/mu/ we need to have a talk. Why in the lord's name is Unwound, arguably one of the most important bands of the 90's, not talked about here? They revolutionized what post-hardcore meant, by experimenting and setting a new standard for the sub-genre. It wasn't just about angst, they expanded past the roots of hardcore punk with their own brand of brainy punk rock. All of their albums are a testament to what they have done to rock, pop, punk and the avant-garde. So once again, why isn't this band talked about more? Is it simply because a lot of people do not know about them and they're underrated? that should definitely change, and there should be a guide to ease in new fans.

if this thread gets going, i might take the liberty to make such a list / chart.

unwound is mentioned pretty frequently

you must be new here
>>
>>53338755
no, i've been here for over a year. I barely seem them brought up. and on top of that, i would like to see them get more recognition at the very least.
>>
>>53338755
They're mentioned often here. Not anywhere else.
>>
Everywhere else they're pretty underrated, but here on /mu/ they've been gaining tons of popularity this past year, mostly thanks to tripfags like Drop and Xusosis.
>>
>>53338730
>Unwound

>>
>>53338815
>>53338785

hmm i'll definitely agree i do not see them mentioned anywhere else but here. I still do not seem them discussed here too often.
>>
I've just started getting into Unwound, but I love them already

Fake Train and Leaves Turn Inside You are my favorites

>i've been here for over a year

so you're new here?

fuck off faggot, we all know who unwound is

the only reason people don't discuss them as much is because their last album was over 10 years ago
>>
>>53338858
no need to be so upset. i'm just asking a question. i love how you take pride in how long you've been on a meme board. but i'd be lying it's not all bad since i browse, too, obviously. there are good threads and i was hoping to get some discussion rolling w.o. the use of buzzwords and pejoratives. kindly go back to /b/ if you're not going to refrain from the cancer of meming

>their last was over 10 years ago
true

but then again, a lot of popular bands that are discussed here that are not widely known outside this site and have not dropped relevant material are talked way more than unwound.
>>
>>53338977
how the fuck am i memeing?

you're obviously new here if you've never seen unwound discussed

fuck off
>>
Unwound = Sonic Youth + Fugazi = wow so innovative
>>
>>53339164
why are you insisting i f off. i'm asking a question. is that such a crime. and you are meming.

you're using buzzwords
>faggot
you used an anime pic. and you keep tell me to fuck off.

stop meming friend.
>>
>>53339201
that's the general idea, but you're not giving them an earnest chance if that's all you're expecting going into them. They crafted their own sound. Those are their influences, sure, but Fugazi and Sonic Youth had theirs, too.
>>
>>53339213
this is an imageboard steeped in japanese culture

terms like faggot are commonplace

you don't belong here

go back to reddit
>>
>>53339201
you don't have nearly as much of a point as you think you do, half-wit.
>>
>>53339265
>go back to reddit
there you are meming again

>terms like faggot are common place
that still doesn't mean they're excusable

i don't browse reddit, that place is awful because of its hive-mind mentality and points system. Now stop projecting. Either you fuck off with your attitude and leave this thread, or contribute something worth-while about the topic in hand.
>>
>>53339337
>memeing

that is literally a meme

stop memeing you hypocrite
>>
I'm actually just getting into Unwound as we speak. I've heard Repetition and right now I'm listening to New Plastic Ideas. Pretty good so far.

I do have to say that although I don't see Unwound directly discussed often here, I do see their albums in just about every 3x3/4x4/5x5 thread. Plus at least one of their albums is included in several different essentials charts (noise rock being one) among being mentioned in other threads.

Mostly, I think the people who would talk about Unwound are too busy talking about Slint or Big Black or something.
>>
>>53339356
i'm just pointing out your behavior. I'm not using memes as my argument here.
>>
>>53339408
different guy. You're not making anything better by feeding the troll. Your best bet is to just ignore him.
>>
>>53339398
Yea, you're right. They're mentioned subtlety. >>53338977
like I said here, a lot of artists that have not put out recent music are still discussed quite often here. Namely NMH and Slint. And I like both those artists, especially Slint. Maybe they're starting to catch on more.
>>
>>53339463
True. I guess he got the best out of me which was just a couple of responses out of me.

I've heard them mentioned fairly often.

I'm still wondering why I'm the only one mentioning Penfold/The Moirai

I wasn't able to get into Unwound too easily though... Should I just start chronologically? Any specific songs I could just jump into to get a headstart, instead of albums?

Swan
Fake Train
>>
>>53338730

>Why in the lord's name is Unwound, arguably one of the most important bands of the 90's, not talked about here?

Um, probably because they were overshadowed by better bands like Pavement, MBV, Fugazi, and Ride.
>>
>>53339959
>Ride
interesting, explain more
>>
>>53339909
If you're a fan of noise rock, start with Fake Train and New Plastic Ideas

If you want a good starting point into unwounds' discography, Repetition is a great spot. Its their fourth (5th) album. It's their most accessible. If you're a fan of post-rock, their last two, Challenge For a Civilized Society and Leaves Turn Inside You are great albums

>>53339910
definitely agree with Swan being one of their best. I've noticed with each album of theirs, they always have one 7+ minute song that stands out as a highlight among highlights

Fake Train its Valentine Card trilogy

New Plastic Ideas it's Abstraktions, which is my favorite btw

The Future of What is Swan

Repetition doesn't really have one. Maybe Lady Elect?

Challenge For a Civilized Society it's Side Effects of Being Tired

and Leaves, Terminus. Probably their best.
>>
>>53339959

lol nah
MBV and Fugazi are arguable

nah

Same guy here:

>>53339979
>>53340035

When Unwound was starting to release albums, they were at the tail end of grunge like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, etc. In England, MBV, Ride, and other shoegaze bands were huge. Then by the mid 90's brit pop and pop punk like green day was getting big. People weren't into bands like Unwound anymore simply because other similar bands came before. Critics were focusing their reviews elsewhere. Unwound isn't bad, just a little late to the party.
>>
>>53340107
that explains why they're not popular which is what I asked, so good answer i agree. but their first album, fake train was that tail end of the "grunge" sound. They expanded on that. But I guess at that point most critics and people did not seem to care since they already "got" their chance.
>>
>>53339871
I don't have a favorite song yet, but New Plastic Ideas struck a chord with me
>>
>>53340128
They were just another part of the 90's underground like the Jesus Lizard and Shellac.
>>
>>53340170
those bands are goat, too. but i always liked unwound for their charisma. just judging from their live videos, they were one heck of a live band. I like how they play at all age shows, too.
>>
What the fuck is going on in this thread?

When people look back on 2014/2015 will they appreciate rock records the same way we appreciate Unwound? Or will it be a vintage act kind of thing the way we like jazz?
>>
>>53340262
idk about jazz being vintage. some of it, sure. And it depends on how people of today are influenced by unwound. they've gained more popularity recently. I think i recall like 2-3 years ago unwound had like only 60,000 listeners on last.fm and they're closing in on 100,000 now. Either more people are using last.fm, or unwound is getting more popular. It could be a combination of the two.

>>53340232
i have not listened to survival knife. where to start? I assume they don't have much material just by a quick search. I know Jusitn leads that band, but I have not bothered yet. Is it worth it?
>>
>>53340304
I know they only have one album. It think some non-album singles might exist too. Brandt Sandeno is also in it. It's definitely worth checking out.
