Christ man, how did you avoid it for so long? Not the guy you replied to, but that album is completely mediocre if you've heard basically any other ambient album. The only reason it got any popularity was half because it was self promoted and viralled to death, and half because it hopped on the vaporwave train. But as a stand alone album, it hardly stands up among the tens of thousands of amateur ambient albums on bandcamp. You should check out some of the ones on this list if you want to get into good ambient. Or just listen to the Blade Runner soundtrack which 2814 completely stole their sound from.

The vaporwave influence is key to its success. It sells the concept of a futuristic Asian city really well with its lo-fi new-age-ish elements and synths. People have had that itch for a long time and 2814 scratches it. Those other ambient albums don't cater as effectively to a particular desired theme.

There's nothing really lo-fi about it. It's just some pirated TAL VSTs in fruity loops with sample pack presets. If you're looking for the whole Japanese futurist fetishism, like half of everything that came out of the German kosmische scene did it undeniably better. There honestly isn't anything unique about its themes, or aesthetics, and what it tries to do it does very medicore. I wouldn't say it's a horrible album, but it's lackluster to the point of deserving very little recognition. Certainly not what it's gotten thanks to HKE's vicious viralling tactics he's used for everything he touches.
