the point I'm trying to make is that I disagree with the claim that "it can't really help newcomers, there are way too many to choose from" because I believe that the aformentioned pastebin encourages at least some degree of exploration as opposed to being spoonfed a small list of "essentials", while you might think what you are doing is helping newcomers, it's kind of a hindrance to discussion as it encourages newfags to listen to the same shit as everyone else, and not explore shit for themselves, and thus not bring anything new to the table

Number Girl (www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRglM_0l-Tc) should be included if you're going to put Zazen Boys in btw. They play Fugazi-ish post-hardcore but it has a gritty edge to it. The frontman for Zazen Boys was the frontman for Number Girl. ZB can be hit or miss - Their first, third and most recent albums are really meh. Number Girl are more consistent/influential.
Also throw in Bloodthirsty Butchers - Kocorono (www.youtube.com/watch?v=CA_Rg4GiK_s). It's basically the Japanese Zen Arcade.
I'd say Cowpers belong there too but I'm biased because I like Cowpers a lot. Nobody listens to Cowpers on /mu/.
