best tips for getting back into the guitar?

started playing maybe 8 years ago and havent played at all for the last 4, wanted to get better at playing what i'm writing

i've just been practicing scales but i can't solo for shit and a lot of chords are awkward now
>>
>>60389864
those guys probably used a rat for distortion. think i read they used a lot of alternative tuning that they would come up with, with different tunings for each guitar. guess they would do that for each song. turn your amp up and fuck with feedback.

If you're trying to sound like Sonic Youth you need to learn how to play the guitar, not scales and chords.

are there any wah/ring modulation pedals?

>>
>>60389927
tuning your guitar to some dipshit alt tuning is a complete waste of time.
you're also gonna break lots of strings trying to do SY tunings. They restrung their guitars with weird mismatched gauges so they could tune like that.
>>
>>60389950
Not any good ones. You'd be better off learning proper technique.
>>
>>60389957
Well that's the type of music I want to play. So
yeah, that's kinda the info I'm trying to learn about.

every Sonic Youth fan has at some point thought buying G strings in bulk and tuning to C#C#C#C#C#F will transform them into a noisemaking songwriting genius

Are there are other bands that play guitar like Sonic Youth?
>>
>>60390063
Sonic Youth is a straight up rock band when you take away the invented tunings and embarrassing prepared guitars.
All their grooves and melodies are just plain 80s/90s alt punk rock.
None of their best songs require any screwdriver scraping or stupid tuning. All that was mostly just a live gimmick.
>>
Any A/B pedals controlled by midi?

There is a whole genre full of bands doing the stuff Sonic Youth did. Are you serious?

Can some of you post your practice schedules?

I'm looking to expand my own since it's all about downpicking, up-picking, alternate and then play some songs.

So looking at what some more advanced players incorporate, from specific exercises following one another or the time you spend on each thing, would help a lot.

And surely I'm not the only one curious about this?

>>60390226
I am an advanced player. I have found that what you put in is what you get out. I spend an hour on down picking, an hour on up picking, half an hour on alternate picking and then I play some songs. I hope this info helps you to become as advanced as me.
>>
>>60390423
Are there any exercises to help me with feedback?
>>
>>60390438
Fuck arround with it. When your neighbours come knocking on your door to complain about the noise, then you are doing it right.
>>
>>60390438
No. But walking around your amp with the volume cranked and gain up you'll find places where it feeds back easier. So go to those areas when you want to feedback.

Muscle memory takes care of scales and chords. You need to focus on the more abstract elements of playing guitar. Can you; do pulloffs, pitch harmonics, hammering, finger pick, use a pick without dropping it? What about your timing? Can you switch tempo or key easily?

I've been playing a 7 string for a while, but I'm still not sure whether I should get an expensive 8 string like the Strandberg (or even a custom Kiesel), or something cheap like an RG8, to test the waters, see if I can handle that extra string.

This is probably the best piece of advice for me in 5 or 6 years of playing guitar

Playing songs that only involve power chords, believe it or not, do not help you learn guitar
>>
>>60392967
what kind of squire is that
>>
>>60394659
kinda looks like those yamaha samuraij guitars
>>
>>60391386
I'm pretty sure Sonic Youth put a pickup behind the bridge. It's the nut pickup that is ridiculous.
>>
Welp my cube 30 took a shit and no amp repair guy near me will touch it. I'm gonna have to buy a new one. What do I get? I want something that is relatively cheap (preferably under 500$), and has a decent clean/distorted channel like a the rectifier setting on this thing.
>>
>>60389950
Snarling Dogs Mold Spore, but that shit's expensive.
>>
>>60394579
I used an 8 for a while with a high A. It's fun but I don't recommend it unless you like spending an hour tuning one string.
>>
>>60392709
I think that it's the Boss DD-5? One of those digital delays by Boss. They have this feature called hold and it basically keeps repeating the same note until you take your foot off.
>>
>>60394400
>only 2 loops
>only 2 stereo loops
>can't add more stereo loops
>>
>>60389977
I'd start with learning to utilize feedback and overtones before you start messing with alternate tunings, the tunings aren't any good unless you can get the guitar to sound right
>>
how do I write chord progressions that don't sound cheesy? ah man
>>
>>60395028
Just be yourself

get some pedals and they'll make the changes for you
>>
>>60395028
>tfw just started to try to learn this too
Maybe then I'll be able to finally write a whole fucking piece

>>60395092
>>60395111
I hope you have an actual amp because having more than 1000€ worth of guitar without being able to use them at full potential is dumb
>>
>>60392646
yea
>>
>>60395154
nope its (blackstar ht1-r) the only one i have atm. im planning to buy mashall class 5 tube amp in 4-5 months

>>
>>60395120
really? i guess so
>>
>>60395205
oh yeah, pedals do ALL the work
>>
>>60395178
I don't think a class 5 would be loud enough to gig with.
>>
>>60395219
that's ok. i don't plan on gigging just playing around the apt.
>>
>>60395219
i don't gig man. bedroom musician here
>>
>>60395217
oh, you're doing that
>>
>>60389864
Read up on their tunings and run it through tons of distortion.
>>
anyone interested in checking out my 7 string bass?
>>
>>60395250
lol dude. exactly my thoughts
>>
>>60389864
Forget how to play, live in 1980s New York and sleep with a music critic so he'll give you a favorable review.

>>60389998
And sweep arpeggios are just crutches for people who can't write songs.

See how easy this is?
>>
just got this as my first guitar https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/components/interstitial/view?ad_type=114&section=review&url=https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/reviews/electric_guitars/esp/ltd_mh-50

did I do good?
>>
>>60395275
no seriously, get an eight step sequencer and you can set the intervals and then just play the root and....there you go you're making music. Use a looper and then you can solo over it. easy peasy

BEADGCF, nothing fancy. always looking to expand that range though. although my left hand pinky is fucked, had to learn and have been playing with 3 fingers for 7 years now. its tough, really affected my playing style
>>
>>60390149
Digital delay and sample/loop/hold pedal.
Thing has enough computing power that it can take multiple samples and manipulate them in real time, up to and including playing the samples in reverse order.
Pretty slick, but it takes some learning to get into the weeds like that guy does and still have it sound good.
>>
Looking for a good practice amp, is a fender mustang a good choice?
>>
>>60395447
You should wish for the ability to play first.

Practice at high volume.

>>60390819
A good fuzz pedal can be inspiring when you learn to manipulate it with your guitar's volume knob

Other stuff:
Wah pedal
Delay pedal
Sample/loop/hold
Whammy pedal
Reverse simulator

Stuff like good compressors, boost pedals and distortion boxes aren't necessarily "fun" per se, they're more like REALLY useful tools that become cornerstones of someone's pedalboard.

/gg/ is not the fucking place for beginners to come begging for us to teach them. In the fucking sticky there are links available for you to use. Jesus just fucking Google "how to play guitar" before dragging your pathetic ass here to Come clutter up the thread with your shit posting

>cant move it sideways, stays under my ring finger when i curl my hand up
im only 20 so i know i have a lot of time to go, its just something i have to work around

Is a Marshall DSL401 a good amp for playing hard rock? i tried it and liked it, but think i'd liked it more with a little more gain.. but i'm also broke as fuck and a friend of mine is selling his

what do
>>
>>60395807
It wasn't always like this. Its like when you feed a stray cat. If we answer their plebian questions and pretend like their tastes, skills, and opinions are exceptable then they will never leave

>>
>>60389977
Okay so let me get this right, you are so unoriginal that instead of learning the basics of guitar playing and musical theory, you just immediately decide to start copying another band who ripped off the velvet underground.
>>
>>60391501
You get sympathetic ringing of the strings and dissonant echoes.
It's just an interesting way to fill out the sound of the guitar you're playing. Especially if what you're playing incorporates random noise and feedback like Sonic Youth'sstuff does.
>>
>>60395889
Yeah pretty much. Why?

Hey I have a question.
I currently record in my computer using a Boss ME-80. My question is, would somehting happen to the unit if I use a bass in there?
>>
>>60395862
>trip
>>
>>60395909
no it will be ok. some effects are specifically tailored to bass guitar but any will work. now if they'll sound good is another thing. but go ahead and try there is no way you can harm it.

tube tone

are you so unoriginal that you can't describe what you think a good tone is without resorting to saying tone you faggit lel
>>
>>60390438
Are you fucking serious? Do you understand what feednack is? Maybe before attempting something as simple as ripping off some other band maybe you should learn a bit about guitar because you are obviously clueless
>>
>>60395250
Don't play loud electric guitars in your apartment, you asshole.
>>
>>60395989

>>
>>60395845
Yeah then we might accidentally foster a community. Fuck you. It isn't like Guitar is some secret club, every asshole and their older brother has a fucking guitar. Why not help? Why not share ideas and tips, since I imagine 75-80% of guitar owners are novices if not totally new to the instrument?

At least throw some links at him. Don't make him take lessons at the middle school library so a 65 year old can show him Skip to my Lou with a thumb pick.
>>
>>60390045
Learn scales and chords.
>>
Fender mustang III for a practice amp, $190, cop or not?
>>
>>60395862
How new are you?
>>
>>60396097
Nah just learn chords. Forget scales, those aren't important until way down the line if you're really truly new. Learn like A, Am, E, D, C, G, F, and then learn the rest of the minors and 7s. Master those, and then maybe scales.
>>
>>60396112
How is that even a response to "tripfag plz"? Trips are a living nightmare
