Many of Tim Follin's soundtracks are excptional; he's worked on numerous games for C64, NES, SNES, Amiga, and even later consoles (among others). He had a habit of seeking and utilizing absolutely every last bit of sound power out of the console he was working with to make a game's soundtrack into a work that—especially in the case of his C64 works—sounds like it belongs on a platform one generation ahead.
Some of Tim's work demands multiple listens to fully appreciate and enjoy—but if you know anything about the hardware he so often worked with, you may find things to appreciate from the start.

Tim's brother, Geoff Follin, often composed music with Tim or even by himself. The Japanese version of Castlevania III was known as Akumajou Densetsu, and utilized a chip with expanded sound capabilities, which added three channels to the NES/Famicom's five on-board (including DPCM). This was only possible on the Japanese Famicom and not the NES that the rest of the world had seen, as the connections inside of the NES console that were required for any sound chips to work straight from a cartridge were not made between the NES's CPU and the cartridge slot, but instead, they were made to an expansion port on the bottom of the NES that was never used. The Famicom was designed differently, and was able to allow cartridges to contain usable sound expansion chips.
Akumajou Densetsu's soundtrack not only sounds incredible as a result of using the VRC6 for its additional channels, but the compositions are extraordinary! A couple of tracks, including "Clockwork", use no percussion at all, and for the reason that it sounds so archaic and well-structured with no drums at all, Clockwork is probably one of my favorite pieces of music ever written. Quake 3 was a really unique fusion of industrial metal and breakbeat, plus it featured FLA which is cool.
