I saw Deafheaven last night and it really gave me a new appreciation for New Bermuda. The more overt metal sections work well live, and make the post-rocky stuff even sweeter by comparison.
I wish they had kept the shoegaze levels high instead of sort of phasing the sound out though.
>>
>>60321913
When I saw them they played Sunbather and Dream House during the encore, and I have to say I like the way those sound live more than I liked the NB tracks, but I like NB more as an album.

>it's shoegaze because it's fuzzy
That's just a marketing term for the black metal elements. Shoegaze is a fancy world and goes well with the pink album cover and helps market the album.

I don't know how, but Deafheaven managed to appropriate black metal and shoegaze all in one album and you plebs actually bought into it. As a fan of Deafheaven, I wish most Deafheaven fans left this board and every music forum

Why did I find this version frustrating? Like, I'm getting all tense by how annoyed it is. Looping the part right before she goes into the orgasmic high pitch, it's like it's taunting me. Even still, I feel physically sick after listening to it, which should be an exaggeration, but I really do.

more of a proto-ethereal wave imho, then Faith would be a better rec.

The Cure's influence on the Cocteau Twins and the rest of the ethereal wave/proto-dream pop/proto-shoegaze wave is really clear in Faith.

thinking about adding pinkshinyultrablast's album to the chart... any other 2015 albums that you think deserves to be on here?
>will probably say no don't be mad
>>
>>60330753
You could link the MoffP album from Mikgazer if you want to introduce vocaloid shoegaze as an offshoot of Japanese shoegaze
Spectres' album could go up in the noise section too
Also I'd definitely switch out Clams for a cruyff in the bedroom or my dead girlfriend album
>>
>>60330795
Since I have space for it, I might add the MoffP album, but honestly I don't think it's good enough to be put on the chart... if there's no other vocaloid shoegaze maybe. Why cruyff in the bedroom rather than clams? I get my dead girlfriend but they're more or less interchangeable to me. I might add it in addition.

I'm really iffy about Spectres because I really don't think it's very good at all and I don't understand why this board loves it and I assume it's just a few people posting it repeatedly. But I'll think about it.
>>
>>60330873
I'm seconding Spectres. get some taste, are you /mu/'s biggest pleb or something ahhahahahaha???
>>
>>60330873
I figured the chart was less of a "here's the essentials" and more of just "here's as much as I can link together", so I wasn't really thinking about whether or not stuff would needed to be traded, but yeah, most of the Japanese shoegaze is interchangeable I guess, just personal preference on my own part on those two artists
If you wanted to add a couple vocaloid albums might not hurt, considering it's its own mini-niche inside another niche; if people are interested it'd at least be more of a starting point than just one comp, but that's ultimately up to you desu

;) ;) ;) ;) ;) though honestly I really don't get it. I'll probably add it... It just feels like noise thrown on top of generic riffs with mediocre vocals. I'm thinking about adding another branch somewhere with Weed - Deserve, maybe I'll figure out how to attach them.

>>60330947
It's more of a "here's as much as I can link together that I feel are the most notable shoegaze albums that are a starting point for more niche stuff" you feel?

Spectres doesn't deserve a space imo, such a boring album soundwise and inconsistent as hell. They and METZ sound to me what Thirtysomethings with beards and bald spots working for music publications would think of as 'really noisy crazy music'.
Hell, I'd say add the Downyard years to come EP instead of Guilty of Everything since that album had a few really boring tracks too

>>60324901

I feel like these guys are quite a bit underrated. Their debut EP is really cool too, even more in the gothic/bluesy direction I'd say.

Spiritualized should switch names with LSD and the Search for God.
>>
How good are Ride gigs? Are they loud and noisy?
>>
Guys I found Spooky on CD for 5 bucks, good find or nah
>>
>>60345351
Really good. They played my favorite track, Nowhere, as the encore when I saw them. They also played Tongue Tied for the first time too.
I would say they are pretty loud. I could feel the bass. Drive Blind is easily the noisiest part of the show.

Apparently they've been soundchecking Grasshopper but have yet to play it live :(

Ya'll been enjoying the new Xinlisupreme. It's not quite up to 4 Bombs level for me, but I'm still really into it.

can anyone recommend me some more albums like Deathconsciousness? I'm craving for some suicidegaze.
>>
>>60346504

Their latest release isn't as noisy, but they've always been on the edge of Noise Rock/Shoegaze.
>>
>>60346933
replying to myself here.
I'm currently listening to The Angelic Process - Weighing Soul and Sand.
It's got some great soundscapes but I'm looking for a little less metal more in the vein of Have a Nice Life.
>>
>>60347373
Dan is in like 5 bands
There's nothing really like it though
>>
>>60346651
I'll see them on Sunday and I doubt they're going to play it there either. I'll just be happy to hear Chrome Waves, Cool Your Boots, Time Machine, and/or OX4 live.

I know nothing about actual shoegaze production. What guitar effects even create the vacuum cleaner sound?
>>
>>60350285
I think there's a Shallow Rewards podcast on shoegaze that mentions a certain pedal that was the "skeleton key" for Kevin Shields' sound.

As for any generic shoegaze band people are chill with jsut a fuzz and reverb or whatever.

Loveless pretty much has no extra production done. The guy just wanted it to sound the way it came out the amp and for the vocals to mix in with it. It wasn't even in stereo.

Anyone like this guy?

Literally what I started writing lyrics about today at like 3pm (spoilers: they're shit)
"
I can't get out of bed again
they'll get me anytime now
my lungs don't fill with air too much anymore
I'm not sure if I'll make it

Why do I fear sleep
then never want to wake
why do I seek refuge in my dreams
"

Thank god no one can hear vocals in shoegaze songs
>>
I was just wondering, is Loveless supposed to be so quiet compared to everything else? (like on same volume setting it's noticeably quiet)
>>
>>60354996
Depends on the rip you got. I think there's a typical "CD mastered" version where everything is compressed as fuck and one where the dynamics are completely intact.

If you want to know more about the topic, look up "loudness wars" on Google or wherever.
>>
>>60355132
If you don't mind me asking, where do I look for the rip with intact dynamics?

>>60355349
Shoegaze somehow works better in EP for, f.e. Distressor is amazing, yet all albums by Whirr are pretty generic.
>>
>>60355393
I always thought that was just a whirr thing.
>>
>>60355581
Well, LSD and the search of god is only an EP, then there's Tremolo, Downward years to come, that one EP that Wavves did with Zach Hill that's sorta kinda shoegaze...

Has anyone else listened to this? Ive seen people call it shoegaze but it's more in line with noise or alternative rock than shoegaze.

Picked this up today. I'd heard of Boris beforehand but hadn't listened to even a single track. It's pretty good.
>>
>>60363997
Boris fans apparently hate this album and I'm not sure why.
>>
>>60364069
Probably because it's got a lot of dream pop and pretty light compared to their earlier works it seems
>>
>>60364069
As a Boris fan, I fucking love it.
Not quite as good as Feedbacker tho (which you guys should check out too, it's a one-track album with an amazing crescendo).
