>>
>>50590487
According to wikipedia:
"Zen Arcade tells the story of a young man who runs away to escape a miserable and abusive home life ("Broken Home, Broken Heart," "Never Talking to You Again"). The character briefly joins the military ("Chartered Trips"), turns to religion ("Hare Krsna"), and seems to find a tenuous peace through love ("Somewhere") before losing his girlfriend to drugs ("Pink Turns to Blue").[7] He reaches a point of despair, ultimately concluding that he won't be able to change his circumstances ("Newest Industry", "Whatever") before waking up to find that the whole odyssey had occurred in his subconscious during a night of troubled sleep; the challenges of his life—for better or for worse—remain in front of him ("The Tooth Fairy and the Princess," "Turn on the News"). "Reoccurring Dreams", a disorienting 14-minute instrumental that reprises a shorter instrumental interlude ("Dreams Reoccurring"), closes the album."

It is true however, name an album that doesn't have an overall theme.

>And more specifically, concept albums tell a "story"
Okay, a different definition it is.
Hospice (because it has two or three songs providing some sort of a story, and not an entire album, for the entire album it's just an overall theme) is not a concept album.

>>50593330
What do you mean by narrative?

Talking about concept albums is like talking about concept books, absolutely ridiculous.

I haven't listened to that albumn. But "bombarding the listener with profanity" is still a concept.
It's a totally superfluous label.
>>
>>50593580
It's not bombarding the listener with profanity. You should check the album out, it treads on a lot of different genres and covers a whole lot of "themes".

You are having a difficult time grasping the idea of a concept album and your generalization of "every album has a theme" is ridiculously nearsighted. Will you just keep pulling back until the theme is "music"?

A concept album is a narrative. It has a story, usually with characters, that either creates a world and sometimes follows a traditional three act format. There's typically a story arc - exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and denouement. Think of albums like Histoire de Melody Nelson, Twelve Reasons to Die, Tallahassee, or Year Zero.

Also pic related.

okay I might listen to it.

>A concept album is a narrative. It has a story, usually with characters,
I am just gonna take this to mean "it HAS am overlapping narrative", rather than it being a narrative itself. (otherwise the narrative is deducable to the string of words that are connected)

What do you mean by "story"?
Because with every album there are people thinking about what it's trying to do or say or show or make the listereners experience.

And I think there's a difference between the superfluous term "concept album" and the somewhate more useful description "an album with a clear overlapping narrative".

Okay, I provided plenty of examples and I laid out a clear and rational definition for you, I really don't know what you're expecting. A concept album is an album that tells a story. If you can describe an album like

>"This album tells a story about a guy who cannot grasp the idea of a concept album. People try to clarify and resolve his misunderstanding and confusion, but it only leads to more confusion. Eventually, one guy murders him with a rake covered in chicken shit and everyone throws a big party. The last track is my favorite part of the album, because it's the denouement where the dumb guy dies."

then it's a fucking concept album.

Really out-there art-punk/prog-rock/something concept album on the life of HP Lovecraft. Most of the music and lyrics were written by a guy with schizoaffective disorder who ended up in a mental institution a few years later. Really jittery and unhinged music with a shit ton of different vocal styles and general weirdness. It's the perfect HPL related album IMO.

>>
>>50594129
Providing examples doesn't really explain what a thing is.

I rationally pointed out my problems with your definition. Shouldn't you call out people like >>50593496 and >>50593478 for posting albums without a single overlapping narrative, but having several narratives only some of which contribute to the overall narrative?

I think you're using a wrong definition of the term concept album.

but not all songs contribute to that narrative. I could have an album where I start the first song with the word "I" and end the last track with the "am dead", giving it an overlapping narrative.

>I was just trying to clarify the issues you were having
You didn't do this particularly well now did you?

>>50594399
I can grasp the idea, I'm not an idiot. But you're failing to provide a definition that doesn't disqualify half of the albums in this thread as well as reducing the album to its "text".
