The problem with that is that I only have his finished version of the track. Just that MP3 file. I asked him if he still has the project file or higher quality file, maybe even the seperate instruments as tracks so I could put more work into editing it but the way it is now the kick only sounds even more muddy when I try to make it punchy because there is so much going on in the low frequencies

Try using a multi-band or any other compressor on your snare, it sounds bland compared to the rest of the sounds.
The bass is pretty fine, the vocal chops and stuff are fine too, vol up your hats though.
Good stuff though.
Its not just about the trap-theme and sound design, go into the details of sounds.
Check out some "Hucci" for clearer trap sounds! Pay attention to the details.
