I think their sound is more akin to The Who and Small Faces than they are to The Beatles or Beach Boys.
If you want a poor man's version of The Beatles, I'd suggest The Dave Clark Five. (Which isn't a put down, since I highly enjoy The Dave Clark Five)

92 actually. Used to be higher. And it often is placed higher on certain publications' lists. But it almost always makes the grade for the top 500 at the very least. And there are a couple other Kinks albums that make occasional appearances on these sorts of lists too. Face to Face and Something Else namely. But yeah, it is thought to be a pretty great album. And I happen to agree.

Nice dubs. I don't really consider relevance to be a requisite for greatness. Though it certainly helps as was the case for many of their contemporaries. The downside to that is, as you said, over-exposure. Anyway. Their early singles are fun, popular tunes, classic even. But to me, most of the deep cuts from their better albums could easily rival said singles. The songwriting was consistently top-notch, the sonic palette with which they worked is about as intriguing to me as any of their contemporaries. What could use more discussion around here actually is Brian Jones era Stones. Side note. Anyway. In short, that's why I'm a fan of The Kinks.
