pic related is the best film i've seen so far, but Ingmar Bergman's "Persona", Hiroshi Teshigahara's "Suna no onna" and Victor Erice's "The Spirit of the Beehive" come close.
Tarkovsky's poetry with Stalker went far beyond moving pictures and sound to inquire into both the human existence and the purpose of movies itself, with some of the most breathtaking scenarios i've ever seen and some of the greatest exchanges of dialogues you could possibly find in storytelling.

Good to know that /mu/ acts like pretentious faggots about all art and not just their "superior" taste in music.

Really? Tarkovsky made your FAVORITE movie? Really? Mirror is beautiful, possibly the closest thing to poetry on screen. Andrei Rublev is a tremendous film. But that's what you put on after a hard day at work?

Resnais? You want to study film form to relax?

I'm earning my PhD in Cinema/Media Studies and I'll be the first to tell you that a great film doesn't necessarily mean it should register as being a favorite.

When I want to watch a movie for the sake of it, I'll go with Star Wars for the 5,000th time before I turn to watching Persona again. Give me Indiana Jones before Haeneke. I'd rather watch Keaton than King Vidor.

Who the fuck are you trying to impress, /mu/? This board is essentially strangers on the internet and even then you can't shake off acting like a know-it-all dickhead.

Lawrence of Arabia I can understand. It straddles that line between art and entertainment perfectly. At the very least it has enough of a narrative structure that you can jump in anywhere, after having seen the film, and enjoy the experience.

I'm talking about some of the more abstract choices here which are obviously only posted as an act of impressing others with the supposed depth of taste these faggots believe they have.

David Lean fucking rules, but I wish his films weren't so loooooong.

You're right, there's no humanity in Lawrence, Zhivago, and River Kwai. None whatsoever.

The beauty of those movies is that they perfectly combine spectacle (some of the best ever put onscreen) with compelling human stories placed within even more compelling historical contexts. Brief Encounter is a glorified date movie which only receives the praise it gets from academics and critics because of the greater films that Lean went on to make and because it used flashback effectively (though other films had achieved this earlier).

You're both saying that liking both art and "entertainment" films is perfectly valid. I agree and that's fine to say, but my original point was against people who dismiss anyone who's really into art films as having superficial taste. Tell me, when do you decide someone is just liking art films to seem cool or whatever? How many of their top 10 need to be art films?

The thing is, you're saying it's only a problem when someone dismisses non-art filmss as universally garbage. That's bullshit. That's such a small percentage of cinema fans compared to how many you fans call pretentious even when they say nothing to disparage non-art films in the first place. They like Bunuel or skmething and that's enough

I guess I haven't made myself clear then. I'm saying that you _in general_ shouldn't disregard either type of films. Now, as for me, I like Eraserhead a lot, Stalker has a similar feel to me but also totally different, both have god-tier sound editing, by the way.

I also like Monthy Pyton a lot, especially Life Of Brian, the Coen brothers, Jim Jarmusch (that is from Down By Law to Only Lovers Left Alive)

THIS.
Solaris is one of the best films I've ever seen, man, but I hate the part when the man is on the highway, I mean, I understand that it represents the transition between two worlds but
Tarkovsky made it TOO FUCKING LONG.

>>53727201

>Am I the only one who liked White over Red and Blue?
probably not, but I'm curious as to why, I thought it was not nearly as good as the other two. Red is my favorite.

Yus. The tunnel scene in Stalker is lent the most oppressively eerie atmosphere because of the sound design, amazing stuff.

Top 10 as of 31/01/2015 (not in a paticular order) (viewed since January 10, 2014)
-Nashville (Altman, 1975)
-The Red Shoes (Powell & Pressburger, 1948)
-City Lights (Chaplin, 1931)
-Vertigo (Hitchcock, 1958)
-The Night Of The Hunter (Laughton, 1955)
-The Battle Of Algiers (Pontecorvo, 1966)
-Alien (Scott, 1979)
-Paris, Texas (Wenders, 1984)
-Sunrise (Murnau, 1927)
-Ferris Bueller's Day Off (Hughes, 1986)

I don't know, White got me because it was poignant and I sort of enjoyed the feel it gave. I found Red to be too happy (even though it gave a nice closure to it) and Blue was sort of too sad. I'm not sure I really explain myself, I just liked the main character a lot and I watched it a long time ago anyway. Might re-watch them anytime soon.

I do not get the love for Solaris. I found it had a ton of wasted potential in exploring the themes it set up, and the "romance" was the weakest writing I have seen in his films. It got caught-up in the scientific exposition when it would have worked so much better as mysterious, with the ocean feeling like a powerful, inescapable, illogical entity. It's probably just about tied for my least favorite of his, maybe just above Ivan's Childhood.

Definitely, by far
I mean, Eraserhead is amazing in its own way, but Mulholland Drive just does it for me. If you forced me at gunpoint to pick just one of those three to declare my #1 of all time, I think Mulholland would be it.
>Would you still choose it if Twin Peaks was eligible?
I feel like this is a massive faux pas for someone who'd consider himself a Lynch fan, but I've never watched Twin Peaks
So I can't say

Also, Blue will always be my favourite of the Three Colours, but I can definitely understand White being your favourite. There's something beautifully endearing about the light-hearted and innocent tone that the film represents
