I just really like it guys. I'm not an epic memester, this is just my favorite.

I think I'm going to stop coming to /mu/. I just listened to this because you guys talk about it all the time, and the only good song on it is the title track. All the other songs are just edgy songs about sex - which is probably why so many heavily-bearded, thick-rimmed-glasses wearing coffee drinking college kids obsess over the album. (Sung to basic bitch acoustic guitar strumming I might add.)
I'll give the guy that he's a decent lyricist, and the wording was clever and all, but how about a little variety to the lyrics? Also, I found his voice to be pretty shrill and irritating to listen to for about 50% of the album.
Overall it was a very unmemorable, at times painful to listen to album and I won't be listening to anything on it again except for the title track maybe a year from now.

Well shit, what can I say about this album that hasn't already been said by others who have a similar opinion as I do? First off, the instruments are abrasive and obnoxious. The horn sections, the noise, and all the miscellaneous instruments thrown into this release are nothing but grating accompaniments probably thrown in to makes the band seem "unique". Even the guitars just sound bland and unexciting.
I cannot stand the nonsensical lyrics that clutter this release. Songs about suicidal parents, teenage sex, Anne Frank, semen, and two-headed boys are not deep and meaningful, they're rubbish! And even if the lyrics did mean anything, the songs themselves wouldn't improve, being that Jeff Mangum sings just about as well as I do, which is off-key.
Someone please crash this aeroplane INTO the sea.

in the 50s, people were making that same argument about any kind of distortion in music, including electric guitars
i personally like the fuzzy, lo-fi quality of the recording, it feels warm to me.
and you're making complete assumptions about the band's intentions with the horns and instrumentation. honestly, the E6 group were some of the least pretentious people in indie music at that time, and they made what they wanted to hear
and the gripe about nonsense lyrics is understandable, because they are dense and pretty surreal (i know this probably sounds pretentious as fuck) hear me out. jeff was trying to access something really human and vulnerable with his lyrics. sex, tragedy, and bodily issues are integral parts of life, and i think he expresses the ideas beautifully. he rarely ever hits you over the head with anything cliche or some boring platitude about life, he's just giving you this stream of consciousness which at times sounds like nonsense, because at times our thoughts and feelings sound like nonsense
i realize i'm probably not going to change your mind, but in case anyone else is on the fence, i implore you to listen to this album with empathy. it's a warm, unapologetically emotional, surreal listen, and at least for me, takes me deep within myself and makes me feel okay about how fucked up life is

As a fan of black and death metal, I found it hard to believe that any album could really bring me to a throbbing headache, a "folk rock" album nonetheless. But let me tell you, Neutral Milk Hotel has gone out of their way to make their music excruciatingly painful to listen to. This album is really nothing more than a load of drunken wailing slapped on top of random chunks of conceited guitar wankery. The lead singer here misses every note on the entire album with entirely masochistic intent. I can't believe I seriously sat through this entire hideous train wreck of an album. Sure, I'll give it to props in that there are a few catchy acoustic licks here and there, but that's really all this album has going for it. Fortunately for the rest of us, there are countless other bands that also play catchy folk rock but still manage to stay in key. Honestly, forget this album and all the pretentious hippies who claim you don't "get it" There's nothing to get, it's a horrendous album plain and simple. Steer clear.
