Depends. I'd personally suggest listening to early sludge metal like Mastodon and Melvins first, however, if you prefer more uptempo stuff, thrash is fine if you're into meatheaded music (Listen to vektor if you want something slightly smarter, but with harsh vocals), Black Sabbath is basically the best beginner metal band, and if you like that there's a ton of bands that do their sound well. If you want pure cheese, listen to Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus.
Thanks to the fact that metal is kind of a clusterfuck of genres, there's no super clear starting point.

what kind of metal though? there's infinitely many subgenres within this genre and each of them are extremely differnet. For example I grew up on death metal/melodeath/black metal from Europe so naturally I think hardcore/deathcore/etc from the states sounds like horseshit.
