not prog, but not bad

overrated, but not bad

why dont people ever discuss this album? it's a solid 8/10, with the only thing wrong being some bad takes and tape splices being left in

Wish You Were Here has a much more resonating message delivered by the band, and a far stronger musical core. The concept is far more raw and I'd say a lot more flexible than just simple madness. Half the album is devoted to the lunatic psychedelic renegade of Syd Barrett, and the feeling of his absence which had permeated through the band found itself unleashed on the LP, which had been brooding since his departure into madness and obscurity in early 1968. I'd even argue that musically it is a far stronger piece, with the Shine On You Crazy Diamond suite musically rivalling anything on DSOTM. Even the synths on Welcome to the Machine rival and destroy On the Run.

How is Wish You Were Here not prog?

shine on is more ambient and experimental than prog
wish you were here is more folk than prog
have a cigar is more blues than prog
welcome to the machine is closer to prog than anything else
i'm not saying it's not prog related, but it's not progressive rock. it's more psychedelic related than prog related
>>
>>60406354
How is Welcome to the Machine closer to prog than the Shine On You Crazy Diamond suite? If anything it's far closer to electronic.
>>
>>60406380
it's just more psychedelic than prog to me
this is just my opinion, there's no real "right answer" here i guess
>>
>>60406484
I suppose you could say that. I feel like Pink Floyd is very hard to pin down as a genre specific band because they kind of went all over the place at times.
>>
>>60406496
true
i think the wall and animals are their two "proggiest" albums
animals being a strictly progressive rock album and the wall delving into symphonic rock
>>
>>60406202
too be honest here, i haven't listen to WYWH in a while (more speaking shine on you crazy diamond), so i'm kind of fucked on that, i kind of felt some part of the album dragging, i love darkside flow of each song, i'm not sure if this is a good comparison, but i would call this the 2001 a space odyssey of albums, where to some it might feel like a boring filler, while to some its more of a experience than just music, i just love the flow of every song and the concept of madness.

Man, I've never seen that cover of Close to the Edge before. Is it a re-release or something?
>>
Yeah big fan of it. Recently discovered Closure in Moscow, they have a similar vibe to The Mars Volta.

This album is fucking fantastic. I heard that Wakeman wanted to have a seventh piece based on Henry himself, but he had to cut it because there wasn't enough space on the disc.

>>

Saw these guys perform this album and fragile in Australia this year I think. Was sweet
>>
Yup. Prog etc.
Dsotm=wywh > animals > the wall > echoes > everything else

Also;
Red = itcotck > discipline > everything else

And;
Ftm > ditc > amp > tremulant > all else
>>
>>60408629

I haven't really given that one a listen, but I would say it got overshadowed by many of their later albums such as Crime of the Century, Breakfast in America, and Even in the Quietest Moments.
