Well I'm listening to a new EAI album every day of November

Anyone got any more obscure recs, because I'm burning through the essentials pretty quickly

:)
>>
Here is the new /daily/ Favorites and Essentials chart!

I used Topsters so this thing shouldn't be as much of a pain in the ass to edit as the last one. If anybody wants changes or additions, just say so.

Should I try (and fail) to listen to the entirety of the chart again?

Haven't been keeping up with the calendar, but here's the past few days

>Cassetteboy - The Parker Tapes
Nothing super impressive, but surprisingly entertaining and even pretty funny at points. There are some tracks here that are actually really good, with multiple samples playing cohesively and interestingly, but usually it's just kind of boring back-to-back sample playing for comedic effect. There's 98 tracks here, but most are under a minute.

>Position Normal - Stop Your Nonsense
A really cheery little album. It's not strictly sound collage/plunderphonics, because there seems to be some guitar playing scattered throughout the album, but a lot of it seems to be sampled, not that it really matters. I'm a big fan of 'Major Organ and the Adding Machine', so this is really up my alley. A lot of the stuff here is short and sweet, with all the sounds working towards pop-ish songwriting ends (ala Major Organ or The Books).

>Yoshinori Sunahara & Hibiki Tokiwa - Limited Edition Not for Sale
Not particularly interesting stuff. More back-to-back sampling, very little collaging, overlaying, or source manipulating. Reads more like an experimental-ish DJ mix than an album. It's got a lot of those super stereotypical sound bites about music and sound, interspersed with entire songs.

Today, I listened to 666 by Katharsis.
That was okay, but there really isn't much to say about it. It's pretty much your typical lo-fi black metal album, and it doesn't really try to be much more than this, ending up in a really monotonous tone.
>>
>>60270382
It's not even that. I think it's very good that he talks shit because it is always a good reason to have a discussion/argument. However, he just has this "thing" where he needs to be the last one to throw a sentence and that's way too meme. I guess some old Hampy habits die hard.

>Joanna Newsom, Live at Salle Gaveau, Paris 11/08/15

I wasn't really well placed with a bar in front of me which served no other purpose than blocking my view on the piano and keyboards. I also couldn't see the drums from the balcony. Weirdly, I heard more people speaking English than French around me.
The concert started by a 30 minutes set by her band's members Ryan Francesconi and Mirabai Peart. It was entirely instrumental and very rich. They're really showed how skilled they are as musicians. The songs often stopped and resumed on an entirely different melody. It reminded me of Jim O'Rourke's The Visitor. The compositions had some kind of an eastern sound with Ryan playing the Baglama. That was very nice so you should check their stuff.

Now for the main show, Joanna started with the usual Bridges & Balloons followed by Anecdotes which is simply an awesome song. Then she played Divers and I was absolutely blown away. The intro on the harp is otherworldly and in the middle of the song, Ryan started playing some kind of small percussion instrument which really changed the whole thing.
She also played Monkey & Bear which was obviously fantastic. The last part of this song is probably the best thing she's ever done imo and I almost cried when the drums kicked in. They were really powerful and filled the whole room. She also forgot some of the lyrics at some point. The songs from Divers were all great and I think it made me like the record a bit better. Leaving the City and Divers are something to hear live I think. The songs from her other albums were also amazing. I wish she played Baby Birch or Emily but the ones she picked were still some of her bests (Which songs are not though?). The encore was the absolutely best version of Peach, Plum, Pear you could ever hear with harp and guitar instead of the original harpsichord. I hope someone recorded that.

10/10 concert. It was too short.
Benji, I wish you to experience that in your lifetime.

Is my grammar consistently that awful or was that OP an extraordinary display of my ineptitude?

Yeah, I think that op text does make it seem like daily is literally /just/ memes. I mean it's mostly memes, but there's a little discussion. We need a happy medium between this and the old one.

Also, I gave Key to the Kingdom a few more listens over the weekend and yeah, it's a fuckin 5 star release. What an immaculately beautiful compilation of music.
>>
>>60271655
Nah you're fine m8, people like to criticize. It got the point of the threads across, that's all that matters.

>>60270905
Yeah that about sums up this place. In general I feel like the quality of discussion here is a little higher and a lot more general, that's one reason I like it. Mainly though, I don't know anyone irl that likes music as much as me, so this is where I can go to causally talk about music and have people know what I'm talking about. I feel like that's why most of us are here. We're just lonely people loosely bonded by a hobby.

yuo see Ivan, when you release an album in 2015, you only get a 9 or a 4

>Oneohtrix Point Never - Garden Of Delete

This album is very incoherent. And this is the nice way to say that you don't understand what the fuck is going on most of the time.

There is no peace for this record: the melodies, the instrumentation, the rhythms, everything changes, without a pause. Does this mean that is very interesting to follow? No, absolutely not, because almost nothing has anything in common with anything, and this is very frustrating for me.
Fortunately there are a couple of songs that are constructed better, that to me seems like an island in the middle of this chaotic and random ocean; sadly they are the minority here.

Daniel is a great sound-designer, and some of the synths and passages here sound fantastic, also thanks to the crystal clear production.
The glitches make everything more exciting.
But sometimes he makes some...weird decisions: some songs and melodies seem to be taken straight off a big room house (Sticky Drama) or Happy Hardcore songs (near the end of Mutant Standard), but under drugs.
I'm really not a fan of this type of music, so it's easy to see why I hate those passages.

I don't know, Daniel throws to us a lot of stuff, without giving it any context or style and, even if some things are very nice to listen to, an equal part of moments aren't really my genre.

4/10

>Funereal Presence - The archer takes aim
>black metal

Dark black metal with surf influences, it sure sounds like it could be fun but I feel it could of been implemented better. The whole deal is wonky for me and couldn't get into this

>Fyrnask -Eldir Nótt
>atmospheric black metal

I really get a kick of well place dark ambient sections in metal especially when it has some ritual roots in it. The album itself is pretty engrossing with solid riffs , great vocals, and surprising use of choir and some classical instruments including the cello and wood wind instruments.

>Hexis - XI
>black metal, sludge

More sludge than black metal I suppose, offering a fast pace and brutal experience with some blackened vocals growling something or other. I liked it but it did caught me off guard a little, expecting of a more atmospheric experience given the album cover.

Smokestack (1966) by Andrew Hill, recommended by trianglecubed

Okay, I know. It's a shaky start. Smokestack doesn't so much rush out the gate as limp: the title track is a muddy arrangement for Hill's piano, two basses, and drums which has each of the players plod all over each other, falling in and out of time and begrudgingly ceding the leader his solo. On top of that, it's awfully recorded and balanced, with the players sounding like they're coming from separate rooms. But wait: this really is just a false start, I promise. Even where things fail to gel at first, we already have the basics that make Smokestack a beguilingly original and ultimately successful statement. Two bassists? Daring compositions and arrangements? Solos which are not so much spotlight moments as opportunities for an individual to drive the group forward? Each of these things occasionally gets in the way, so to speak, but more often than not they strike lucky notes with generous returns.

Andrew Hill is unfamiliar to me, but his pianism and compositional voice make me feel like I've known him for years. His playing both cool and slightly out-there, simultaneously. Frequently he'll voice his chords in blocks of fourths, or move in obstinate and granite-like parallel chords up and down the keys. These things might well be drawn from the McCoy Tyner school of piano (especially given the contemporaneous date), but in Hill's hands the fire and passion is tempered, restrained, abstracted into something more quiet, considered, and cool (which is to say, cold). He's immediately hitting all my good notes, and his solos are likewise more calculated and often more spacious than adherents to the 'soul' of jazz might care for. But 'soul' and space are not irreconcilable, as Ahmad Jamal decisively showed (another pianist who I suspect Hill is modelling himself upon), and for all his detached and modernist surface presented here, it's impossible to imagine Hill following Coltrane's acolytes down the rabbit-hole of 'energy music' a few years down the line.

The backing is also worth commenting on, for better and worse. Roy Haynes is his usual sweet self, cheerfully pushing the group along with characteristic swing and syncopation. Even in this somewhat different ensemble Haynes's familiar hard-bop past peeks through, which perhaps serves to ground the more experimental side at work (truly he is the heart of the group). The drummer's solos on 'Ode to Von' and (especially) the swinging 'Not So' are among the best I've ever heard from him. The two session bassists completing the quartet are occasionally used to striking effect, as on 'Wailing Wall' where one appropriately moans on an arco, static melody whilst the other pulses on a gripping pedal point in the depths. Once or twice the double-double-bass arrangement allows one of them to truly solo freely whilst the other holds down the ground. But I also found this facet of the record volatile and often just as likely to fail, hence the muddiness of the opening track which rears its head in other spots too. I can take it or leave it.

The compositions, though, are what really shine. Hill may be pushing some increasingly atonal and daring fare, but this is balanced by a solid melodic sense which keeps things flavourful, if not sweet. 'The Day After' is a damn cool tune, and the aforementioned 'Wailing Wall' rather abruptly shifts from static moans to a beguiling, almost bop-like set of changes in its second half. The real gem is probably the bittersweet ballad 'Verne'. I say 'probably' because here it's fucking ruined by a wayward bassist trampling all over it throughout. You can see what he's trying to do, but maybe due to the horrible mixing the mood is ruined. I don't want to moan too much about the recording because it certainly gets better as the album progresses, but... fuck that engineer, to be frank.

Okay, I know. I'm ambivalent in many ways: this album should be so much better than it turns out - in fact, it could well have been a classic. It slips up in a lot of different places, but this is ultimately the outcome of a whole lot of gentle experimentation that equally turns out a lot of lovely moments. In whole, it's a definite success however, and I strongly recommend it to anybody interested in a different path through the post-bop of the 60s than is usually prescribed.

I'm very glad I heard this and I see where the praise comes from and how it inspired a lot of things. It jvst isn't my type of metal. I'm gonna give it a 5 bvt I don't have mvch to criticize, for what it tried to do it achieved it perfectly.
If yov like thrash with satanic themes bvt with a bit of hvmovr thrown in and some rock moments, yov shovld try this becavse it's probably the best one I've heard in this style (and by style I mean the rock infvsed thrash metal)

>Grimes - Art Angels

The intro “laughing and not being normal” starts off with pleasant string meshes and synth swells but then, as soon as her vocals enter, the whole musical direction of the album gets absolutely fucked.

“California” sounds like a Taylor Swift song with harsher synths. Fucking trash. What really gets me is the claps and the terrible snare off-beat snare sound. It’s not even a polyrhythm here. It sounds like the person who was mixing it forgot to come back and change it up. The vocal performance shows off how poor Grimes is as a vocalist. How many thousands female singers sound like this?

“Scream” sounds like any anime soundtrack “rock” track ever with harsher production. It is atrocious for the most part but I did like the shouting reverberations. All the gnarls and the breathing is cringeworthy.

“Flesh Without Blood” sounds like a Lana Del Rey track with a bigger amount of synths. I honestly think I would enjoy it more if it didn’t have all these effects thrown all over (especially that fucking fade out).

“Belly of the beat” goes straight into the trash. Claps, terrible acoustic guitars, literal crackles 40 seconds in… why? I feel like the entire instrumentation of this beat has already been beaten to death thousands of times before. There is also this extremely murky guitar solo that is barely even present in the mix. I really feel like I am listening to a raw demo or something, but no. This is the real deal. Just throw in tons of reverb and it’s all good.

“Kill V. Maim” sounds like any post-punk revival song ever with an extremely loud snare. I have to say that the beginning of the track was somewhat enjoyable because the upbeat synth reminded me off some fun moments on Visions. The chorus on this atrocious. The small interlude and the following outro were just ok.

“Artangelis” is more of the same shit that makes me picture these amateur female pop singers on YouTube with a slightly better production. The chorus was acceptable but the rest wasn’t. I think what ticks me off on the whole album up to this point are the guitars. They are so incredibly primitive and tasteless that it really breaks up the entire tracks. Not even the poppy vocal harmonies. The goddamn guitars.

“Easily”’s main piano melody sounds like it is played by a 3 year old. Basically it borrows from a lot of modern EDM piano progressions in the most unapologetic way possible. The drum machine stuff sounds quirky and fun though. Everything on this track is fairly childish but it’s the piano progression that kills it.

The filters, percussion, vocals, guitar and synths on “Pin” just make it sound like an EDM pop song. One of millions. Next.

The main single “Realiti” sort of does have an interesting percussive action but the 2 chord progression of the whole track…I have heard tracks like this so many times on the radio. Even the synths on here sound like presets. The small ending portion of synths is ruined by the guitar solo and the second punchy synth.

“World Princess part II” wasn’t that bad. Mediocre, but bearable. The percussion mix was once again shit, but the song overall was alright. Then there was the fucking filter at the end…

“Venus Fly” features Janelle Monae so I expected something bearable. It honestly wasn’t that bad if you disregard the generic EDM song progression. I’d type something but there is nothing particularly interesting going on throughout the rest of the track. Maybe that little bit with what sounds like someone playing violin during a stroke.
“Life In The Vivid Dream” has more of the fourth grader guitar progressions, filters and derivative Grimes vocals. Thankfully it lasts one and a half minute.

The closer “Butterfly” is an upbeat track with more “vinyl crackles” to start off a kick/snare/clap/clap song progression with swooping bass synth. A backtrack of girls laughing. Yep. Nothing out of the ordinary outside of that.

Um….this was utter crap. I’ll rather go and listen to old school Kylie Minogue stuff (which is actually enjoyable and good) than ever listen to this again. I think I should do that. Impossible Princess sounds a hundred times better than this and it was made 1997 and still sounds more progressive than this.

Album of the Week:
>Recondite - Placid
I've been a fan of Recondite for a few years now, since 2013's Hinterlands and last year's Iffy. There's something super enjoyable about this downtempo nocturnal house music. It's not really original or groundbreaking, but crank this up with a good subwoofer and it comes to life. It has a very smooth texture that draws you in.

Others of note:
>Gloryhammer - Space 1992: Rise of the Chaos Wizards
This record is fucking fantastic. It embraces the cheese and runs with it. If you're in the mood for some power metal, this is a top pick

>Maria Simoglou Ensemble - Minore Manes
This is some nice traditional-sounding music from the Eastern Mediterranean. Singing is in Greek and has great instrumentation

>Masaaki Suzuki - Bach Organ Works
One of the best Bach choral conductors plays some of Bach's most famous organ pieces, including Toccata & Fugue in D Minor BWV 565 - a nice intro to Bach on the organ.

>Sun Ra & His Arkestra - To Those of Other Worlds...
This is an interesting compilation spanning decades. A good intro to Sun Ra's music.

so i listened to 2 albums from the same country and year
but with very different approaches to whatever constitutes "ritual ambient"

>Sigillum S - Bardo Thos-Grol (1987)
this one's a pretty straightforward "old school" dark ambient album with ritual elements. it succeeds at creating a menacing, occult atmosphere, mainly because the ritual influences sound authentic (maybe they used actual field recordings, who knows). i have two problems with this record, however:
1, it follows the "regular ritual ambient" recipe way too faithfully and doesn't really feel unique
2, some parts of the album are too monotonous, even for an ambient record - i didn't expect to be bored halfway through this album tbqh
overall, it's a 5+/10

>Controlled Bleeding - Music From the Scourging Ground (1987)
this one's real hard to classify. at first it just feels like a hectic amalgam of ideas and influences that don't really belong - from ritual ambient and martial industrial to chamber music and folky tunes. there doesn't seem to be much of an underlying concept behind the album's structure - yet it managed to captivate me and i'm sure i'll return to this one a few more times.
maybe i'll understand it more.
or maybe this one's just one of those albums that simply shouldn't work - yet they do.
8-/10

Gorguts - Obscura
>technical death metal, avant garde metal
>recommended by Terminus

So, a usual part of my process when I’m listening to an album that I’m going to be reviewing is reading some reviews for it and generally trying to get some context for its significance and what I should be generally looking for, and something that struck me is how many people said the “realized this album’s greatness” after about 4 or 5 listens, but definitely not on their first. They mention how the overpowering dissonance and dizzying rhythmic experimentation leaves them absolutely baffled, but on a fourth or fifth listen, something just comes together and it reveals itself as one of the greatest musical experiences available. After listening to it, I can definitely understand this sentiment, as this is one of the most difficult-to-digest metal albums i’ve ever heard.

Not to say that i didn’t enjoy this album. I honestly think I got more enjoyment out of it on my first listen than most of those people, because a lot of it was pretty damn good in my honest opinion. The use of dissonance, in the form of vocals and especially angular and harsh guitar chords, pretty much permeates the entire record. I love how some of the riffs are just completely atonal, relying on a harsh metallic scratching to achieve a much more effective and BRVTAL sound than most metal bands can get with speed-tremeloing. This album most of all, just feels so fucking dense. Within the course of four bars, the drum pattern as well as the guitar riff may very well change about a dozen times, which admittedly can lead to some parts lacking a groove or overall direction, but once you can really lose yourself to the frenzy of it, you can reach a crazy meditative state, similar to what I feel listening to drone or noise. Songs like Rapturous Grief showcase the album’s ability to be chaotic and unbounded, while also maintaining a level of constant rhythm and direction.
>>
(2/2)

However, this particular song also leads me to one of my least favourite part of the album as well:
The vocals. Alright. I’ll admit I’m not a huge fan of screechy vocals or super guttural death growls, and I think this stems from a dislike of any vocals that stay on the same tone and note the entire song. Unfortunately, this album’s vocals are pretty one note (sometimes literally lmaoo) and the incredibly dynamic instrumentation of the rest of the band is sometimes overshadowed by the singer’s constant use of the same high pitched, blown out vocal style. Honestly, it sounds a bit like Captain Beefheart’s zany high pitched screaming sometimes, which clashes a lot with the really harsh and chugging guitars a lot. When he actually does go outside of this into a more emotional and dynamic tone (like on La Vie Est Prelude), or is just a bit further down in the mix (Illuminatus) the entire song is made so much better.

Overall: An enjoyably chaotic and dense metal album, albeit with some flaws. I’ll definitely be revisiting it, as I agree that it’s probably physically impossible to completely absorb everything that’s going on here in one listen.

ps. Sweet Silence is str8 fire †bh

My thoughts on A&D are the same- it's basically London Zoo 2. Flow Dan and warrior queen have great features once more, and the death grips feature is exceptionally good (albeit rather silly lyrically). I'd love more work between Bug & DG

If you are a fan of death grips or the Bug, or have been interested, this is absolutely worth a spin.

I remember Fuck a Bitch came out right before Death Grips broke up so it felt like it was gonna be the last piece of material we'd ever get from them.

What did you think of the whole "angels=side A, demons =side B" concept?
>>

What /trash/ thing? Also, nice trips. Will be updating the chart soon.

Wow I did not realize this
I definitely noticed a difference in the halves, and the latter is much stronger. That's really cool. Sort of enhances the whole experience, knowing that

yeah i agree, its a pretty cool idea, though it makes the album as a whole loses some of its unity

Thank you so much (as well as everyone else)

On a completely unrelated note, does anyone have a link to Wesseltoft Schwarz- Duo? I perused the archive and couldn't find it, maybe I just didn't look in the right place

Oh absolutely, no question

What do recommend on here the most? For someone primarily unfamiliar with eai, onkyo, free improv?

sugimoto is neat guitar noodling, and a pretty good intro.

sunshine has blown is very much indebted to free folk, and I know you're a jackie-o motherfucker fan so that might appeal to you.

just whatever you do /DON'T/ start with sine wave solo.

>canooooopy - 百夜を繋ぐ言の千切れ葉 [disconnected words connect the worlds]

This is a 19 minute long mini-album, and is concrete-sounding plunderphonics with a bit of a wonky spin to it. It explores quite a bit for such a short album, and finishes pretty nicely. I had no expectations going in to this, and I was pleasantly surprised.

I'm actually surprised I haven't heard more music in this vein. Most other wonky/purple sound I've heard has been dance beat-oriented, and doesn't really explore the abstract side of the wonky aesthetic.

Is "wonky" a buzzword, by the way? I've been using it a bit, but it sounds like one of those microgenre buzzwords.

Thanks, you're so helpful! I think I'll put sunshine has blown on-I've been intrigued by that cover for ages, too!

doing normie relationship stuff tomorrow, so no Soundtracks til sometime later in the week, but its coming!

In the meantime: two reviews!

Sequentia performing Hildegard von Bingen (1994)
>gregorian chant

Incredibly powerful music. By the end of the record you're put in a trance-like state from the incredibly beautiful vocalists, sparse but effective accompaniment, and incredibly composed pieces.

3.5+

Mulatu Askate - New York, Addis, London: The Story of Ethio Jazz 1965-1975 (2009)
>ethio-jazz

Phenomenal jazz tunes, good for both getting yr dance on and for having some good ol'-fashioned introspection. Ocassionally diverges into both lounge/cool jazz territory and avant/free jazz territory, and it does both well, but its at its best when it sticks with ethio.

3.5-

its a damn good record, and its my go-to EAI rec because
it's like one of the two EAI records i've actually listened to
.

Yeah so I made a shitty Weebly website to store our shit. It's not done, but I'd appreciate feedback on what to add or whether or not to continue making this. LEMME KNOW WHAT U THINK:
http://dailymu-sic.weebly.com/

Also I listened to Space is Only Noise which was pretty fun. I can't think of an album to compare it to because each song reminded me of something else. All I know is it'd be super funny/confusing to listen to while high.
Also listened to The West, which answers the question of what happens when you try to add a country flavor to glitch. It's... weird. I'm not sure how I feel about it yet.

Just finished listening, first thoughts:

>Sachiko M - Sine Wave Solo
Honestly, went in fully expecting to hate this album, and it was better than expected. I'm not all that familiar with EAI, aside from a few basic albums, but I had enough of an idea to have expectations for the album.

The first song was pretty cool, and got my hopes up. I was not expecting something so rhythmic and lively from an album like this. The second song was practically inaudible, but had a surprising amount going on when I turned the volume up. Not sure if I was supposed to play with the volume? For the first five minutes or so of "Don't Touch" I was positive this was what tinnitus must sound like, but it sort of clicked after that, and I could actually hear the tones changing and all the little details in the sound. Pretty freaky, actually. Still not a huge fan of the song, but at least I didn't write it off completely, I guess. After that, the album largely loses me.

"Don't Take" sounds like that classic minimal turntable shite, kind of like and is barely audible. I'll assume that the super low-frequency humming in the background of the track is intentional? Maybe that's just my ears still ringing from "Don't Touch". The next track, "Don't Stop" doesn't seem to have anything going on at all other than those basic turntable/tape scratching sounds? Is my copy broken? I'm not sure. I can't tell if half this stuff is supposed to sound like that, or if it's all supposed to sound like the first track. The last track tries to be interesting again, but largely falls short for me.

Idk, I'd probably give it a 2/5? Maybe a 1.5? I think I get how this style could be executed better, but I'm certainly not a fan of this particular release. How'd I do?
>>
>>60289292
replay the album on shuffle tomorrow and see how it holds up.

I loved this album initially actually, but it did keep getting better over time. As for the vocals, I actually think they're some of the best vocals in metal, one of the few ones in death metal that complement the music rather than hurt it. Maybe they have to grow on you though. Glad u liked it tho :>

Funny, I've always thought the high-pitched overtones kinda detracted from the vocals on Obscura; I like Luc's vox a lot better on Colored Sands
