few months ago it was GMGN (making a mini resurgence) and now TMR is back aggravating the normies
All memes aside, this is a good album. I find it enjoyable to listen to, and it has a lot of really solid, good songs. But people hate it because they think everyone claiming to like it must be a tryhard, wannabe hipster type trying to be cool because they "get it" when in reality it's just a meme. And some people figure since it's a meme, it can't possibly be good. I like it; I don't think that makes me better than people who don't like it, or that my taste in music is more patrician or whatever, I don't care about that, I just like it.

Well, some of the hate comes from that, for sure, but come on, you can't just say NONE of the hate comes from it being a meme. There are people on /mu/ who will hate almost anything that's a meme, like as if no one could possibly be listening to it because it's actually good, it must just be because it's a meme and they've been fooled into thinking it's good.

Memes fucking suck but that album wasn't made to be a meme. It was made to be whatever the fuck Beefheart was wanting it to be. I like the album. I think the lyrics are pretty good (except for a few songs), I think the compositions are spontaneous and oddly satisfying.
Vaporwave and a lot of other present day music inspired by this album is usually meme status.

The only reason this album is a meme is because it's "funny" to show TMR to people who aren't already interested in free jazz, unmetered music. It's difficult music if you're interested in catchy melodies and familiar time signatures but otherwise saying this record "tries too hard" isn't valid criticism.

a bunch of racket with juvenile free associated lyrics. It's not even like an aurally assaulting racket, which I would be ok with, it's like really benign racket. It's a boring album. You could spend, i dunno, an indefinite amount of time explaining the background and concept behind it and i swear i wouldn't think it was any better.

You should go find as much fucking rock as you can from 1967, 1968, and 1969, listen to it all, listen to Trout Mask Replica, and then listen to the other stuff again. If your first thought isn't "WHERE THE FUCK DID THAT EVEN COME FROM??? HOW???" then you fucking don't think.
You assholes really just want to be right about this album. So do I, but here's the fucking difference. If I'm right, and this album actually is pretty damn great, then that means all the established critics and musicians who've been praising for years are pretty much right too. people who don't like this album probaly haven't listened past frownland and the poem that comes after it desu. Incredibly catchy melodies and blues riffs come in throughout most of the album. I would actually argue that if you have listened to any minimal amount of blues and rock then you should thoroughly enjoy this album.
