Is Richard D. James legitimately the greatest Electronic artist of all time? If not, who can really contest him in influence, notoriety, and quality? Aside from perhaps Kraftwerk?
>>

deadmau5

I prefer Autechre but I wouldn't contest that Aphex's influence is much larger

you didn't provide any counterarguments

>>

Really for his electronic music, though?
>>51907130
Nice counterarguments that you DON'T have.
>>
Karlheinz Stockhausen, of cuz, #1 of all times
>>
>>51907094

no

I provided no arguments

Because there isn't a fucking "argument" to start with you fanboi cocksucker

But let me at least provide an insight: statements such as "greatest" and "quality" are completely pointless when discussing music, SPECIALLY something like electronic music

And newsflash: outside a very few specific subgenres that are dead nowadays, RDJ wasn't that influential
>>
>>51906980
as far as influential goes

kraftwerk
daft punk
aphex

as far as GOAT goes all of the above in addition to
Deadmau5
BoC
>>
>>51907130

Pretty much this

This shithole is the plebfest when it comes to electronic music.

>RDJ, BoC, Autechre/Squarepusher, the list could go on
>>
>>51907154
Well of course, but this is just popular music.
>>51907165
I just heard a lot of
>he's not obscure enough for me to say I like him
Provide other examples please.
>>51907193
Daft Punk above Aphex, rly?
>>51907195
Those aren't bad artists.
>>
>>51907122
>>51906980
>RDJ
>Eno
>Kraftwerk

these are all from totally different times, you can hardly compare them by influence and i think that electronic strongly depends on the technological progress of that time so comparison in quality is kind of hard as well

Don't lie to yourself, you know it's true.

Also, I take back Kraftwerk being GOAT. As far as I know they were just one of the first to push electronic music to a huge audience.
>>
>>51907257
kill yourself
>>
>>51907202

>>he's not obscure enough for me to say I like him

Nope

He made electronic music for neckbeards that weren't cool enough to go to raves.

He did some GOAT albums (SAWs) as well as EPs (Xtal is one of my fav songs) but as far as "influential" in the grand scheme of things? Puhh-leeease. Breaks/acid and ambient techno, all of which are dead genres. And not only that, even at their prime, nobody gave a fuck about them outside of Bongland and Burgerland

And why is it always the RDJ fanbois trying to come up with reasons to justify their cocksucking? The whole point of electronic music is DIY: a drum machine/synth and a few effects, add talent and anyone can become an electronic music producer. Stop with the fucking hyperboles. RDJ had his time, everybody knows his influence, but he hasn't influenced jack shit since SAW.
>>
>>51907299
>As far as I know they were just one of the first to push electronic music to a huge audience.
That's pretty important in terms of notoriety and influence though.
I'm not a fan of all of their stuff, but records like TEE and Radioactivity are great.
>>
Avicii.
>>
>>51907202

>Those aren't bad artists.

Thats not the point, the point is, stop with the same fucking producers you entry level pleb. This is like discussing rock music by talking about the Beatles, Chuck Berry and James Brown
>>
>>51907340
Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk has cited Aphex Twin (particularly "Windowlicker") as an influence.[69] Former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante said that Aphex Twin is "the best thing since sliced bread", and his Outsides EP and PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone are examples of James' influence.

In June 2014, Patrick Gräser (Answer Code Request) called James "one producer who always inspires" him in the "Influences" section of the Ransom Note website. Gräser used the Aphex Twin song "Analogue Bubblebath 1" to exemplify James' influence: "I guess being obsessed with your own music is what makes him that brilliant."[61]

Linkin Park cited Aphex Twin as an influence.[70] In June 2014, Wes Borland of Limp Bizkit stated "Cliffs" off of Selected Ambient Works II is the song he would listen to for the rest of his life - if he had to pick one.[71]

Wow so a duo whose MO is to lift off basslines from obscure funk/disco songs and add a 4/4 beat on top of their faggy vocoder shit, a shit band that hasn't been relevant in 20 years, a no-namer and LINKIN PARK think RDJ is da best thing evaarrrrr

Thanks for proving my point

>>
>>51907441
If we were discussing classical music then of course it would be no contest for Stockhausen or I guess Varese.
>>
>>51907145
You chastise me for not providing a counter argument, but outside of "I think it so" you have no support for yours. If we were to go by two of the qualities you mentioned; influence and notoriety, you might as well be proclaiming Daft Punk to be the best electronic artist of all time. Which brings up the largest issue with your "argument", it isn't one. You ask if RDJ is the greatest artist based on three principles, two of which I mentioned before, Influence and notoriety, as well as quality. Quality is entirely subjective and gets thrown out right from the get go, such as how I personally prefer Nero's Day at Disneyland over RDJ marking off that category. Next I'll restate my argument against notoriety, there are plenty of electronic artists who are more well known than RDJ, IE; Justice, Daft Punk, Skrillex, etc. Finally as for how influential he is, outside of the "IDM" or breakcore scene it's difficult to say he had more influence than someone like Tristam Cary or Giorgio Moroder and his contemporaries. Simply being well known to most hipsters doesn't automatically mean he single handedly revolutionized electronic music.
>>
>>51907441
bastien stockhausen and dockstader are all better
>>
>>51906980
JM. Jarre and Mort Garson were pretty big back in the day. I have no clue why no one talks about them now. Imo Wendy Carlos is more important than Aphex Twin though.
>>
>>51907465
>you might as well be proclaiming Daft Punk to be the best electronic artist of all time.
Possibly, although if not RDJ it would be Kraftwerk.
>Quality is entirely subjective
Oh I'm sorry. I didn't realize Berwald could totally be considered superior to Beethoven.
>there are plenty of electronic artists who are more well known than RDJ, IE; Justice, Daft Punk, Skrillex
Well sure if you consider the ultra mainstream.
>>
>>51907461
OP only said "Electronic artist". Nothing specific about popular or classical music.
>>
SAW is probably the most overrated album in electronic music
>>
>>51907521

When I said "artist," I am deliberately excluding composers from the discussion.

Influence and notoriety aren't a good basis for judging an artist. My personal pick would be Pan Sonic.
>>
>>51907618
popular music = artist
classical music = composer

I guess Jazz is a middle ground.

The terms don't mean anything. It's just how they are most commonly used.

"Better" Doesn't exist in isolation. You can only be better at something.....So if someone enjoys it more, it's better at making that person like it.

He says quality is subjective.

Very simple really. Only people who eat paste can't understand it.

It depends on the criteria...
If it is "Making good compositions", That's just the same "good" requires a standard too, you have to be good at something.

fking noob, please name me some other producer that did electronica like RDJ and was that influential at the same time. And no, quality is not subjective, there are many ways how to separate bullshit from good stuff. You probably have no fking idea of music production and want to impose ur hipster bullshit. Come at me bro
and btw, BoC > all
>>
not many can match him in any of those categories
maybe Robert Hood and Kraftwerk and I guess even Tangerine Dream in implementing the use of electronics in music, but Aphex was one of the first to put it all together in such a manner.
Xtal (and a few other tracks off SAW85) has to be considered one of the defining moments in electronic music of any sort, a real game changer at the time.
so yeah, in my mind he has to be up there in influence and quality

The raves in the states are a sick joke so it's not surprising people play shit like that. Whens the last time you went to a rave and heard Boards Of Canada, Square Pusher, Aphex Twin or anything else besides sub genres of dubstep and house? People in the states have this pre conceived notion that if it isn't derpstep or house it's shit. Fuck them all.
