it's just that this album, in terms of aesthetics, harmony, rhythm and linear progression, is objectively superior to most metal, and does a great job of weeding out image obsessed poseurs due to its -uhm- extrinsic content
so i'd say it definitely qualifies for this thread, at least

The negative reaction to USBM (and wider atmospheric black metal in general) is interesting. Early BM artists were not shy in taking influence from electronic artists, krautrock bands, folk, classical, punk, and even aspects of noise music. The 'true' scene is so inward-looking now, that anyone who pulls from outside influences is dismissed as a poser, whilst scenes that spin their wheels creatively ('war metal', I'm looking at you) get heaped with praise for playing it safe.
