I'm currently having some problems with ableton and was wondering if someone could help me out

I've been using this free pulse modulator VST and it's totally awesome except today I can't hear the effect anymore through the monitors unless it's recording. Nothing is different except I added an audio interface that my headphones are now plugged into instead of going straight into my computer lie before. It's really bugging me and I can't tell what's going on, can anyone help?
>>

I think ASIO, when I bought my focusrite scarlett it gave me a link and I downloaded it from their website
>>
>>53007922
You said you can't hear it through the monitors unless its recording.

Can you hear it through the headphones without recording?
Do other tracks without the effect play fine?
Does the timeline have to be playing for the effect to work?
>>
>>53008053
can't hear it through headphones, other tracks without the effect play fine. it's not even like i can't hear this track with the effect on it, and i can even tell a difference when the effect is on or off, but it just doesn't sound at all like it does when recording is enabled

i am almost positive this effect worked without the timeline playing before, but maybe not
>>
>>53007547
Shot you an email, man.
>>
>>53008136
but it does work when i just let the timeline run. is it common for effects not to work right unless the timeline is running?

pretty stale, could use more background sound and treble in your sample choices

But in all honesty this idea could go somewhere if it was given a sonic makeover
>>
>>53008183
Yeah some effects do this. If you other tracks are playing fine, then its probably not a driver or interface issue but an issue with the effect itself.

Sometimes you have to start the timeline on an even bar, not just anywhere, for these midi synced effects to sound right.

What you could do is make a new audio track and set the input of that track to be the other track with the effect on it. And then hit record and see if you can get it to sound the way it's supposed to sound. Then you have an audio file of the proper sound effect, though you cant really tweak it the same.

What headphones do all you guys use? For the longest time I've been stuck with some $20 Sony earbuds and I've never had any complaints.

Just wondering if there is something out there that producers hail as being really great.

according to the "mixing secrets for the small studio" book you dont get much more quality when you buy the most expensive headphones, and all you need is a decent pair and you're fine.

I use AKG K-44 or K-55s, they're comfy as fuck for long periods and fairly cheap. been using them for years.

Recorded some vocal parts for a /mu/tant collaboration today. should be a nice track

My music is usually experimental ambient shit but I love making dance music.

Bootleg of Break Da Law 95 by Three 6 Mafia

>>

>>53008765
any other methods? I'm not trying to use an effect, but I will. I would just like to have sounds be really wide, how do sounds get like that anyway?
>>
>>53009154
6th chords, major 7ths as well. mixolydian using the V chord pretty well so that it doesn't sound too much like a V chord but still gives off the V vibe. i like disco and funk as well, but i haven't gone too in depth with it.

also i think there might be a use of 4ths and 11ths on chords a good bit, but subtle. this may be more jazz fusion though, especially chord progs sounding like they go up in 4ths.
>>

what does /prod/ think of these speakers i picked up today? is 50 watt amp my best choice or should i go high/lower
>>
>>53009547
fuck you
>>
>>53009386
Duplicate a track, delay it by 15 or more milliseconds, apply very small amount of pitch modulation, sine wave or random, maybe on both tracks if its not too noticeable. Pan first track to one side and duplicate track to the other side. That's a pretty basic way to do it.
>>
>>53009443
those speakers are fine man! generally you should go higher than 50-watt, but the trick is to make sure the amp is rated 50-watt continuous (NOT 50W peak!). As a general rule it's good to have an amp that runs 2x (or more) power than your speakers want. this allows you to get clean optimal audio out of it without stressing it. this also means you can blow the speakers if you crank it all the way up, but that's always true.

i would look for a 100W (continuous, per channel, into 6Ω) amp, or maybe if you find one that only publishes "peak" it should probaby be no less than 150W per channel into 6Ω.

This is /prod/ meaning we pride ourselves in not having the passive feeling of "Hey maybe if I post my soundcloud and put myself out there, I will get more known and people will like my music and I will have fans and friends". Instead we use clyp.it or any other form of rather anonymous posting of WIPs and the like because this is a thread for questions and in context conversation. You are more than welcome to post here, but please do it with purpose. You will not gain anything here by posting your soundcloud other than a bunch of people telling you to fuck off. I love you

Try adding some reverb on your lead and also try adding some accompaniment under your lead to give it depth and melody.

Reminds me of 90's dance music just with a little less depth but still holding some modern elements.

Ableton is the best horizontal track based DAW right now. Renoise is the best vertical track based (or simply called a 'tracker') DAW right now.

Others include but are not limited to Pro Tools, FL Studio, Sunvox, Sonar, Cubase, Logic, Reason, MuLab. That's in descending order from most shit to least shit, but they're all shit.

I think the percussion is good, with the snare stabs and hihat delay and stuff. That's all cool. The synth line makes it boring I think though. If you wanted to keep it the way it is, you could emphasize the hell out of the "and" that you have before all the new synth notes. Like how it goes, "one, two, three, four AND, one, two,..." Or you could just make the synth more interesting instead of just having it hold and not change, maybe put an envelope on it so it can change when each note is held.

Well Ableton is a fucking great program. If you're fine with a learning curve, I'd say get on Ableton because in the end it's worth it. Reason is really fun to learn on though. Cubase is very powerful, but its the kinda program you use if your gonna hook a big mixer up to it and you have a separate control room and all that shit, besides Pro Tools of course. These are the only ones I've used.

A curve that is destroyed by the pastebin and reading Ableton's manual. A rule of thumb; always RTFM! It will chop your DAW mastery time to bits.
>>
>>53011722
I will by saturday
>>
>>53011794
The anon up there pretty much gave it to you straight; except for all other DAWs being shit. About all of those DAWs have free demos that you can try. I recommend you atleast try Fruity Loops and Ableton and pick the one you feel most comfortable it. Pro Tools and Cubase are very similar so try whichever (or don't).

Maybe you should give Renoise a try, so you could see what using a tracker feels like. You might like the workflow more. If you feel you're still not comfy in none of those you could also try Reason which is very good because it teaches you how synths and effects and racks connect visually, not just a setting on a drop down box.
>>
>>53012163
I forgot to say, it depends on what YOU want to do. Make bleeps? Record live instruments/vocals? Bit of both? From there on in you pick the DAW with the workflow you like most.
>>
is it easier making synth with keyboard synthesizer? i'm tired of all this mouse clicking and want to do some hands on shit cause th mouse clicking is hella boring. also do the the keyboard synthesizers or just synthesizers get as buck wild and make cool as sounds like software synths?
>>
>>53012163
Another option I would recommend (which I am using currently, as well as Pro Tools on my other computer) is reaper. It's really feature-rich and you can try it free for 60 days. Even if you don't want to use it in the long run, it's a good start because its pretty close in features to the major DAWS and downloads almost instantly because it's so small. It's also only sixty bucks to buy, which is great if you like it. I record mostly acoustic music and it works great for that.
>>
>>53011794
Finding a comfortable workflow is pretty important so just try everything. Also, personally, I find that with workflow faster does not always mean better, sometimes the more hoops you have to jump through to get something done makes you stop and think why you're doing it or how it could be done differently.
>>
>>53012232
software is just easier and more powerful per dollar than hardware. you're gonna have to actually learn how to play a keyboard if you want to abandon the piano roll altogether.
>>

you can buy a prophet 12 and make some cool as fuck sounds with it. it will also be intuitive as fuck with all those knobs and mod options. but a prophet 12 is like fucking 2000 bucks and you can pirate most soft synths that are worth anything.

If you really wanna turn knobs (which i prefer myself) get some kind of controller with knobs and sliders and then assign that controller to parameters in your soft synths. hardware synths are awesome and fun, but it all depends on what you wanna get out of it and how much money you can spend. you can do most normal stuff with soft synths that you can do with analog, it's mainly the aesthetic and that a lot of analog synths have some character that makes them kinda unique from each other, like if you were to compare a DSI vs an oberheim, the oberheim will have this more natural brassy, round sound, where the dsi will probably sound a tad thinner in comparrison. sorry if this is a lot, kinda drunk.

well i was already gonna get a keyboard and rehash on my piano skills so thats not a problem. i hate the constant clicking and it takes forevr to experiment with sounds and it seems easier and faster to do with a synthesizer. it's just with all the youtube videos i see of people making sounds with synthesizers it's literally like bleeops and bloops and sawy sounds noting really good or cool sounding like you'd get out of a software synth

seriously? i could a controller up to massive or absynth? sounds incrediblycomplicated

>>53012494
if you plan to use software synths and dont really care for the lame restrictive bleeps and bloops some of the reasonably priced, affordable synths have, then simply get a good midi controller, bro. They're way cheaper. One with plenty of knobs and faders and maybe pads too.

Any ESQ-1 owners on here? Do you make dungeon synth with it?

I mean, it's as complicated as you want to make it, You could just assign knobs to those quick edit parameters in massive or anything else. the routing you'd be mouse clicking in obviously, but mouse clicking for routing is not any more mundane than hardware. it's really all about the knobs and the parameters you like to fuck around with.

Not him, but YES!

I'll have you know that Waldorf Largo lets you map literally every single parameter within the program. Every fucking parameter. Other programs its kind of annoying because there can be important things that aren't midi assignable, like toggle buttons and switches. I actually spent a lot of time organizing all of the Largo parameters on my Novation sl mkII so that I could pull the keyboard away from the screen and control the synth fully without having to look at the screen at all. I even labeled my midi controller with pieces of paper because I thought I was gonna use Largo all the time from then on. I don't.

well it's just the videos i see is just bleeps and bloops but i see some people studios and feel like there's waaaay more to hardware. looks ten times more interesting than sitting on my left clicking for hours on end just don't know if it's worth the money

damn that's fucking tight. i'm bouta check that shit out thanks for the info bro
>>
>>53012723
and btw, if anyone uses a Novation sl mkII variant and has Largo or wants to get it, I can give you a copy of the pretty well organized control map I made (it took a lot of time to do)

Man I wish Ableton Sampler could do warping.

Hey man I'm about to get a novation launchkey 49, used for about $170. Its gonna be my first midi controller with knobs, faders and pads, I already have a 88 key Yamaha that has midi but only in keys, no controls. Plus the 49 fits on my desk.

Do you think the SL mkii is enough of an upgrade to be worth the extra $$?

so is the largo shit? amazon says they're out of stock and that the package weighs 488oz
>on a downloable item
WTF do they send you the install on a pen drive or someshit

Eh depends on how you produce. Honestly I hardly use the buttons and knobs on my SL mkII. It's only really useful if you plan to move the keyboard away from the screen because then it offers you plenty of control. Otherwise it can be just easier to use your mouse. If you wanted to do a live performance and do some fancy production stuff on the fly, then yeah it could really be helpful. Even so, the launchkey could probably handle that to a degree.

Huh, thats weird. I pirated it though.
