All their grooves and melodies are just plain 80s/90s alt punk rock.

Muscle memory takes care of scales and chords. You need to focus on the more abstract elements of playing guitar. Can you; do pulloffs, pitch harmonics, hammering, finger pick, use a pick without dropping it? What about your timing? Can you switch tempo or key easily?

I've been thinking about getting an 8 string for a while, and I really like what I hear about Strandberg (super light, versatile, ergonomic, endurneck, fanned frets).
I've been playing a 7 string for a while, but I'm still not sure whether I should get an expensive 8 string like the Strandberg (or even a custom Kiesel), or something cheap like an RG8, to test the waters, see if I can handle that extra string.

Nah just learn chords. Forget scales, those aren't important until way down the line if you're really truly new. Learn like A, Am, E, D, C, G, F, and then learn the rest of the minors and 7s. Master those, and then maybe scales.
