Ambient, downtempo or ambient techno?

Pick one, and why?
>>
>>55296130
Ambient techno
I like normal techno already so I guess that's why I like ambient techno a bit more.
>>
Ambient > Ambient Techno >>>>>>>>> Downtempo
>>
if you don't have the ability to enjoy downtempo you are by definition an autist fag
>>
ambient techno
>>
Ambient is pointless

Downtempo = ambient techno
>>
>>55296130
Ambient
Because sometimes when i listen to it i've got a strange feeling, it's almost ecstatic, i feel more lucid and in peace with myself. I guess it's when you listen to it at a certain moment of the day, i like it because it can really be in an harmony with your context.

>Ambient is pointless
What?

>Downtempo = ambient techno
What?? No no no no no.
>>
Recs for more albums as such, especially SAW 85-92

My pick is Monolake's Hong Kong for ambient techno
>>
i pick ambient techno > ambient > downtempo, but no aphex twin shit please.
>>
>>55297000
>What?? No no no no no.

Aside them being 2 sides of the same coin and downtempo being more of an umbrella term, downtempo has a wider variety and can cover complexity through any emotion of stylistic ethos.
>>
>>55297018
Some might say it's very different of SAW 85-92 but i think you might like it as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIkN8DnYh9E

>>55297040
>I'm too patrician for that meme artist apex twin
I bet your a sex machine
>>
Aphex Twin >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Everything else on this planet.
>>
can someone rec me something similar to Chihei Hatakeyama?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZqOuSLygh8
>>
>>55297079
But it's not equivalence. They are absolutely not two sides of the same coin. You could say ambient techno implies downtempo, but even then I could find some counter examples.

The rest of what you said is nothing but pointless verbiage.
>>
>>55297119
One is ambient techno
The other is ambient breakbeat
>>
Ambient is very mood dependent
Ambient techno and downtempo I'll listen to basically whenever.
>>
>>55296941

This is it.

This is finaly the reason why I'm going to leave this tasteless, brainless shithole, this pathetic excuse of a deutsh painting contect.

/mu/ is braindead and hasbeen for a long time. Imbecile opinions poping up left and right along with the emergence of mediocre "conscious" rap and boring indie-rock, leading kids to believe that music without lyrics is pointless.

Pointless.

You are pointless, motherfucker. I can't believe how mad I are at thise three fucking words. Fucking YEARS of discussion, fucking 1k5+ albums listened to, just to lead to one conclusion made by random anonyfag, one random imbecile proud of his pleb opinion, probably jerking it off to his mother and sisters, crying sometimes when remembering that time when uncle Rob tried to kiss you on the mouth when you were a child :

"Ambient is pointless"

This is over /mu/, I can't deal with plens anymore. This place is nothing but negativity bred to the point where Bob and Tyrone and agreeing on the sale form of popular music, aka the LOWEST, the fucking LOWEST POINT.

"Ambient is pointless"

You are the biggest motherfucker of 2015. I'm so fucking mad you dared to clic on "submit" without a double-thinking. If I had thje ressources to do so, I'd actively try to find you, buy a record of Eno's ambient works, and slip it in your ass, little piece by little piece. After the two of three hours of insertion, when you'll try to shit it out, we'll see who the pointless, assface.

I was there. Hi mom.

I agree btw, kind of the reason why I originally left years ago.
>>
A lot of the time ambient music is only there for me to serve an express purpose whereas with the other two I can listen for no reason really. In the case of these albums I'll listen to airports only when I'm studying or in a rare mood for it (although I do love the album). Animal Magic is a quintessential listen for me at pretty much any time so I guess that wins by default.

I'll start: Fennesz - Venice

downtempo encompasses quite a bit, I'd probably have to pick it out of the three

>>55297220

You absolute dickhead, you don't get the point, don't you ? It goes way too far above your manlet's head, way beyond your memerap's reach, right ?

I'm not even insulting you. I'm actually trying to make you understand what Kendrick, Kanye and Ride have a hard time teaching you : you are the ultimate pleb, you are way too concerned about what other people think about you.

Guess what ? I don't have to justify myself about "Ambient is pointless" because it should be fucking ILLEGAL to hold such a trivial opinion. Ambient is literaly, L I T E R A L Y the point of music.

Do you understand that I'm trying to show you that your memes are embodying your plebness ?

This could all have been different. You and I could have been friends, talking about the merits of ambient music, but no, NO, you just HAD to shit all the way down Eno's masterworks because you can't handle music where there are no lyrics.

Guess what moron, Jesus Christ HIMSELF would have listened to ambient if he could.

That doesn't even qualify as a point of view. I'm not even going to respond to it if you're not willing to do any elaboration. Arguments from authority aren't strong cases either.
>>
>>55297324
I kind of find it a midpoint between downtempo and ambient, it takes more of the ambient atmosphere than downtempo but still has some beats like downtempo, although yes i know they are different kind of beats

At the end of the day the difference between ambient techno and downtempo is all about the bpm, right?

Around 90 bpm for downtempo and 120-130 for ambient techno

Most of it certainly is but that's an overstatement, closer to 90%. Almost all of the downtempo I listen to is specifically not rooted in breakbeats.

Has anyone here listened to Klaus Shulze and Steve Roach ?

I may love ambient but I can't stand this subgenre, something new-age-y I think.

Anyway, which Supersilent album should I begin with ?
>>
>>55297477
Have you heard Tangerine Dream?
>>
>>55297428
Aural Float
Bjorn Torske
Move D
Gas (the em:t artist)
Ian Pooley
I:Cube
The Other People Place
Matthew Herbert
Peter Benisch
Rei Harakami
The Sushi Club

Admittedly I found far more breakbeat-based downtempo from my library than I expected, but even then most of the breakbeats are not sampled "breaks" but rather sequenced stuff that happen to be breakbeats.
>>
>>55297501

Not yet. What do you rec ?
>>
>>55297477
Its called space ambient, I really love it tho
>>
>>55297507
Fair enough, theres always exceptions to the rule but overall I think its fair to say the majority/underlying crux of downtempo is breakbeat based largely.
>>
>>55297527
Roach is pretty far from space ambient. His music is strongly rooted in earthly subjects.
>>
>>55297517
Start with Phaedra, then Stratosfear and Rubycon. The rest is your beast to handle.
>>
>>55297543

I listened to his Dreamtime Return, it seemed very close to space ambient
>>
>>55297098
the backlash you get from /mu/ when you dislike one of their favourite artists is always hilarious.

it's called personal preference, man. keep on listening to his music, it just doesn't do anything for me. well, most of it doesn't.
>>
>>55297543
Depends which albums you are listening to, I find Structures From Silence and Mystic Chords and Sacred Spaces to be very space ambient, and I think that is the style the poster was talking about when refering to Roach and Schulze
>>
>>55297569
>the backlash you get from /mu/ when you dislike one of their favourite artists is always hilarious.
Yeah you tend to get that when you needless to berate and call them names. You should try to just actually say "It's not my type of music" or otherwise validly criticize it, you'll see how few people care then.

I don't really care either way usually though, but you get what you order.
>>
>>55297611
>>55297569
I don't see anyone complaining when people shit on Bob Marley or Foo Fighters demanding detailed answers..... oh wait, they aren't on the general essentials.
>>
>>55297630
Yeah those bands have considerably less fans here or people who in general listen to them seriously. Makes sense doesn't it? That's why they also aren't on the essentials. There aren't too many people who are interested in having them there. Other than that I don't see your point.
>>
>>55297611
it's baffling to me that in 2015, people still have not understood that every single thing said on boards like /mu/, /tv/, /v/ or /lit/ is an opinion.
>>
>>55297656
>I don't see your point

Your hypocrisy. Why should I justify my opinions on an artist more just because there are more fans of said artist here?
>>
>>55297670
I'm pretty sure they get that, but it's different when you say "X is a meme-artist". You're not just expressing your distaste towards it but actively also insulting the person on the other end saying "fuck you and your shit taste". People going to understandably have a bit different reaction to that than just a simple difference of an opinion. Of course there are people who are offended by that alone and I agree that kind of behavior is close to laughable.

>>55297673
Well then you're completely misunderstanding what I'm saying. I'm not saying you need to justify anything, but it's pretty clear why people are having a certain kind of a response to someone not just disliking an artist, but also receiving an insult towards him or herself too. See the above response in this post too.
>>
>>55297728
>but it's different when you say "X is a meme-artist".

i didn't say that, i said he's shit. i'd understand your reaction if i used that meme artist bullshit.
>>
>>55297738
That is essentially the same though. Honestly it is a subtle difference whether you say "he is" or "I think he is", and in most cases people do mean the latter anyway, but it still reads differently if you even imply it in any sort of objective sense.
>>
>>55297769
>Honestly it is a subtle difference whether you say "he is" or "I think he is", and in most cases people do mean the latter anyway

that's what >>55297670 was all about. there's no need to add "i think" or "just my opinion", it's implied 100% of the time.
>>
>>55297769
If you don't realise by now that all posts on /mu/ are personal opinions then there is no hope for you. You don't need ''IMO'' after every sentence to grasp this.
