What albums are ESSENTIAL for a David Bowie collection? I feel like you can get a good retrospective for an artist in about 10 or 9 albums at most. After that it's all filler.
>>
>Hunky Dory
>The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars
>Aladdin Sane
>Station to Station
>Low
>"Heroes"
>Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)
Buy The Idiot and Lust for Life while you're at it

Okay OP let's do this, all you need for a GOAT bowie collection without going over 10 purchases.

/mu/ would have been a shit show of it was around for Let's Dance when it came out.

1. Oustide is the only great album after Scary Monsters. The albums after 1. Outside are alright but same-y.

I hope you have Lodger, The Man Who Sold the World, and Space Oddity hiding in there somewhere.

Albums and why they might not be essential
Space Oddity- unless you dislike psychedelic folk, but even then it's one of the best made.
The Man Who Sold the World, Hunky Dory- Bowie's most solid transition albums. Varried and amazing. Many name Hunky Dory as better, so if you only want one, choose that.
Ziggy- widely accepted as a masterpiece. Belongs in any essential list.
Aladdin Sane- a stranger Bowie glam album. If you liked Ziggy, you need to hear it, but even if you disliked Ziggy you'll probably like this better.
Diamond Dogs- I believe that you should only get this if you absolutely can't live without more of Bowie's glam period. It wasn't reviewed as well either. Then again, many people love it. I personally don't.
Young Americans- this album is too cheesy for me. You might like it if you like soul. Listen to the title track. If you don't get this, get the extended version of Station to Station for the track Fame.
Station to Station- another widely accepted masterpiece.
Low, Heroes- the first and second of the Berlin trilogy, Bowie's collaboration with Eno. Also definitively essential.
Lodger- my personal favourite of the Berlin trilogy. All these albums are different, but it's understandable if you only want two from this period.
Scary Monsters- Bowie's last album before slipping into the pop haze of the 80s. Essential to hear what a good 80s Bowie would have sounded like.
Let's Dance- the album that made Bowie feel like he needed to make pop albums until years later. It's essential if you like dance music. Some love it, but I can't forgive this album.

Possibly essential later greats- Ouside, Earthling, Heathen.
