Now that I have listened to the whole thing.. yeah, this isn't very good. There are a couple decent tracks but the midi horns and fanfare shit gets old very fast. Most of the tracks sound the same.

I went into this with an open mind but this really does sound like a bit of a joke.

This is probably the worst album I've listened to in a long time and I'm a huge fan of Black Metal and Witch House.

Holy fuck, it was so pretentious and hilariously bad, the second hand embarrassment made me quit after a few tracks. This is such an abysmal garbage I still can't quite fathom it.

ITT: People not into the avantgarde.

Let me throw up a quote for you guys:

>A 1973 performance of Four Organs at Carnegie Hall in New York City nearly caused a riot, with "yells for the music to stop, mixed with applause to hasten the end of the piece."[5] One of the performers, Michael Tilson Thomas, recalls: "One woman walked down the aisle and repeatedly banged her head on the front of the stage, wailing 'Stop, stop, I confess.'"

And here is John Cage performing a composition on TV.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSulycqZH-U

The reason HHH says "reception is part of the Ark Work" is because it is proof of its true quality, it is true forward-thinking.

This album IS Trout Mask Replica. It IS the true separator between lovers of music and the immature listeners.

Nothing, I fucking love Emperor.
The problem on this album is the arrangements are rather thin, and the overly dry and clinical mix really accentuates how cheap/tacky the orchestral timbres are. It's intended to sound grand or "transcendental", yet the only atmosphere it evokes here is an atmosphere of Fruity Loops.

Please don't compare this mess with Steve Reich.
Reich actually had interesting musical ideas to contribute beyond extended philosophical diatribes, and they had a profound influence on both popular and art music.

Because you rush to his defense so swiftly, as if you care about him a great deal, instead of just another large icon in the broad history of music.
If you cared about more composers (more non-Minimalists) you wouldn't be so protective of people quoting and comparing him, since you have less value for him specifically and more across the Canon of music as a whole.

That being said, my comment was purely about new ideas being shut out by an ignorant masses. Which makes the comparisons perfectly accurate.

>>
>>53768811
It's really not. Maybe it's overly verbose but the ideas in it aren't "wrong" because all he's doing is describing his observations. If you don't get it try reading it again without bias.
>>
>>53768915
it probably just didn't "click" for you yet
>>
>>53768792
>If you cared about more composers (more non-Minimalists) you wouldn't be so protective of people quoting and comparing him
That's rather presumptuous of you. An important work shouldn't be considered less valuable simply because you can namedrop more composers. And even if someone does appreciate the entire Canon of music equally, that doesn't effect the quality of a single work. All it effects is context, and a piece of music should be judged on its own merits.

I agree that it should be judged on its merits, and The Ark Work is just as meritorious as TMR. The collision of rhythms, the enjoyment of the individual pieces combining to form a massive whole...but The Ark Work also has many notes of inspired composition. Some of the tracks here feel like developed Post-Rock works rather than Black Metal stagnancy. Just listen to something like Kel Valhaal for the remarkable discordance of vocals with horns with guitars.
I need to listen to this album, because it is truly a great work to take in.
And I think you need to listen to more music, and mature more. I used to be like you: thinking the avantgarde wasn't worth it. You'll grow up some day.
>>
>>53768082
I don΄t know about transcendental black metal, but seeing the albums there it seems HHH has done his study on black metal.
>>
>>53769047
I think it's easy to think that aventgarde isn't worth while because most of it is shit. It's wanky and lifeless but people jizz about how technical or musically impressive it is. But there are definitely worth while aventgarde records, The Art Work seems to be one of them.
>>
>>53768944
i'm not saying it's wrong, it's just an attempt at overintellectualizing ones own music and it comes off ridiculous, to have the audacity to publish something like that, and describe your music as "transcedental", "a final nihilism" makes you a tool
>>
>>53769047
>The Ark Work also has many notes of inspired composition
All HHH wanted to do was meme and you got meme'd alright
>>
>>53769047
Frankly I think the Arc Work is incredibly tame compared to either TMR or Four Organs for that matter . It doesn't really defy traditional musical convention or structure in the same way as those did. It's still rock album at heart, and all it's particularly notable for is using elements of electronic music and post-rock in a black metal context, neither of which are even new ideas. I've yet to hear any convincing arguments as to why this album should be considered musically "innovative".

>And I think you need to listen to more music, and mature more. I used to be like you: thinking the avantgarde wasn't worth it. You'll grow up some day
When did I say the avantgarde wasn't worth it? Again, you're being incredibly presumptuous here.

Transcendental Black Metal: another name for experimental rock.
