favorite Black Metal year, but apparently it isn't, at least not in /nbbmn/.
>>

Yeah I missed the survey but I would have voted 2009 for these bands plus:
>Peste Noire - Ballade Cuntre lo Anemi Francor
>Miserere Luminis - Miserere Luminis
>Austere - To Lay Like Old Ashes
>Angmar - Zuruck In Die Unterwelt
Definitely a great year.

On the first of this month I'd listened to maybe a dozen black metal albums, on that day I saw the first thread and thought it would be a good time to finally get into the genre. I have to say, it was a great decision, there's been tons of good stuff in these threads. I'll really miss this and look forward to going full out BM next year (only did the last week or so this time).

I'll lurk for the American evening, but farewell for now. It's been fun.

It's tough to say since I feel as if they are no longer a band, but a collective now. Vindsval's teasing post about a DsO split however is a slim trail of hope I find me, and many others can't help but to cling to though.

If however they are truly done, then it's likely the closest we will ever get to new DsO would likely be Abigor, as given the collective nature of the group, TT is very likely to have played a role.

It's shit so who cares how "experimental" it is, that's the point.
And it's not very much. I heard half a track, it sounded like an even lamer version of very thinned down Gaë Bolg And The Church Of Fand with very digital production.
Wooh such experimentation, not like those boring bands that just put riffs next to each other.
>>
>>60722353
It's not really even math rock, 99% of the songs are all in 4/4 and the only thing "math rock" about it is Kel Vahaal. Even then that just uses polyrhythms and not time signatures.

Besides that, experimentation isn't even important in black metal, black metal is about tradition. Or I should say, this warped idea you have of "experimentation" doesn't have any place in black metal and has no value whatsoever outside of it either.
The great black metal bands have their own identity, and they don't real on gimmicks to create it. Calling it darkthrone worship just reveals how little you understand both about those bands and about darkthrone themselves.
Bands like Armagedda, Clandestine Blaze, Taake, Beherit, Malign and so many others reign supreme and leave it to the tryhard indiekids to jerk off to fotm soulless wank that is marketed at pitchfork readers.

And what concepts are bands like liturgy creating?
No one will be listening to this trash in 5 years while true (not trve, of course the difference will be lost on a simpleton like you) black metal fans will be happily listening to the new clandestine blaze record, which by the way sounds as different to venom as rock does to blues but that is beyond your comprehension apparently.

In anon's defense, your idea of classic cannot be earlier than 1990. You are as equally vapid as any Liturgy-loving fanatic. Touting this year's anticipated releases or hyped releases is not being a fan, it's being a poseur that can use google.
>>
>>60722829
>what concepts are bands like liturgy creating
Fusing electronic music/noise rock/math rock/prog rock with black metal.
>no one will be listening to this trash in 5 years
I recall hearing the same thing being said about Renihilation, which was released in 2009. 6 years. People are still listening to it.
>black metal fans will be happily listening to stuff that has virtually no difference from the music i despise other than that it's approved by the kvlt circlejerk
Sure thing friendo
>what is experimental and why should i give a shit
Taken from RYM.
>Experimental music describes the most radical approaches that can be found throughout the history of recorded music. Experimental music has two main characteristics: the first is about the production and the other one is about the sound.
I just defined it for you, there you go you damn pvrist.
>i gave you bands that did something different and unique and amazing
So they experimented?
>fuck experimentation
Sure thing friendo, experimentation sucks because there are bands you dislike that experiment.
>>60722951
I would stop fighting but I can't figure out how to filter tripfags.
>>
>>60722829
its hard to take this seriously since you unironically use v's instead of u's sometimes and blindly insult people.

I agree that what guys like liturgy do is not experimental. There is literal musical experimentalism, carried out by people like Alvin Lucier. However, in the colloquial use of the word, the bands you listed did experiment, combining genres and ideas that were not previously explored in this context
>>
>>60722990

The only thing experimental in terms of production on The Ark Work is how terrible it sounds and how little effort was put into it.
>>
>>60722829
The Ark Work isn't good because of black metal or experimentation. It's good because the songs are well arranged and composed. I agree it's like blackened vaporwave but that doesn't make it bad. And it's way too soon to tell its influence. It's no Deathcrush but it is certainly unique, engaging and inspiring.

I agree with this tbhonest. The cheapness of the production sounds very intentional at parts (Fanfare, anyone?), and the composition on here is very unique and exhilarating. It almost feels a bit like a sequel to Aesthetica when Follow begins, and Aesthetica was my AOTY 2011

Precisely, it sounds like utter shit. There's a difference between deliberately using raw production, and deliberately using... fuck, whatever that is.

Production matters.
>>
>>60723205
That's because rocket science is objective. Your opinions are the reverse, silly.
So using shitty production under the label of "raw" is fine, but using it to satirize modern digital production techniques isn't? Sure thing famo.

>>
>>60723398
It makes me sad to see that someone who dickrides DSO can't appreciate Liturgy.
You want Liturgy doing really good production? Aesthetica and Renihilation have some of the most beautiful production in black metal, full stop. It's incredibly clean and it captures every detail from the band's playing without being overdone.
>>
>>60723128
Goddamn I want to lock my self inside and listen to the trilogy again.
>>

Except Aesthetica sounds like nothing. I can't hear a damn thing in those songs, it's just empty notes.

As for Renhilation, it has been many years since I've bothered with that record, though I do recall it being listenable.

Yea, I recall Renhilation being similar to Krallice. As for Krallice, I'm not super up to date on them, I've liked what I've heard but I understand they have changed their sound a bit between releases.

As for my comment, I feel nothing from that record. It's just notes with nothing behind it. No emotions or feelings, or atmospheres. Just notes.

>>60723594
Their sound hasn't really changed much perse, the only real major change they've made is with their latest release, which incorporates a strong tech death influence. Aside from that compositionally they've been very consistent.
Aesthetica has a very triumphant mood to it, especially on tracks like High Gold. The mathy parts that appear all around the album feel a bit like a rollercoaster with how fast they're going, they shoot up and down and bring you along for a ride. Maybe it's just not your thing.
>>

this is still good to my ears
>>
Speaking of Krallice, what do you guys think of them?

Years Past Matter is phenomenal.

Also, people were disappointed by their most recent release but you're aware they have a bunch of stuff coming out? Another album already next year and splits in the works. Exciting.
>>
>>60723980

The s/t and Years Past Matter are the only albums I could get into.
>>
>>60723980
Krallice is one of the very few bands I think can do absolutely 0 wrong. Even their latest release was still fucking fantastic even though it's their weakest yet.
Years Past Matter and s/t are my favorites, followed by Diotima, then Dimensional Bleedthrough, and finally Ygg huur.
So fucking hyped for new shit, I cannot get enough of these guys.
>>
>>60723594
Renihilation is definitely the best, but being unable to look past the production to see the interesting and rewarding songwriting on The Ark Work is just a sad story.
>>
>>60724051
I hope their upcoming albums are bit more black metal though. I think they can do wrong though, some of their albums are just too long and I get bored. That being said YPM, s/t and Diotima are great. Wish the vocals were a bit different but that's just preference. Check out yellow eyes if you dig em.
