Why is grime so stagnant?

It sounds exactly the same now as it did 10 or 15 years ago.

i think he meant grimes as in this girl

It's because there was a period when everyone tried to become rich and tried making pop. Now grime has matured and people are rereleasing that original sound from 10+ years ago because to the majority of people listening it's something new they never got to hear when it originally came out.

Also since this is the first time I've seen a grime thread here, does anyone want to give me feedback on a grime track I'm working on since the soundcloud/feedback threads are just for nerds just trying to up their soundcloud playcount

pretty much this, obviously tunes like thats not me and on a level are resuscitating the old sound, but the whole weightless thing has turned it the genre on it's head completely imo

>>55417944
No, it's nothing like trap. Grime is, in the broadest sense, UK hip-hop, although it has roots in a completely different place, that I won't try and explain since, honestly, most people on /mu/ really won't "get" it.
>>
All the best grime is being made by outsiders

why is /mu/ so fucking childish
>>
>>55418043
Great post mate. Every time I've tried to post about grime here I've had the same reaction images and chavposts repeated ad nauseam by people too ignorant and stubborn to actually explore it beyond the surface level.

Which is kind of tragic because I could see people well into their hip-hop, especially memphis shit, scatterbrained Flylo beats, airy cloud rap, etc. really getting something out of it. Heck, even fucking black metal or punk fans could find something to love in grime, from radio rips or set recordings where the MCs get so powerful, that they basically start screaming and everything is distorted from being turned up so loud to the point of clipping. Grime is punk at heart, after all.

The oblivious reaction to Kanye's Brit performance was just.. christ.
>>
>>55418043
dont pretend that as soon as uk garage gets mentioned that you wont dump the rest of that picture folder
>>
>>55418109
Man I used to listen to grime and UK rap in general but in all honesty its all gone to complete shit now don't force it

just go to /bleep/ m8 some of the guys there knows bare grime.
>>

>>55418147
It always used to start an absolute shitstorm, though I haven't been on here or /bleep/ for a while now
>>
It's changed quite a bit.
>>
Listening to JME and Giggs is that the best grime has to offer?
>>
>>55418142
Honestly its been coming back in the past couple of years. German Whip made movements and now Skepta's making even bigger movements to put grime back on the map.

The problem was that grime didn't pay so the best MCs switched to pop music, but German Whip, That's Not Me, On A Level, etc proved that grime can take a mainstream sound and get into the charts, so you've got youts like Novelist and the rest of The Square and shit coming onto it. Plus the old MCs who sold out to pop (Dizzee, Chipmunk, Kano, etc) are hopping back on.
>>
I've listened to some Dizzee, Kano and Skepta. Boy in the Corner is the notable thing I've heard from any of them. Pretty derivative passed that.

gimme one more album to listen to before I solidify my opinion on grime
>>
>>55418172
Grime literally had no progression in its style whatsoever, it just stayed exactly the same but with an influx of more trash artists attempting to recreate this style. it's just not working out
>>
fruity loops haven't released any major updates in that time.
>>
>>55418200
Giggs isn't grime he's just UK rap but he's pretty good. Jme is alright at times but he's not the best. In terms of grime albums, the best are probably Dizzee's Boy in da Corner, Kano's Home Sweet Home, Wiley's Playtime is Over. Skepta's albums are pretty decent as well, Konnichiwa should be great as the singles are sick so far.
>>
>>55418220
Skepta has been making that album forever. I thought it was supposed to come out March 1st?
>>
>>55418200
In a word, no. Not at all. Giggs is pretty detached from grime.

>>55418201
Chipmunk trying to send for everyone was hilarious. Devilman and Narstie slaughtered him.

>>55418209
Get into radio rips and sets. Best way to listen to grime imo, it doesn't really translate well to a studio setting. Go download Grimetapes: Wheel Volume 1, Slew Dem Volume 1, or any Macabre Unit set you can find on youtube.

Anyone would probably like Wen - Signals, though. Then check out Logos, Mumdance and all the weightless instrumental guys. SD Laika made a surprising amount of waves here.
>>
>>55418253
Yeah but then he got big buzz with the Kanye, Drake, Flatbush Zombies cosigns so I guess he's delayed it.
>>

>>
>>55418263
Honestly Chipmunk is a pretty good MC, but it was just laughable that he decided to send for bare veterans when he's just fallen off the map in pop music and was dropped in favour of Iggy by T.I.
>>
>>55418273

When Kanye first debuted All Day at the BRIT Awards, Skepta and bare other MCs were on stage with him, and he's actually performed with them in London in other occasions since.

Listen to Skepta's new track Shutdown, that's Drake talking in the beginning and the end. Drake also took a line from Skepta and also claimed that Skepta helped with the creation of IYRTITL. And he's been posting grime clashes on his Instagram.

Flatbush Zombies just released a track with Skepta like a month ago, it's pretty sick.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geAWQtevgdU
>>
>>55418315
He didn't diss Lowkey, Lowkey dissed him for making pop music. I don't think Chip cared because he was making p's at the time and topping charts with Chris Brown and shit.

People hated on him because his original grime tunes were fucking insane and he had so much potential but he ended up making really soft, really bad pop music.

I mean when you go from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDwI7KQAlD8
to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnlPoKxIzM0 in the span of a year or 2, you're gonna get hate

>My hatred stinks, I should leave it at home - but I love beef, can't leave it alone, I'm in the ends all I need is a phone, I roll deep and the deeper I roll the more they hate me, and with the people I know I can't win so I keep it on go

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfPP4YC8lLI
Too real. Trim is probably my favourite MC. His lazy and blunted out way of spitting pushes all my buttons
>>
>>55418358
Never understood this. Drake and Kanye are fucking huge. If they're cosigning grime that's only gonna give the genre more attention, which means that the best MCs and producers are gonna get attention and get more success, making it less likely for them to have to make pop music to get out of the estate.
>>
>>55418371
noone wants it worldwide, we just want someone to make some good tunes again

Oh come on, are you being serious? You think it's background makes the music somehow lesser? And IDM? Fuck me.

There certainly hasn't been much critical acclaim, since it used to be a strictly urban and underground movement. But, recently, as of the new explosion of interest, people have been digging out the older beats. No Hats No Hoods did a compilation of Ruff Sqwad's old records called White Label Classics that has had a lot of exposure. Most people can agree that it's a masterpiece as far as old-school instrumental grime goes.
