Leprous are the best modern prog band around. Prove me wrong.

>>
Not like anyone at all cares about modern prog
>>
Come on guys. OP here and even I think that modern prog is in shambles, but these guys are carrying it all upon their shoulders, I've never heard anyone sound even a little like their newest album.
While they obviously do take some inspiration from the rhythmical bands out there like meshuggah, all those bands have is their rhythm. Leprous truly create their rich, thick, almost black metally chords and then these huge choruses coming in like a sledgehammer.
Is anyone else even trying?
>>
Fucking finally OP good to see someone else has got this

They're literally the best prog metal band of all time as well

Agree, although Enslaved, Ne Obliviscaris, Haken Riverside, Gazpacho and Steven Wilson come close

The only one that's remotely as interesting as Leprous of those is Wilson, and that's debatable. Don't get me wrong they're all bands that I like, but they all have tons of flaws and none are anywhere near as innovative or as compositionally dense as Leprous

Except Wilson, but he has moments of crap too.
>>
>>60404831
>Except Wilson, but he has moments of crap too.
yeah like his entire new album
>>
>>60404433
You mean prog metal.
>>
God I just can't get over this damn album. I mean Belateral and TPS are absolutely Top tier with Coal and Aeolia close behind, but has anyone ever sounded like the congregation? Serious question, I need more.
>>
>>60404831
Leprous are more consistent, but Riverside and Enslaved had better highs than them in my opinion, like ADHD and AEO

>>60404838
>implying Routine and Ancestral aren't great

>>60404853
Not really, some say it has bit of djent with alternative rock, but they don't sound close to that

I'm pretty sure this album is a shining example of what's going in prog outside of Europe...
>>
>>60404921
Why does this get posted in every prog thread
>>
>>60404838
Yeah that's mostly what I was referring to. Routine is great though.

>>60404853
No, that's what makes it so incredible.

>>60404891
I'll give you ADHD as being nearly as good as Leprous' best, but nah I don't see Enslaved as being that great. All their albums are good but they're all the same. Axioma has nothing on any of Leprous' stuff stylistically or compositionally IMO

>>60404921
I remember you shilling this album a lot ages ago. I don't see how it's in any way significant
>>
>>60404891

fuck that those songs sound like the soundtrack from tim burtons worst movie yet where elfman is now aping pink floyd and fucking radiohead

gimme a break pal

Thoughts on this?

It's by a band who has Baard, Leprous current drummer and they support them on tour

https://rendezvouspoint.bandcamp.com/
>>
>>60405029
I like it. They do sound a bit like a poor man's Leprous but that's fine by me
>>
I mean, if baard is drumming on it it will probably be worth checking out.
>>
Also OP you forgot to mention that Einar has absolutely amazing and powerful voice with wide range, still disappointed that the new album had only 2 harsh vocal parts though.
>>
new Vola was the best prog of the year tho. The bands combining djent and pop with other metal styles are onto something and they do it more cohesively than most nu-prog attempts at genre-mixing

if TMV and Unexpect hadn't broken up I'd say those.
>>
>>60405337
Leprous definitely attempt some mixing with djent
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BMiPzfUMxc
>>
>>60405337
>new Vola was the best prog of the year tho

>a fucking pop rock album with djents in it is anything but a guilty pleasure album

Christ sometimes I forget just how awful some of your taste is man. Vola is about as prog as Disturbed
>>
>>60405378
they do, and their eclecticism is a lot less bad than stuff like native construct, but it's not in the way that Vola do it. Leprous mainly use start-stop rhythms and syncopation rather than true polyrhythm and the rolling rhythms common in djent.
>>
That Vola album was good, but definitely wasnt without its shortcomings. I also really love that Native construct album and I know a lot of people don't so each to their own.
>>
>>60405403
Stray the Skies and Owls tho
>>
>>60405415
m8 Vola have literally no complexity whatsoever. Coming from someone who likes them. They're basically just dumb, fun pop music.
>>
>>60405403
i put them in the same pseudo-prog boat as circa survive and coheed, their song structures are too ambitious to be called just pop rock. and the origin of prog was pop acts like the moody blues trying to push the envelope and add more ambition to their music

what i really like about vola is the synths. they work very well with the overall production and have a different timbre than most synths in prog metal which tend to have a very sharp and strong attack that can be too brash. Vola blend all the instruments together very well.

>>60405454
fair

>>60405447

Thoughts on Caligula's Horse and Arcane?
Jim Grey might be my new favourite singer
>>
>>60405479
Yeah I mean i get the appeal, but I can't call them anything revolutionary or great. They're just too generic to even get anywhere near a band like Leprous, who consistently make music that pushes beyond anything I know stylistically or compositionally.

>>60405483
Both great, although a bit forgettable at times. Arcane is the better by a long shot.
>>
any of you guys checked out Vultress? they seem like they'd be this thread's thing, i wasn't too into them but haken and leprous fans may dig
>>
>>60405539
Really really really bad production that puts me off so much. Also tendency to wank hard. Otherwise decent.
>>
>>60405537
Funny how CH became more popuular than Arcane despite being younger
Even though Arcane new album took 6 years to make plus it wouldn't be made without crowdfunding

Chronologically from Night
Or listen to first 3 if you like alt rock
>>
>>60405703
Thanx. I have Night already.
>>
Leprous are kinda hit or miss for me. I like them but not enough as other prog bands.

Right now my favorite prog metal bands are Haken and Devin Townsend. You can give Townsend as much shit as you want but I enjoy his more ambient stuff as well as his metal. I am really waiting for another album from Thank You Scientist, their first album Maps of Nonexistent Places was really good, and I feel they can go places if they match it with a second good album.
>>
Devin is falling off the wagon. Casualties of cool is the only good thing he has put out in a while,
>>
>>60405983
DTP is pretty good, but not as great as he once was with SYL and solo

Z2 was the biggest disappointment of 2014 for me
>>
now that i have time to think a little more, i'll list some recent prog metal and rock bands that I think go underappreciated, barring my usual posts like journal and painted in exile

Damn where do you find all these

nonstop rym wishlisting, that's basically it
>>
>>60406113
Yeah Devin is not as good as he once was. I really enjoyed Ghost and Casualties though. As a high anxiety person those albums are calming to me thus why I still really like him. He kinda has an album for every mood I am in, lol.
