I like Ride, but they're pretty mid-tier as far as shoegaze bands go. Slowdive's show last year was nothing special, so I'll probably skip this one.

this is a song from the album it connects to, it's a little bit screamy at times but it's really not bad. Otherwise a lot of this shit doesn't really have other bands like them. For example, Candy Claws, Bowery Electric and Xlinsupreme desperately need bands to copy them but they just don't exist or haven't been found.
Looks like I'll be staying up until 2:30 to see the Ride stream

>>55048730

their earliest britpop sound was pretty shoegaze-inspired, too.
>>55048697
Their new album is pretty good though.
>>55048730
in the late 80s/early 90s, blur were more a shoegaze/art punk type band and toured with dinosaur jr., my bloody valentine, and the jesus and mary chain
>>55048865

>>55049106
13 isn't shoegaze or art-punk. And the Rollercoaster tour was in late 1991/1992
>>55049240
Wait, when did I say it was?
>>55049298
You implied it. I said that Blur were more shoegaze and art punk in the late 80s and early 90s and you responded saying that 13 came out in 99.
>>55049328
Someone posted a song from 13, saying he didn't know Blur sounded like that. You responded by telling him about their early work. You should have been telling them about their late 90's output since that's what he was wondering about, and I was telling you that by reminding you what time that album came out.
>>55049453
Ah, I gotcha mate. My bad then. I was just trying to give a bit of shoegaze-related background info about the band.
But yeah, Blur post-1995 goes into some nice weird, noisy, and lo-fi rock territory.
Blur were always a pretty noisy band, it's just mixed real low in the Britpop-era albums. It's still there on the live recordings. "Girls & Boys" guitar work is pretty nuts when you actually listen for it.
>>55050067
Even in their Britpop era, Coxon's guitar work always had a bit of an bit and edge that really separated them from other bands at the time.
But yeah, their live shows (especially the early days) were loud, noisy, and cool as hell.

>>55048637
>>55048683
We should also probably mention that vocals, which is the main reason why Ride is mislabelled Britpop. They didn't have their vocals buried in the mix like other shoegaze bands, and the singers didn't really hide their accents well. But other than that there's really not much comparison to be made, they were introverted as fuck on stage, in the lyrics, and in interviews, completely the opposite of the swaggering Britpop acts that came years later. They were THE archetypical shoegaze act in 1990, it was just about loud guitar noise and being sad, as opposed to trying to score radio hits off sunny, nationalist anthems.
>>55077535
Overall their sound was much less introverted than the other shoegazers. Their drummer had some actual presence on record.
>>55077535
This is true. Here's an example
>They feature a lot of guitars, feedback, melody, and youth
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTLxwXcIJTE
>>55077658
They were comparatively more lively than, say, Slowdive or MBV but other shoegaze bands like Boo Radleys and Adorable were much closer to bridging the gap between shoegaze and Britpop than Ride ever was
>Their drummer has some actual presence on record
So does Chapterhouse's drummer yet they aren't labelled Britpop nearly as often.
>>55077739
This
>>55078025
The Boo Radleys earlier stuff was pretty unique to me, maybe similar to early Moose, they went britpop with their third album, but the britpop scene was already dead at that point
Is brtipop a genre worth digging into?
>>55078102
Oh yeah their first album is a fucking great shoegaze record, but I'm saying as their career progressed you can see them transition from shoegaze to Britpop
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJXPTnPmm78
>>55078104
Not really but there's good singles to be found and a handful of decent albums. Check the link above.
>>55078102
>they went britpop with their third album, but the britpop scene was already dead at that point
actually Giant Steps came out in 1993 right when Oasis was generating hype and Britpop was about to blow up. Britpop didn't really die off for good until 1997 when Oasis released their awkward and ill-considered third album, and Blur started trying to sound American.
>>55078219
>their first album is a fucking great shoegaze record
I meant Everything's Alright Forever, thought that was their debut for some reason.
I come into these threads and drop recs now and then, and usually pick up a rec or two. Much as I love old shoegaze like Lush and Slowdive, I find that most modern shoegaze is noisy before it's beautiful. So I tend to enjoy the dreamier end of the spectrum a lot more, and get turned off if I have to mine through a wall of distortion to find music. Then I heard pic related. I've dodged Candy Claws for years, I think I was just put off by the name, but now I'm working their discography and I'm pretty smitten. I read a comment upthread that there really isn't anything else like them, but I'm hoping anon was just mistaken. Whatcha got, /mu/?

>Asobi Seksu - Citrus
I always get warm-fuzzies when Asobi Seksu is brought up in these threads. I live in a part of the US where bands I enjoy rarely come, but they came through when they were touring for Hush, and it was the first time I'd ever gone to a show and known every song that was played. There were only about 40 people at the show and I could tell half of them didn't know what they were coming to see. I was one of only 6 people who lined up after the show to buy some merch, and I felt so bad about that I bought one of everything on the table. I don't even own a record player, I just gave the vinyls away to people who probably never listened to it. It really demonstrated why it's so rare to see music I like in town. Nevertheless, it was a really saitisfying night for me. The venue was tiny, the music was comfy, the beer was good, and I stood too close to the stage, because everywhere in the bar was too close to the stage. My ears were ringing for days.
Sorry for the blog post. Felt like sharing.
>>55078633
Very much.
>>55078614
Yeah, I've got that. It's a good EP. I didn't make the connection until you posted that, but I can see it. Er, hear it.
I guess this band is dream pop. Never see them talked about here even though they were a pretty important band to the development of shoegazer type stuff

The House of Love are awesome. Might be the 1st time I've ever heard them mentioned here.

Please, dump some charts like this for other genres. Drone/Noise preferrable.

>So does Chapterhouse's drummer yet they aren't labelled Britpop nearly as often.
Chapterhouse is just grunge with reverb.
>>55082228
Is this irony or what
I guess Blood Music was SORT OF grungy but the early stuff was very Cocteau Twins/Stone Roses.

My mind read Catherine Wheel for some reason.

Asoby seksu came to my country 6 years ago, and I should say that I was the only person who lined up to see the performance knowing about how the band sound like, most of the people were especting to find a japanense otaku´s´style band, and I felt ashamed, but at least the came to my country and i got the opportunity to listen Yuki's voice, and the cristal sound of asoby seksu performance.
is there such a thing as black metal mixed with dream pop that isn't blackgaze

lol. We know you're bald mate, there's no shame in it. You were clearly balding 15 years ago, don't try to hide it now.

I think its a return to form, love this guy's stuff

All the shoegazey elements sounded all polished and digital, which I guess can be cool, but I can't say I like any of those sounds more than just thick fuzz. I thought the solo on Your Pain is Mine Now was cool.

It was just a one-off jam session, not like they seriously got back together to write new songs. One listen was more than enough for me and I'm a huge Ride fan.
>>55100304
Yeah, I get that, the EP really blew me away though when I first heard it. I guess I just kind of want it to have more lasting power.
>>55100356
Well maybe they'll decide to record some new songs soon, who knows? Until then we still have "Grasshopper", which is their true improv masterpiece.
>>55070645

I feel like everyone flipped shit and said it's such a new sound but whenever I finally listened to it I was really disappointed. It just sounded real generic.

The first 5 seconds of the track summarize dream pop/shoegaze music for me. In one guitar strum, it is an absolute perfect illustration of the hazy sonic landscape, and the rest of the song is alright. But that first 5 seconds is so simple, yet so brilliant, I don't even like blur all that much. Like tripping or falling into the song, it just epitomizes how I feel when I listen to shoegaze.
