***IF YOU'RE NEW AND WOULD LIKE TO JOIN, READ THIS FIRST!***

It's the 19st of March

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and, ideally, discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily; these people are in it to venture out of their comfort zone by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Jenny Death now

And surprisingly the hype is pretty nicely placed with those one

This is the most stylish swansong that Death Grips could've had, it almost feels like a bit of every album before it charged with this-is-our-final-album combustion and energy. It had some of the catchiest hooks and trippy beats that they've done, and the scatter-force of its composition actually feels, as a combined whole, springy and electric. In fact, it's great stuff, I'll be on the supporting side of this one!

>Death Grips - The Powers That B

You know what this is.

Niggers On The Moon is still the best thing they put out. They pushed the sound as far as they could and the way they used Bjork's vocals was really great.

Jenny Death was more of a familiar Exmilitary-The Money Store era work with small elements from their post-TMS explorations.

I Break Mirrors... is much better on the live performance clip they posted. On the studio version Ride sounds worse.

Inanimate Sensation is one of their best tracks. The vocal delivery is really fucking good as well as the synths all over the track.

Turned Off has a guitar intro but the whole track is basically synths and drums as loud as possible. It's ok. The cigarette lyric had me laughing.

Why A Bitch... had a guitar once again and had similar orientation. The vocals however were treated in a similar way as they were on NOTM, which I prefer.

Pss is funny, pretty sexual lyrically. I enjoyed the quietness and the whisper.

The Powers That B is another hard-hitter and I enjoyed it more than the first time I heard it.

Beyond Alive was kinda boring tbh. Also has a guitar sample. Neat production on this one though.

Centuries Of Damn sounded like something off TMS. Ok track but could be better

On GP is really fucking good. Big fucking star for this track.

DG 2.0 is an instrumental similar to the stuff on FW and is probably a hint that Zach and Andy are going instrumental and Ride will just continue painting.

Really refreshing hip hop from these guys. While it's nothing absolutely mind-blowing, it is really well put-together and the quality is solid on all fronts. I wasn't THAT hyped for JD and it turned out to be something I kinda expected. I really hope their future path (?) will be more in the direction of NOTM.

8/10 (NOTM is a 8+, JD is a 8-)

Best Tracks: Up My Sleeves, Inanimate Sensation, Black Quarterback, On GP.

The Pillows - Runners High (1999)

This album is inconsistent. The first half sounds like members of Green Day and Nirvana were cloned in secret experiments and raised in Japan. On songs like "Paper Triangle" the guitar tone sounds very similar to Kurt Cobain's. The main difference is that The Pillows sound lest angsty and more upbeat. The last half of the album is fairly boring, consisting of power pop ballads. Overall, this felt uninspired and boring. 3/10

Not really into most hip hop actually. Some time ago I explored some stuff on the mucore chart, but very little stayed with me. Today's album is Faith, by The Cure.
I love Pornography. It's one of my favourite albums, an A+. So i was pretty disappointed when i listened to this. This albums is good, the tracks on this album are good, but they are not amazing: there is really nothing that blows my mind, like in Pornography. i'm rating this above average mostly because it evocates a fantastic atmosphere.
>>
>>54432420
>True enough, are you enjoying it?
Yes. Very Scandinavian as expected. Usually folk albums similar to this are a disaster for me because of the vocals but this is pretty decent. Even the lalalas on the second track are nothing I would hate on.

Some pretty comfy tier folk, makes me wish that it was fall since this album seems perfect for that kind of weather. Overall I like the way this sounds and how soft it is to my ears. Would need to go through this album again to understand whats happening lyrically or wouldn't mind having a lyrics sheet next to me. Not that it's hard to understand her or anything, just a need to get more intimate with the album. Also enjoyed the out of place noise rock track at the album, it makes for a surprisingly palate cleaning finisher for the album.

Sure they do, and serve their purpose in some communication. I just don't feel a need to differentiate between them most of the time.

>>54432746
Apart from Lars Hollmer being an accordionist, I'd say folk is not the closest thing I'd associate it. Some melodies seem to be inspired by Swedish traditional music, but there's also influence of oriental music, jazz, some blues, and so on. Much progg in general was inspired by Swedish folk music to some extent.

Well whatever it was the album is still excellent! I will give it another listen before rating it tomorrow because it didn't get my full attention but I really liked it!
Thanks Hampus!

>It's lower than Black Messiah. Even then it's the same score Modern Vampires got.
Oh right, I forgot that even existed. I listened to it and Voodoo and while it's very pleasant and everything I don't see why people were so perplexed by it.

I don't think you're really serious and I believe that this is just a facade so I'm not gonna discuss the current state of this thread. I'm gonna discuss what the fuck I listened to today, because that's why we are here.

First off, Guitar Wolf - Jet Generation. This was super noisey Japanese Garage Punk, and that makes for the music I exactly absolutely despise. This was a terrible listen and that's why I chose to didn't include it on my chart.

What I did include was Daniel Merriweather's Lovage - Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By. Daniel Merriwho? you say? It's actually 2/3rd of Deltron 3030 behind this genius project. The album features vocals by the always versatile Mike Patton and the sexiest female voice since Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval: Elysian Fields' Jennifer Charles. What is the music about? It is a tongue in cheek effort to create the perfect soundtrack for sex. And to be honest, it succeeds. It's a very subtle Trip-Hop/Instrumental Hip-Hop like effort, with the hands of Dan and Kid Koala easily recognizable. The record starts off a bit slow, but at the end the tracks almost magically get you horny as fuck. Even the smoothest motherfuckers who aren't rattled by any porn webm appearing in /b/ will be in shock how quickly their cock could be pumped full with blood. Chicks' pussy lips will get wet and rumor has it that any member of the opposite sex you will play this album for, will be entangled around your Norwegian Wood for at least 24 hours. Use it wisely.

>Field Recordings in Ghana - Drums of Death
>field recordings

Probably the most hype funeral I will ever hear, the drums are hypnotic and very energetic. Their are 7 drummers going at it in this work, five are playing the traditional funeral songs while the remaining two are improvising the beats. Surprisingly feels more like a celebration than a funeral but that's different cultures for you, never the same hang-ups.

Jenny Death is an 8/10 (objectively), 2nd or 3rd favourite DG it seems.

Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters

Get it for Chameleon. The rest is kinda boring but Chameleon is my jam.

The Flaming Lips - Clouds Taste Metallic (1995)

This brought a wave of 90s nostalgia with the final track "Bad Days". My friend used to sing the opening lines all the time, and I never knew where it came from until now.
Apart from that, the album was just ok for me. There are a lot of unique guitar parts for a pop album - it's a lot different from the 3-chord Alt-rock songs that were more popular at the time. However, none of the tracks really stood out for me. It felt like these guys were trying too hard to be quirky. It probably just needs more relistens, but I'm not really keen on reliving the 90s. 5/10

I'mma grab my RYM review to explain:

I have never expected that an album like this still could come out in 2014, in an age where R&B music is now backed by synths and other electronic backings, these instrumental pieces feel like a fresh breath into a new world. I feel like I stepped into the time machine, back to the ancient times when Neo-Soul was THE thing. D'Angelo's voiced hasn't aged at all and possesses the same quality it had back in the days when Voodoo came out (one of the best albums ever made in my opinion), to show how great of an achievement this album is, I could say that it is really close and with multiple listens might even surpass the greatness of Voodoo. D'Angelo's vocal performances are filled with greatness and move along to the progressing instrumental performances which never become stale or boring. This album has been approached in a kind of Jazzy perspective and I always like that in music. Incredible focus has been put into all the small details and when you focus on all the different elements every song have you just realize that everything has been worked out into perfection. There is also a lot of variation on the album. Most songs take on the traditional Neo-Soul sound and structure, but a few exceptions really capture my arousal. 'Prayer' especially, where several layers of rhythm collide with each other and make it a bit confusing what is going on. This song is playing with your perception and makes it incredibly fun to dig deeper into it.

It's basicly revolutionarizing different genres related to Soul and even now I discover new pieces and things while listening to it.

You know the world is fucked when that Kendrick Lamar album is charted above Donuts. It hurts my heart.
>>
>>54436001
shut up hip hop elitist
Donuts is great and so is TPAB. Fucking review it if you're gonna talk shit, especially with a taste as bad as yours
>>
>>54436120
I already 'fucking reviewed' it in Dutch a few days ago, but I was too tired to translate all of it. But for saltisized people like you, here it is, it's a pure translation of what I made in the middle of the night when I just finished the album:

I think it's disappointing, it's just not coherent. Well coherent isn't the right word but I'm missing a lot in the music. What I mean is, the message is beautiful and great and stuff, but speaking musically, it just isn't really impressive. When an album needs to plagiarize not ONE, but TWO songs on one album, you know something is wrong with the artistical integrity and furthermore with the creativity, it's just not able to keep me engaged for more than a few songs. Kendrick just isn't an interesting MC, he can't hold his own on a track. It doesn't help that his voice is the most annoying since Bushwick Bill. The music suffers because of the overall concept and the story. It's just like a game you're playing because of the good story, but has a sucky gameplay. It is really annoying to hear those same sentences and parts of text over and over and over again on an album. This significantly hurts the replay value of an album. The production is hot though, if Pilot Talk 3 would have this production I would be happy. Fucking Thundercat and George Clinton on one song? Funkman's dream. Kendrick's voices are annoying and so is his preachy attitude. The overuse of the word nigger is really bothering me, while it hasn't earlier in ten years of listening Hip-Hop, because the use here comes over to me as very hateful towards us white boys, furthermore it expands on the annoying trend of making albums too long and some of those monotone tracks from the middle part could have easily been cut. (1/I don't know)
>>
>>54436592
I Think GKMC is even better than this album, but I'm probably alone on this. But yeah, you know what it is with Kendrick's fanbase. They are worse than the average anime fan fic guy. If Kendrick would've shat on a record it would've still charted this high. Furthermore people are saying this album is Funky and Jazzy? I don't really hear it, except for the Thundercat tracks (If you can make a Thundercat track not-funky, you should form a Beach Boys cover band for being the whitest person on earth)

People like to compare this to Black Messiah? Nah son, nah son. Black Messiah is a once in a lifetime type of album. It's revolutionary in every part, the Kendrick record is a decent effort, but lacking in many parts, mostly lyrically, almost all lacking points are due to Kendrick not being a top 50 MC or something. Compare him with the all time greats like everybody has been doing, he isn't close.

And while we're already comparing this to everything. Let's take last year's best Hip-Hop records. First of all there's Black Milk, who brought out an album that's not only better produced (it sounds much more organic, like you could actually play this live), but Black Milk isn't doing all his annoying voices everywhere and comes up with some very interesting musical components, but he stays focused on the music itself and that is what matters. You ain't making a fucking documentary, you're making an album. Then, Piñata. Gibbs is miles ahead of Kendrick, especially when it comes down to flow. Gibbs is the most versatile flower in the game right now. Madlib didn't adjust a lot to the samples, just like Kendrick on his album, but at least his samples aren't so well known, so it doesn't hinder your listening experience. The only thing that holds Pinata back are some god awful features, but they are there too on the Kendrick album (I see you Snoop Dogg). (2/3)
>>
>>54436821
Then RTJ, I'm not really a fan of El-P's production mostly. But goddamn it, this shit bangs. And Killer Mike is the best rapper active right now, I said it. That's actually something Kendrick and I agree on. Killer Mike could rap circles around half the game nowadays and seriously, everybody knows it.

Then I even would like to compare Lupe Fiasco to Kendrick. Lupe has been a disappointment for almost a decade and his new album is no exception. But god fucking damn it, Mural is one of the greatest tracks of 21st century Hip-Hop. The average human brain is not designed to grasp what he's saying, that is freaking awesome. THAT is revolutionarizing the game, even when the rest of the album is Lupe searching for himself and not really succesfully doing all the wrong things you can do with an album.

So anon, you probably won't read all of this shit, and fuck you for bringing out the worst in me and voiding 20 minutes of my spare time, but at least I can relate to this when I tell again that I'm disappointed with the current state of affairs in the Hip-Hop genre.

the week I out myself as a certified plebeian pissbaby

>Merriweather Post Pavilion
I like it. This is a good place to jump into a flowchart from, it feels very varied, there's something for everyone and sadly that means some tracks aren't for me.

>Loveless
It's bland. The overdriven (???) guitars get a bit annoying, the vocals get lost in the music.

>F#A#infinity
Really good. There's that warm spoken-word stuff that I adore, and solid instrumentals that are very well defined. Contender for AOTM.

>Spiderland
Basically the same critique as Loveless, but less so. I just don't find it interesting.
>>

I absolutely feel like I'm not being fair to them or putting enough thought into rating them, yeah. I'll probably do a week of re-listens next month, or whenever I get the time, got holidays coming up so I should be able to focus on the music.
>>
>>54437724

>Tindersticks - Tindersticks II

I find myself in a similar situation as yesterday.
The music is inoffensive and didn't leave a huge impression on me that warrants a higher rating.
I'm not sure if I'm going to want to return to this album as quickly as some of the other albums on this chart.
I do have to praise its consistency, the perfect baritone lead vocals (eat your heart out The National), its lighthearted orchestra/lounge jazz atmosphere, and its lyrics.
It's a lengthy listen that isn't exactly rewarding, but regardless I don't regret having spent time with it.
