Hey /mu/. I couldn't find production general so I'm just gonna post.
To cop or not to cop? I own no hardware for production but I'm a musically inclined person and have had a lot of fun fooling around with FL Studio, is this a good opportunity to move to ableton and pick up my first midi controller?

I personally would suggest not to. I got something very similar to this before (also made by Akai) where it was 25 keys, and the keys were stiff and very hard to play.

Are there any alternatives? I don't even use a controller because learning to play piano or drum pads would only be a means to an end and a piano offers less flexibility than being able to quickly program whatever notes you want anyway.
Are there any alternatives for someone who produces this way? Is there anyone else on this board that does this?

if you're going to get a keyboard, get full sized keys and get more than 25. exceptions: you are looking to supplement modular gear (cause some great CV capable devices are only 25 keys) or if you are a travelling producer. DNC the OP pic. get a dedicated session controller (even the APC mini, ffs). the MPK type keys suck.

Everyone call them either wall warts or power bricks here. But power bricks are usually the in-line type.
>>
>>60635797
It offers more flexibility because I don't have to worry about the constraints of my hands. I can program anything in regardless of whether or not I can play it, and I can easily hand pick each note of a chord or arpeggio linearly and program the velocity to be exactly how I want it to be. It's much faster this way and doesn't require using a controller as a middleman.

I hate Apple as in I hate buying their overpriced shitty hardware when Windows does absolutely everything I need it to do outside of the proprietary software. I could buy Windows laptop for half the price and get the exact same performance.

To be honest I've always felt like there was a stigma towards FL Studio that it was in some way worse or less legitimate than other DAW's, but now that you mention it, it actually seems pretty much perfect for MIDI sequencing and songwriting for users who don't use controllers. I'll definitely be giving it a shot now that I've given it some consideration. The piano roll looks great. Thanks.

I'd go a 49 key. I bought a Nektar LX49 for my desk a few days ago and I can't imagine having any less. I usually use a weighted 88-key, but it's anything but convenient.

>move to ableton
Anything you specifically don't like about FL Studio? I always found it a pretty good DAW. I personally prefer it to Ableton.

>>60635554
FL Studio is my go-to for MIDI sequencing. For recording instruments I use REAPER.

>>60636111
>>60636721
>>60637611
Gotta ask, what is with the stigma towards FL? I've used it off and on for about six or seven years now and it's always been great?
>>
>>60638814
Probably the reputation it's made for itself as being the DAW every beginner trap beat producer uses, people seem to think they 'graduate' if they move from FL to another DAW (most of the time Ableton) , it's reputation isn't a big deal imo, especially since most people who are elitists about DAWs usually don't know what they're talking about.
>>
>>60638963
I'll admit, I spent a couple years trying Ableton on and off because of the Fruity Loops stigma, but for sequencing and MIDI I tend to end up back at FL. It doesn't feel as powerful--which could almost certainly be attributed to not having heaps of time in it, but it definitely fits my work flow better.

I might pick up Ableton again at some stage. It seems like it could be better for jamming at home, but I can't see it ever being my go-to.

I have way more time in REAPER, but who cares what you're using? If you're music is good it's good.

Nah nah man it's not a lesser DAW or anything. FL is pretty good if you're actually good, maybe know some music theory and don't make your shit all off beat. The name Fruity Loops that's associated with it, makes some look at it as childish. And dime a dozen no talent ass niggas always use FL, but that's a given due to it being a more popular DAW.
>>
>>60639277
Not him, but I like that it's fairly simple to use. I posted in a thread yesterday that I was using it to get back into writing music since my brain hemorrhage. I don't think my head could take Ableton at the moment.

>>
>>60639310

I had some experience with FL for a bit college, but I remember my hard drive failed. which made me give Ableton 9 a try. Haven't looked back at FL since SENPAI I don't think FL should be looked down on though it's still pretty legit.

I want to try Ableton again at some point. I like the flow of FL a lot, but Ableton seems like it could be better for jamming in my room for fun.

I can't really play guitar at the moment (left hand doesn't work properly still), so I bought a cheap MIDI controller the other day (Nektar LX49) so I could try to write music again.

Oh, thanks dude. It's my first bit of music in ages, so that means a lot.

>grabbed up the Nektar LX49, I don't have one of those but that shit seems pretty nice.
It's really great for how cheap it was. FL11 doesn't have full support, but 12 does. I'm upgrading tomorrow.

I have 88-key digital piano I usually use, but I love having all the controls and being able to leave it on my desk. Really glad I got the 49 over the 61 for that exact reason.

>Don't let that masturbation accident slow down your creative juices bruh.
I laughed. I got hit by a car and had two brain hemorrhages. Took four or five weeks to start talking again. Just getting back into writing music.

Been teaching myself to play guitar again, but I'm having a lot of trouble with my left hand still. Did these just under a week ago though. Was weird recording direct.

What the hell is wrong with Logic, I moved over from Cubase to logic when I bought a Mac years ago and Logic is a great DAW.
Just keep using Logic as you already obviously have a Mac and are familiar with Logic. Spend some time maybe learning how logic works a bit more in depth instead of spending more time learning a new DAW. Most DAWs do the same things anyway and Logic has some great stock plugins (alchemy) and the effects sound really good. The tape delay is still regarded as one of the best tape delays on the market.
Only thing I'm hoping is that they update some of the older instruments and effects at some point as they are old as fuck. Would be nice if they even just re skin them so they all look like they are from the same DAW, but I can live without that really.

>>60639697
Your clyp is alright actually, except for that choppy lead

and thanks for your compliment, unfortunately that's a pretty old project, I only found the WAV, but I'm pretty sure I used 808 kicks, made a sequence with the kicks, and copied the sequence of the kicks to the sub synth, which is basically just a sine with quick attack and 100 percent sustain on the amp envelope

I bought one two days ago, I really really like it. If you want to keep it on your desk permanently go for it. If you have the space get the 61 though.

I have an 88-key as well, so the 49 was purely to sit on my desk.

Also make sure you DAW has support for it. The drivers are a little weird, but work perfectly if it's supported.

I wish I could work out how to delete all the samples I don't use and synth presets though as I'm not really a big fan of using presets and samples and it kind of bugs me that I have so much of my computer filled with all that, plus when you turn it on you literally have thousands of sounds.

I like to work with a small, select amount of samples, that I usually make myself and I tend to keep my hard drive pretty tidy by cleaning out and trashing all my old samples. I'm not fond of having a huge go to sample library. I guess I'm a bit old school in the way I work as I usually sample something, do some sound design, write a few tracks with those samples and then trash the samples or just move the project folder and samples to another hard drive
>>
>>60646548
I'm not sure how it works really, but Maschine browser system sort of works by tagging all the sounds into categories like drums, analogue, digital, sampled etc, then snares, kicks, hats etc. some are synth based, some are samples, but I guess some might share source sounds/samples and then be tweaked in battery or kontakt? Fuck knows!?
Think I might copy everything to an external drive and just go in and start deleting everything, then go to the external drive and use the samples from there. Still a bit unclear as to whether any of the synths and samplers might fuck up though.

>>60646981
Yep, I agree. I own all the software installed on my computer. Logic, AudioMulch, Maschine 2, Quattro DSP, AudioFinder, and my select few plugins. It's a strange thing, but saving up and buying a bit of software for me is pretty exciting, something that never happened when I pirated software.
>>
>>60647172
i used to pirate but i ended up with so much shit it all lost value to me so i got rid of it all and started over but legit

imo you really get better when you have less things at your expense and they actually have value to you then too
>>
>>60635882
I live in NC too dude, I have NEVER heard that phrase in my fucking life.
>>
>>60647380
Yep that's exactly what I did. I bought a new computer and decided to only use software that I bought. I bought Komplete ultimate mostly for the effects plugins as they provide a really good base for studio effects, and I have a few Waves plugins, and a couple of other plugins from other company's too. It's funny as I don't miss any of the other plugins I used to have. It really works having less for me, the software starts to feel like a bit of hardware after a while, like an old familiar synth that you've used so much. You know every little detail.

Don't they limit activations? I remember I snagged some free plugin from eventide or some shit a while back and it said 3 activations max.
>>
>>60649245
that limit is actually the number of machines you have activated at once and you can deactivate and transfer between machines I believe
>>
>>60649343
Huh, thought it was some EA-tier bullshit and had to go through the hoops to request new activations. Doesn't sound that bad then.
>>
>>60649397
yea its the same way with waves plugins too with waves central
if you are gonna use a different machine with your waves plugins you have to transfer them to waves cloud before you do to redownload them and use them without problems

What is it you don't trust about them? I understand they are a bit of a hassle having another programme to install, but once it's up and running it's pretty hassle free. Do you think it's something more sinister or what?

>>
>>60649998
I'm paranoid about keeping my illegal underground zoophilia creation ring private, and installing software that has the possibility to potentially see what I do kind of puts a damper on that.

In other words, I'm a freefag. And also am pretty picky about what stuff I want to have installed on my pc. I know it's a moot point in this day age, but still, having some pretense of freedom is appreciated.
>>
>>60650138

One that's not taken seriously enough too. DAWs and plugins are getting way more mainstream than before, and popularity is a fucking magnet for gathering shit about users.
>inb4 /g/
>>
>>60650192
yea and making vst plugins is becoming more popular

all it would take is one butthurt dev to make the installer search for competitor plugins and delete them or whatever he wants
>>
>>60650138
Ah that's pretty shitty, although I can't imagine, any of the bigger company's doing that kinda thing as most of the ones mentioned and my original post was more about companies giving away a plugin that normally costs cash and has been on the market before. True verb has got to be over 10 years old now.

I know what your saying about your freedoms but personally I've given up on that idea, if anyone wants to spend their time looking through my shit then they are welcome, but in all seriousness is there even any suspicion about that with things like Waves installer, native instruments service centre and ilok?

>>
>>60650581

The way Service Center installs shit is:

They can have all of my what, because they won't get my money.

Weird question. I've got a piece of outboard gear that uses a pair of TigerSHARC DSP processors. Is it possible to utilize the DSP power outside of what that unit does? As in, get plugins in my DAW to be processed by that unit instead of the CPU.

That's a shame. I assume there's stuff out there that can use them being DSP processors. I run a lot of outboard compressed on them at the moment, but I do it a clunky way. Essentially reamp through it...

hello, looking to purchase FL studio after playing with the demo. Which edition should I purchase, assuming I have the money for it. Which is best value.
>>
>>60656933
FL Studio comes with loads of great synths that don't come with the producer edition, but if you're not interested in those , or you want to use freeware/pirated synths, the producer edition is basically all you need, the signature edition is basically the producer edition but with a few of the synths and effects that the producer edition didn't come with, I use a pirated copy, so maybe I'm not the best person to give advice, so look this over if you haven't already

It's not Powercore or that other standard, I don't really know of other vendors creating plugins running on a separate card. Also, what board is it? It would have to be controlled by your computer and have some shared memory bus, otherwise there would be no synchronous communication.

>>60646979
It's jarring but not in a good way - sounds like the second part starts playing before the first ends and for the moment everything sounds louder.
Bass not clear enough, but don't go overboard the other way, I like the washed-out quality of it all. Maybe add a little more punch to the drums with transient shapers.
Sounds like the start to a very pleasant track.

It's slow to use and not very user friendly, also feature-limited compared to other DAWs. I don't remember, can you pop it out from the bottom bar and utilize more screen, or are you forced to vertically scroll all the time.

Hello, sorry for my english.
I'm in need of some help:
I've been using Live Suite for a year and so far I preferred to master what is native before moving further. I decided to take advantage o the black friday and to buy my first 2 or 3 good plugin, with around 400/500 euro budget. Looking around a bit i opted for what I consider a safer investment with the discounts on the Native Instruments products.
The questions are:
-Since they're discounted, their Reverb, EQ and compressors ... are they worth?
-I Read many good things about those from UAD, but the site says they require dedicated hardware ... did I understand correctly?
-Kontakt, taking into account the budget, do i have to consider it a "must", considering the discount?
And finally, I want at least two synthesizers and I like them all: I've got a preference for Massive, Reaktor inspires me because modular fuck yes, and monark makes me hard as fuck. I know that it's up to try and there are demos, which I will download, but I'd appreciate your opinion a lot... what do?
>>
After using ableton pretty much since it came out I've finally picked up a legitimate copy. Feels good tbqh.
>>
>>60664275
Devs thinking they can package a metric ton of shit into their software just because users WILL install it because they don't care as long as their shiny new toy works should be fired, tortured, and then killed.
And then they probably also put in autostart with the system for "user's convenience" (as if anyone needs their stupid managers to run 24/7), then an update check and suddenly your PC takes ten times as long to start and you don't know what happened.
Fuck that.
Though in NI's case the decision probably comes from somewhere higher up.
Well, I don't want to waste CPU cycles on their stupid bullshit drivers for a device I don't even have.

FL does it fucking best. Registration is stored in system registry and that's fucking it. You can run it on as many PC as you own and it's not going to complain about "muh activation count exceeded, you can't use the software you've bought the licence for".
>>
>>60664435
I'm using Komplete 10. I would recommend buying th bundle as a whole.
>-Since they're discounted, their Reverb, EQ and compressors ... are they worth?
Reverbs are great, you get a lot of modules to use in Guitar Rig and Reaktor 5. EQs are quite good and worth the price, though I usually use voxengo EQ on voices. The compressor is good, but it cannot be tweaked as much as other compressors. So, yeah all in all they are worth the price.

>-I Read many good things about those from UAD, but the site says they require dedicated hardware ... did I understand correctly?
Don't know, I'm not using anything from UAD.

>Kontakt, taking into account the budget, do i have to consider it a "must", considering the discount?
It depends on what you want to do with it. I make singer-songwriter stuff, and heavily use the pianos and the drums contained in the product.
I also use the synthesizers for many projects, and I can whole-heartedly recommend them, though, if you are more into electronical music, you are probably going to diversify your library with plugins from other firms such as u-he.
>>
So it looks like my audio interface has had its support dropped with el capitan.

>>
>>60664637
First off, thanks a bunch for your comment, i'm writing this shit since this morning and nobody's answering me.
My doubt with Kontakt is what you said: i'm pretty much more focused on synthesis right now, and if i'm going to buy kontakt, it's becuase of its reputation, its discount and because i'm going to use it in the future more than i would right now.
Yes, i'm for electronic music and there are other synths that i want other than those from N.I. but they're not discounted, so i'm going all for N.I's. Can you tell me on your experience what do you think of Massive, reaktor and monark? I like the sound of monark and the concept of minimoog inspired, which might be a good training ground for my first analog synth in the future (a Moog), Reaktor looks like a great modular simulation and massive is a classic.
I don't know of all those things what should i get.

So Im looking for an audio interface. Are these any good?
>>

Post a screenshot of what happens after you click Hardware Setup

For the price they're one of the best. Focusrite, Presonus and Steinberg are all very good brands as well but their interfaces cost more but usually have better preamps; the M Track is just a good all purpose interface, sort of a jack of all trades master of none type deal. However it's worth noting that the higher end M Audio interfaces are actually quite good and are close or equal to the other brands, for less cost too, for example the M Track Quad is just a rebranded Akai Eie Pro without the meters and a slightly different case. I'm currently using the original M Track and it sounds nice, a little noisy but I imagine the new model sounds cleaner, if it's your first interface it'll work well for you.

Has anyone tried Presonus Studio One? It looks good, and seem like an exceptionally full featured DAW for the price but I haven't even heard of it until just now.
>>
>>60666606
Thats not the same as Buffer Size.
>>
>>60666810
It is.
>>
>>60666845
Then why does me test sound still crackle even though i set it to 5. I assume 5 equals 500 samples. That's what i had it on before i upgraded and it worked fine.

Also shouldn't i still be able to adjust Buffer Size in just that window when i used to be able to do it before?
>>
>>60666909
if youre on windows go to control panel
I have Steinberg ur 22 and I have to set it from there instead of in ableton
>>
>>60666909
5 ms equals whatever amount of samples it needs to have 5ms at your current sample rate.
You're running 88200, so 5ms is 441 samples.

As to your other question, dono. Maybe the version numbers changed and Ableton disabled it, maybe you were running DirectSound or WASAPI.

I stopped trying out new DAWs since Bitwig came out.

The hype just does not live up to the disappointment.

same I was excited for bitwig when I heard about it but ended up so disappointed when I tried it

Hey guys, I'm thinking about selling my microkorg, what are some other cool hard synths worth checking out?

>You're running 88200, so 5ms is 441 samples.

How does that math equation work
>>
>>60667367

I live by the old hawaiian saying, "If your drums aren't clipping, your mix is slipping."
>>
>>60666909

Did you always use 88200 sample rate? You'd have 441 samples with a 5ms buffer at 88200 but if you were using default Ableton setting of 44100 sample rate you'd need a 10ms buffer to have 441 samples.
>>
Is there a /prod/ wiki or something like that?
Need a mic for recording vocals, only have some AKG live mics and they don't sound too good
>>

sm58
>>
>>60667433

5ms is 1/200 of a second 1/200 of 88200 samples is 441

That's not really how it works anon.

>>60664865
One of my interfaces only has drivers up to Vista. They work in 7, but it's temperamental.

>>60667262
I replaced mine with a KARMA however long ago. That's gone now too though. Want to get an MS-20 and JU-06.

>>60667475
SM58 is a solid cheap option. I use an SM7, but you may want a condenser depending on what you're doing. I used to own an AT4040 for that.

>Since they're discounted, their Reverb, EQ and compressors ... are they worth?
Defiantly. The Effects are the main reason I bought Complete Ultimate. Excellent start to a studio if you don't already have a good set of compressors, EQ, etc

>I Read many good things about those from UAD, but the site says they require dedicated hardware ... did I understand correctly?
Yes, the way UAD stuff works mostly is you buy a hardware unit that takes all the processing power away from your computer.

Kontakt, taking into account the budget, do i have to consider it a "must", considering the discount?
Depends on how much you are interested in sampling? Its a very good sampler.
>I've got a preference for Massive, Reaktor inspires me because modular fuck yes, and monark makes me hard as fuck. I know that it's up to try and there are demos, which I will download, but I'd appreciate your opinion a lot... what do?
Buy Complete Ultimate in the sale. includes all of those and pretty much everything else...although I think it might only include Reaktor 5? If I had to chose from those 3 it'd be Reaktor, Its a no brainer really. I mean Monark is made in Reaktor

Ubuntu Studio

It's a full fledged distro packed with all the free prod software you could possibly need.

Enlighten me then.

>condenser
That's what I'm looking for. Though the AT4040 is still a bit out of my price range.

For dynamic mics I got a AKG D 330 BT (80s) and a D88S (for guitar). Still wanna get a SM57/58 for live stuff and instrument recording, but not perfect for vocal recording.
>>
>>60667585
>implying this is difficult
I'm not saying it's difficult, because it's done automatically by the installer. My claim was it was fucking ridiculous and going the long way at something that should be simple.

>I mean Monark is made in Reaktor
forgot to mention in case you didn't know that Reaktor also contains the monark OSC and filter.
its worth putting a bit of time into looking at what you really want from the effects side of N.I stuff. The Classic reverbs are very good, but my goto for reverb is still Valhalla vintage verb. The classic compressors are great I use the VC160 a lot on my drums, its a fantastic emulation of the DBX 160 compressor. although Ive not spent a lot of time with the guitar rig stuff yet there is a tonne of good effects that come bundled with that too. A great Roland space echo and lots of reverbs, saturation and lots lots more.
I bought Maschine and then Monark and Razor and then ended up just buying Komplete Ultimateits been worth every penny so far and apart from a few other plugins from Waves I've not had the need to buy anything else and can't see me needing to for the near future...although I'm vey tempted by the sale price of Reel ADT at the moment
>>
>>60664859
Can you tell me on your experience what do you think of Massive, reaktor and monark?

There are plenty of sounds which come with them, and they are quite tweakable. Don't forget FM8, which is also a great synthesizer with tons of sounds. And Absynth if you are into ambient.

Reaktor is probably the mighties of all of them, since it can produce sounds and process signals like halls, delays, reverbs, distortions etc. It is quite versatile. The last time I used it was in a pop cover for reverb and in combination with polyplex (digital/analog drum sample synth modeller) and another time for voice-over distortion of a spaceship pilot.
So, yeah, Reaktor is quite sick.
