Steven Wilson is the most underrated artist of the last 20 years imo

ignored by plebs
ignored by "indie" plebs who only listen to funeral
hated by "patricians" because it's "indie shite"
>>
>>53392475
Really, Arcade Fire? This is popular as fuck. Way to miss the spirit of the thread.
>>
>>53392437
I like him but he is definitely not underrated.
>>
>>53392509

I see you're "the patrician" guy

:^)
>>
literally who
>>
>>53392363
Agree, his best solo album IMO, shame it was overshadowed by Deathconsciousness who did similar stuff, but it dragged on too much.

>>53392475
No
>>
>>53392514
He's not as well known as he should be.
>>
>>53392526
I liked raven more
>>
>>53392517
>posts a /mu/core band

>>
>>53392534
Maybe not as a solo artist but he is pretty well known as the frontman of porcupine tree.
>>
>>53392551
>Is this the most underrated album in the last decade?
>focusing on the band

X____D
>>
>>53392526
How is it anything like deathconsciousness?
>>
>>53392537
Raven is most cohesive, but he went a bit too far with 70's influences there

>>53392567
Similar combination of post-punk, drone, shoegaze and post-rock
>>
Tbh it's my least favourite album of his. Those shoegaze stylings just don't sit right with me.
>>
>>53392565
Neon Bible is pretty accurately rated. The book is better tbh
>>
>>53392586
Barely even Shoegaze. More drone, trip hop influences than shoegaze.

I feel I'm the only one who prefers Mariusz Duda's solo work over Steven Wilson
>>
>>53392475
literally the most popular rock band of the 2000s
>>53392363
I don't enjoy Porcupine Tree but his solo stuff is pretty good
>>
>>53392619
stop the b8s guys, or just read OP
>>
>>53392615
They're completely different styles of music though. Latest Lunatic Soul album was god-tier.
>>
>>53392632
Yes, but Riverside and PT are often regarded as the best modern prog bands. And last LS album was great, my AOTY probably.

Duda and Wilson even did a song together for cancer cure recently.
>>
>>53392584
That was the point though. He wanted to make a vintage record. Raven is a tribute to the classic prog albums of the early 70s.
>>
>>53392534
He's the most well known artist in the prog rock scene
>>53392437
Every work he's put out is critically acclaimed.
What are you even talking about
>>
>>53392664
I know, I'm glad he is going to modern sound with HCE but I haven't been a huge fan of the first 2 tracks he released so far.
>>
>>53392651
Yeah, I heard that song. I think the best PT song is better than the best Riverside song. e.g. put Anaesthetise against Second Life Syndrome, the former wins out.
>>
>>53392695
The two songs released so far will be better in the context of the album.
>>
>>53392534
>>53392437
>>53392678
i would say he's a bit overrated in prog circles and pretty underrated everywhere else.
>>
>>53392678
>He's the most well known artist in the prog rock scene

Should be even more popular, especially with all his pop songs.
>>
>>53392695
Me neither but I still have my hopes up. I'm excited about the 10+ minutes tracks.
>>
>>53392701
The best PT song is Buying New Soul though.

>>53392695
I haven't heard the 2nd song yet, but the title track was one of the most disappointing things I"ve heard this year.
>>
>>53392715
Probably so, it's a concept album like most SW albums. Still, they sound a bit... flat.
>>

>>53392746
>Buying New Soul
Not even close to me
>>
>>53392746
Best PT song is either Buying New Soul, Arriving Somewhere or Anaesthetise. Can't really decide.
>>
>>53392732
>>53392719
He doesn't make any intriguing "pop" music. Even what he puts out today sounds outdated. Its impossible for him to be more popular outside the prog circles.
>>
>>53392701
>>53392787
>Arriving Somewhere or Anaesthetize
I think almost every PT fan considers these and Trains the best PT songs

My 3rd favourite would be full version of Even Less or Dark Matter
>>
SW is probably my favourite artist. He can be pretty divisive, I think because fans can be very hyperbolic about how good he is. I will say he has a very good ear for melody and has managed to keep putting out good music for ~25 years now, which is impressive to say the least.

He's also a great producer and I love his work with Opeth (older albums) and on remixing classic prog albums.

I don't think he "needs" to be more popular though, his audience is pretty well established. He had the option to go bigger, PT were still gaining traction when he split them up but he recognized they were getting stale with The Incident so he stopped. I respect that.

Apparently he's big in Israel, he was on a chat show there https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1FTfWc4pwU Pretty weird to think of him as a celebrity.
>>
My top 3 PT songs are Trains, Lips of ashes, Way out of here
>>
>>53392812
Trains is nowhere near their best song. Never understood the hype for that song.
>>
les do this, post em:

>Favourite Porcupine Tree songs
Buying New Soul
Tinto Brass
Mellotron Scratch

Wedding Nails
Moonloop

>Favourite Steven Wilson songs
Sectarian
Drive Home
Index
Raider II
Remainder the black dog
The Holy Drinker
>>
>>53392822
>Apparently he's big in Israel
Since he was making music with that talentless kike? Funny how Blackfield went to shit when he left the band.
>>
>>53392834
Lips of Ashes--that is a great song. What the fuck are those weird noises in that song?
>>
>>53392857
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmcMWYYwlQI
>>
>>53392853
Well I wouldn't put any of these PT songs in my top 10

Best SW songs
Significant Other
Collecting Space
Deform to Form a Star
Raider II
The Holy Drinker
The Raven that Refused to Sing
>>
A rough top 10:

Stop Swimming
Drown with Me
Trains
Chloroform
Anesthetize
Arriving Somewhere
Even Less
What Happens Now?
Stars Die
Waiting

That was difficult. I can't decide whether I like the poppier side or the proggier side of his songwriting. Coma Divine is their best live album though, so good.
>>
>>53392853
>PT songs
Arriving Somewhere
Collapse the Light into Earth
.3
Fadeaway
Sever

>Wilson
Insurgentes
The Watchmaker
Deform to Form a Star
Veneno Para Las Hadas
Like Dust I have Cleared From My eyes

Shit artist, really

It was worse than the Suburbs. The Suburbs was underrated and poorly received even though it's their best

Dude that album won the grammys and blew AF into top spot among indie rock bands
>>
>>53392922
Halo is a jam, what gives.

>Access Denied
I fucking hate how this cuts in after Buying New Soul. He's usually good at sequencing his albums, the fuck is that about?
>>
>>53392921
XD
>>
>>53392906
Poppy, proggy, it's all good. I think a lot of people misunderstand PT. They intentionally go between ambitious music and pop, and many prog fans think they're hacks because of this. PT was never trying to be "pure" prog.
>>
>>53392922
>Jupiter Island
>Not one of the best PT songs

What the fuck is wrong with you?
>>
>>53392913

ok?
>>
>>53392946
Wilson is a very diverse artist, the fact that he mixes so many styles is why I consider him the best modern prog artist
>>
>>53392922
Access Denied is so bad holy shit. Weird how it shares disc space with such gems as Buying New Soul and Disappear.

>>53392939
Halo is easy to hate because of the lyrics. It's an alright song though, good to exercise to. Same thing with Shallow.

Eh, fair enough. Wilson's lyrics in general can very hit or miss.
>>
>>53392962
I was being sarcastic about the "shit artist" thing. I love Steven Wilson.
>>
>>53392990
Not as good though.
>>
>>53393061
True I guess, I know FOABP lyrics are also easy target, but for me these lyrics feel honest despite being written by 40 year old.
>>
One thing I find weird about Wilson and Porcupine Tree is how they are extremely popular in prog rock communities and barely talked about anywhere else, like, Pitchfork, NME and Rolling Stone have almost nothing on them. I used to think they were fairly obscure band some years ago because they had no YT video with over million views and the fact they didn't even crack into UK top 40 until Fear of a Blank Planet, Wilson still didn't even manage to get into top 20.
Also weird how they have over 60 million scrobbles on last.fm yet only 700 000 listeners which makes almost 90 scrobbles per listener.
>>
>>53393180
That doesn't surprise me at all. I listen to PT all the time.

I don't have last.fm but considering I listened every release of theirs at least 10 times I would have about 2000.

They are known by having very loyal cult-like fanbase

>>
>>53393302
not in the mainstream ;^)
>>
>>53392922
this list is sorely missing the title track from FOABP
>>
>>53393451
FOABP is dope as fuck, excluding the lyrics
>that hook into chorus
>that calm part leading into heavy guitar riff
>>
>>53393451
But it's a really good track instrumentally, it's just the lyrics. Everyone's too hung up on 'xbox is a god to me kek'. We get it, it's lame.
>>
>>53393475
>>53393487
Musically it's pretty by-the-numbers.

FOABP in general isn't really anything special beyond certain melodies and textures. I'll take The Incident any day - it has something FOABP could certainly use more of: good songs.
>>
>>53393549
I thought everyone agreed Incident was Wilson's poor attempt to make FOABP again
>>
>>53393576
It's the superior version of FOABP - not my fault that i'm the only one who sees that.

There is no track on FOABP as good as any of the following:
>Time Flies
>I Drive the Hearse
>Black Dahlia

I'll take the bit of filler scattered throughout it (Drawing the Line, Circle of Manias, two of the same interlude) if it means having songs as good as those.

Demians are the most underrated prog band of the last decade

Shame the last album was mediocre
>>
>>53392363
It has a cult so hardly underrated, but I'm sure there are very many people who could love it but write him off as being "prog fedora shit". That album has more in common with Deathconsciousness than Close to the Edge

>>53392437
He's my favourite artist and that's completely not true
>>
>>53393601
Literally what

The Incident is good man, I'll give you that, but stand it next to Fear of a Blank Planet it's utter shit. I think that's why so many people hated it, because it was weak in comparison, and brought nothing new to the table.

Every track on FOABP is better than the three you listed.
>>
>>53395866
>That album has more in common with Deathconsciousness than Close to the Edge
This is so on point. It's weird how certain artists get their reputation tarnished by association with a certain scene or movement. I don't wonder that he'd get less hate if p4k were churning out gushing reviews of his shit on the regular.
>>
>>53392853
>Fear of a Blank Planet
>Anesthetise
>Arriving Somewhere
>So Called Friend
>Start of Something Beautiful
Honestly I could just put all of FOABP but that's a boring choice

>Harmony Korine (eternal GOAT)
~power gap~
>Deform to Form a Star
>The Watchmaker
>Get all you Deserve
>The Pin Drop
>Insurgentes
>>
>>53395952
It's not that he gets hate really, it's just a lot of people miss out. So many people judge him off one album (used to be In Absentia, now its Raven) and assume that's all he's done, because that's how it is for most artists.

Really wish he did more with the Insurgentes style, but I understand that he was quite depressed at the time and doesn't really want to go back to it.
