you'd be more likely to pronounce コンビニ as "combini" versus "conbini" due to the hard "bi", so i guess maybe that carries over. it's kind of like how to sometimes see people write 先輩 as "sempai" rather than the "senpai" you might know from all the memery.
any-non-latin-language -> english romanizations are never trustworthy when it comes to pronunciations.
