I've pretty much been a purist of instrument based music for my whole life, and every time I try to broaden my horizons to electronic I encounter this problem:
Pretty much all electronic music I've heard has literally no harmonic depth. A quick test with my piano usually reveals that every note in most of this music is comprised of white keys, which means nothing i've heard strays at all from the regular major/minor modes. This is also a problem i have with rock (though to a slightly lesser extent) because its so obvious to me when guitar players are writing based on moving shapes and not their ear.
I'm not looking for fucking electronic beethoven or anything but just some more advanced harmonic stuff.
It seems like the infinite possibilities of the electronic medium are totally stifled by its practitioners complete lack of musical training.
I'm tired of hearing songs in the key of C, A minor, or cycling between Fmaj7 and Em7 (which are all white keys)
Help me out, flame me, or just defend electronic music ITT

Squarepusher may be what you're looking for
:)
>>60276040
.....just no to all of these. Exactly what i was talking about. White key core
>>60276121
Dude THIS is what im talking about holy shit. So awesome sounding
Try IDM
also I play guitar and don't know any music theory and just move shapes and "numbers" that I know sound good together.

Check out his albums Ultravisitor and Hard Normal Daddy
Man is a virtuoso bassist and drummer. Definitely worth a look
>>60276184
not saying theory is the be all end all of composition but this kind of writing is what makes so much guitar music musically insubstantial
>>60276210
found Feed Me Weird Things first and loving the crap out of it. First time ive ever liked this kind of beat
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HV-C2jr3i9g
>>60276228
Oh that album is also really fucking amazing
If you like more of the funky stuff he does, Hard Normal Daddy is fantastic
If you enjoy more of the glitch and the odder tracks, Ultravisitor and Go Plastic are great points to go
Overall, he's a very literate and talented musician; you really can't go wrong
Hope you enjoy!
>>60276257
Yea you just singlehandedly saved the credibility of this massive genre for me
Eric Prydz does has done a fair bit of modal stuff
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAxz-6bIMlM
Deadmau5 does plenty of modal stuff too
just look deeper into progressive house m8
>>60276298
this is kind of where the problem comes in for me. Modal music has its place but it definitely has this quality of not moving anywhere over the span of the track since its stuck on the rails of only 7 notes and no changing bass note.
*tips fedora*
>>60276279
But really did you look at these big room house producers and who make bangers for the masses and think "is this all"?

>some more advanced harmonic stuff.

>A quick test with my piano usually reveals
if you can't tell this by your ears and have to physically try to replay it on a piano in order to tell... does it really matter?
thb drop your ego pham

>>60276020
as >>60276514 pointed out... it seems like you can't tell this by your ears. therefore, you aren't really tired of hearing songs in those keys because you don't really know without having to play them out yourself.
Stockhausen
Pierre Schaeffer
If you're listening to dance tunes that use scales, then you're probaly listening to shitty music tbqh.
>there are still people who think electronic music is inherently simple and danceable
this stereotype is sad desu
>ctrl f
>no Kraftwerk
If you wanna get into good electronic music you gotta start from the beginning senpai.

Do you know anything about music???
>>60276724
>>there are still people who think electronic music is inherently simple and danceable
Well its true for synthpop, hip hop, ambient, industrial, techno, house, breaks, trance, garage and downtempo at least.

>>60276805
Some of those genres are mostly meant to be used in a club setting, but saying they are all "simple" is ill informed and stupid
>>60276812

EDM is shallow trash pleb music. You had to do a quick test on your piano to figure this out?
>>60276812
>someone literally took the time to make this
>>60276279
you should try autechre next ;)
A truly genuine artist creates his art from his imagination.
creating art by following some "theory" is kind of missing the whole point of self expression and art.
>>60278977
but knowing music theory broadens your perspectives and you understand music to a higher level which enables you to come up with creative ideas easier
>>60279028
I know some music theory but i never, ever used it for my compositions. i would rather just imagine something and play what i imagine, or just improvize until i come up with interesting ideas.
Listening to many types of music and exposing yourself to new genres is what actually broadens your artistic perspective, not theory.
That's my opinion.
>>60276020
Check out Haywyre - Two Fold Pt 1 & Culprate - Deliverance. I think you'll particularly like Deliverance if you like Squarepusher. Could also check Maxo
>>60279028
not necessarily
you can get blank canvas syndrome, you don't usually get creative music coming from concert pianists
>>60279062
Unless you're making seriously avant-garde shit, you're probably working withim the framework of music theory anyway
>>60279090
whether what i play has some "theory" behind it or not is completely irelevant when what im playing is originating from something within me, my own passion and imagination.
It's my own self expression.
Music theory is just that, a theory.
There is no proof for music.
>>60276020
music theory? no.
