Think of it in terms of consuming any other form of media. If someone watches too much TV, they're considered an idiot. If someone plays videogames all day, they're considered a man child. If you spend all day WRITING music or practicing an instrument, there's merit to what you do, but don't think that most people in society view somebody who listens to 5 hours or more of music a day as anything but a selfish borderline retard.

Last.fm should be based around time as a unit not "tracks." I have an album composed of 78 4-40 second songs and an album thats just an hour long song. Even though I listen to the hour long one more, last.fm will say I listen to the artist with the short songs more because of more scrobbles.

You should check out more jangle pop then. I had a phase where I listened to a ton of jangle pop from the 80s and a lot of it is pretty great - that's how I came across The Pale Fountains to begin with. If you haven't listened to anything by The Go-Betweens yet, I recommend them and their album 16 Lovers Lane is a solid place to start
