Some anon posted this image a while back. They're albums that Joanna Newsom has mentioned at one point or another in interviews as inspiration. Around the time Divers came out I went back and listened to Milk-Eyed Mender. Then I listened to the Billie Holiday album on this list, Lady in Satin, and it hit me: at the beginning of her career, Jojo was trying to sound like her. At least a little bit.

Sufjan has done very well in styles ranging from electronic to folk to homoerotic baroque pop, and clearly has a great knowledge of songwriting to make Impossible Soul and 4th of July both work so well despite being completely different styles.

What does that even mean? Newsom has entire stylistic shifts within single albums, while still making music that is compositionally and lyrically superior to Stevens overall. I'm a big fan of Sufjan as well, so this comparison has come up often for me personally, and that's just the conclusion I've come to.
