I haven't visited /mu/ in 4 years, i felt compelled to return, as i got this album in a sharethread about 4 or 5 years ago. I only just got around to listening to it last night and damn, was I glad i finally did.
Getting a late 90's early 2000's Opeth vibe from some of the songs, but there's definitely more to it than that. Really good shit, thanks /mu/.

Every black metal chart is shit, watch the movie: Until the Light take Us. After that go for the classics, Darkthrone, Burzum, Mayhem, Emperor, Immortal, etc. And see which one you like the most, what do you like and what you don't like in black metal, like the use of synths, or lo-fi quality, or hi-fi, etc, black metal will slowly grow up in you.
>>
>>49884882

The only metal I really listened to is some 80's thrash like Mercyful Fate, Suicidal Tendencies and Metallica. I also listen to some crust punk like Dystopia and Driller Killer. What recently got me more interested in metal was listening to Sunbather after seeing it all around /mu/ and listening to this track (http://thecomplaintregister.bandcamp.com/track/sleep-until-it-hurts-you) because I heard it was made by Lil Ugly Mane. So I'm looking for stuff with that kind of sound.

there's definitely something waiting to happen that'll have the 'spirit' of old black metal but it won't be more black metal with supposedly more 'deep n' serious' lyrics and some jazz or whatever. black metal as a genre now is in the same place as death metal, you can keep having fun with it and perfecting the formula forever but it's never going to throw up anything really unique again. I like a lot of this new stuff but I really don't see what's so significant and groundbreaking about it
>>
>>49885781
I tried to ask them in their AMA if their lyrics mean anything or are random gibberish, but I got "Xen writes the lyrics, they probably mean something".

but seriously most of the lyrics are so nonsensical
>>

because its the first music genre that has a serious dialogue about existentialism at its core. what is happening in bm atm is a huge reaction to the negative side of postmodernism. its the final ressurection of cathartic, expression based art, and the only thing we have left to deal with thematically is how we have nothing to deal with. it is important.

i think it's more meant to paint an overall aesthetic than to make any unbroken narrative sense, though it is clear that it concerns mortality and the inability of humans to understand the vast scope of the cosmos (see And Plague Flowers - the "flagellants/kings of our emptiness" depart with their mouths filled with questions, but return with their mouths filled with ashes and the questions unanswered). for the most part they're so hilariously pretentious that I don't bother making head nor tail of them, though they do elicit some cool mental images

"what waits beyond in exile's garden sings of the unknown/the renaissance of death echoes eternally, all's not lost" is a legit amazing lyrics, though, chills every time

there is nothing else that artists could have taken hold of think about it -

blast beats etc create an almost trance like state in the listener, its almost spiritual. the vocals are unadultered emotion and the base gives heaps of freedom for experimentation. it was already starting to happen given the background it had in anti-religion in the 90s. once ou forsake a belief system the next logical progression is nihilistic tendencies and then what? it is a genre where everything has broken down and now its basically in a state of ego death - and people from outside the genre all over the world are starting to get involved.

Easily my favorite thrash album. The churning guitar tone blends into the relentless drumming, creating a sound like a pummeling wave of floodwater. If there were a way to blend thrash and doom, this kind of sound would be it, fast and technical riffs that blend into a massive homogenized sound. It's a shame the album doesn't have better production too, a lot of heaviness is lost in the guitar tone and it still manages to be heavy as fuck.

This is a great fucking album, and I wish their recent stuff was as good.

Is there any symphonic black/death metal out there that's actually good? Not just an average choir or a few violins in the beginning of a couple songs? I'm thinking Epica-style orchestral additions but death and/or black metal added.

I feel Moongod is even more orchestrated than DotU, but it's one of the very few albums where every track is a gem in its own way. Be it straight up death (Xibalba, Invading Jerusalem) or slower and more melodic tunes (Iram Of The Pillars, Descent Of Gods), they do their work well and it's some of the best production I've ever heard.
>>

>>

>There are only a few new tech/prog thrash bands even in existence today

Have you been living under a rock? There's been a bunch of spacey tech prog thrash since 2010 to the point it's getting ridiculous now.
>>
>>49887632
lolno. Vektor and a few similar bands trying to do similar (Teleport, Exocosm, etc) does not mean much of anything compared to the glory days of techno-thrash.
>>
>>49887625
There are literally dozens of tech-thrash albums from 1985 to 1993 that make Vektor their bitch.
>>
>>49887549
Sodom,Barf,kreator,tankard,anonymus,voivod

There's also annhilator but they are really hit or miss so meh
>>
>>49887632
well, there's reek, exocosm, paranorm, hexen, and exmortus i guess?? but like, look at this list

https://rateyourmusic.com/list/terraasymmetry/technical_thrash_metal__an_exhaustive_study__1984_present_/6/

look at the insane amount of stuff released in 91-93. there's nothing even close to that happening now. there's only a few prog thrash acts i can think of right now, even including obscure ones and shit that doesn't really count (e: revocation, which is just tech death basically)
>>
>>49887665
I was just saying there's a lot more technical/prog thrash today than there is in the past, of course 80s and 90s tech/prog thrash is better with a few exceptions.

Agreed about Vektor though, Obliveon annihilates Vektor anyways and has been doing Vektor's sound almost two decades before Vektor was even a thing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lChCYQlxOjI
>>
>>49887729
the new exmortus is barely even thrash, hexen's newest had some interesting bits but far from full-on prog/tech thrash, paranorm is decent but nothing special.

i got a ban warning for referring to Coil, a band that wrote numerous songs about male on male sex, as "fucking gay"

RYM is an incredibly stupid website.
>>
>>49887741
No, there isn't. Coroner, Watchtower, Voivod, Mekong Delta, Aspid, Obliveon, DBC, Anacrusis, Annihilator, Depressive Age, Realm, Deathrow's Deception Ignored, Disciples of Power, Nasty Savage, Despair, I COULD KEEP GOING. All of those bands had fairly distinct sounds from each other and a good number easily surpass Vektor in terms of originality.
>>
>>49887807
I got banned for literally no reason though, when I first came to /mu/ I clicked on a RYM link and it said I was banned lel.
>>

>>

>>
>>49887859
Vektor has moments of greatness, but damn are they inconsistent with bringing the riffing. Too many simple melodic thrash riffs that sound like 90s Death knock-offs, and the songs sometimes get overlong like 90s Death as well.
>>
>>49887897
Agreed, but you can't forget that Tetrastructural Minds is one of the greatest thrash metal songs of all time speaks a lot too.

Wouldn't say GOAT, but it's one of Vektor's greatest at least. I'd take probably 30 Coroner songs over it still.
>>
>>49887797
Please point me to the existence of a modern underground technical thrash scene on par with that which existed in the 90-93 period, where there were fucking tons of tech thrash bands everywhere you looked. I can count the number of active modern tech thrash projects on my hands and feet, even if you include bands which aren't active any more like Cautiva and Children, and old bands that are active like Mekong Delta

I mean, sure, Droid, Teleport, Alitor, Surrealist and Violent Omen are also around, but that's still nothing compared to the genre's heyday
>>
>>49887967
>tfw there was an early 90s tech-thrash Surrealist better than the current one
>>
>>49887967

>>
>>49887967
Quebec, Canada has a shitload of garage-tier progressive/technical thrash bands.

There's more prog/tech thrash bands today but it's a given fact that 80s-90s tech/prog thrash is the best in terms of quality.
>>
>>49888026
Depends on what aspects of Screams & Whispers appeal to you. Depressive Age's first album doesn't really sound like it, per se, but it's a dark and emotional prog/thrash album that could appeal to the same mood.
>>
>>49888071

>>
>>49888045
Did you even see the list of bands I posted? You are wrong. Admit it. The QUANTITY, as well as quality, of current tech/prog-thrash bands is lower than those of the 80s/90s.

I know this, but a lot of them haven't put out a demo or EP.

>>49888026
try Depressive Age's first album, as well as Wolf Spider, Psychotic Waltz and Thought Industry

Anacrusis are among the more methodical and prog-oriented of the tech thrash bands, so look in that direction. Most of that stuff is more similar to Manic Impressions than it is to S&W admittedly, but it's worth a look.
>>
>>49888136

Is Inner Control one of the demo Quebecois bands you're talking about? This shit actually sounds kind of neat, very old-school but still wild, kinda Spectral Incursion-style.

It's honestly been a while since I listened to S&W so I can't be of too much help. What did you dislike about the other tech thrash you tried though? Too dissonant?
>>
>>49888103
lel I live in Quebec man, almost everywhere there's bands who are living in the empty shell of Quebec's 80s-90s prog-thrash scene. They';re mostly shit but we're talking about quantity over quality here anyways.

Here's the only notable ones but they're mostly just voivod clones. Saw them live but can't find them anywhere on the internet

>Arachnophile
>Corpsemachine
>>
>>49888251
I honestly can't recall as I haven't listened to it in a while either, but I think that was it. In general I prefer the melodious, atmospheric and/or emotional approach. I like the harsh aspects mostly for the contrast and increased potential for dynamics.

>>

Well, maybe hold off on it. Tech thrash is not a genre of music that is renowned for emotional impact. I do like the weird freaky atmospheres the bands conjure sometimes (Skeptic Sense's demo is particularly disorienting), though it might just be my love of sci-fi speaking there.
>>

Quebec has a pretty decent metal scene except for those shitty melo death band

Eh, I felt that S&W was pretty emotionally laden, and Anacrusis, especially for the genre. I'd be happy to give the bands a shot at least, I can always turn it off if it's clearly not my thing.
>>
>>49888549
Psychotic Waltz have really awesome atmosphere IMO, you should look into em first.

>>
>>49889359
well i know that exists but i mean like a crossover between tech thrash technicality in riffs and song construction with the happiness and catchiness of power metal

most prog power metal doesn't have much in the way of actual riffs, just chugs over keyboard noodling, and the songwriting isn't too complex
