Sufjan is indeed one of the better composers out there, but you'd be crazy to think that his utilization of the techniques which the aforementioned composers pioneered doesn't veer on outright plagiarism. In any case Stevens alone is responsible for half the music we hear today, and I was utterly shocked when The Age of Adz didn't get the recognition it deserved. That album, right there, is his fucking masterpiece.

But neither is this.
Racism is at the heart of Lovecraft's whole thing. It's absolutely fundamental to him. He's not great despite being racist, he's great BECAUSE he was racist. He channeled that xenophobic loathing, and it worked.
The important thing is that Lovecraft doesn't espouse racism at any point, he's just inspired by it. It also sort of helps that he's always racist from a powerless vantage; his is not the racism of the typical successful privileged white dude looking down on ethnic scum, his is the racism of the little old lady who is scared to leave her apartment because her neighbourhood is full of blacks now. It's pitiful rather than despicable.
tl;dr it's pretty easy to appreciate the way Lovecraft builds a palpable sense of this all-consuming fear and loathing of the Other in his work, without condoning that attitude.

Not him, and a bit late to the party, but I myself like Lin's earlier work to some extent, if not primarily just because of how vastly different it is from Taipei. It's pretty interesting how much his style evolved since 2006, much more so than most other authors imo.
And the only people I know in real life who have heard of Lin go on /lit/, so he's not as hip as I'd assumed. Or at least, he isn't in Florida; odd, because he's from that state

Yeah, it's bizarre how different it is. It must be at least in part because of him going full bohemian: at one point (last year I think), he was selling random shit from his house on eBay and was linking the sales on his twitter.
Regarding his popularity, I've seen videos of him doing poetry readings in New York, and he seems to draw a pretty decent crowd. Also, a professor I know recently saw me with Taipei and referred to him iirc as an "underground prodigy" (this was at UCI).
sidenote: youtubing his name right now, apparently he did an hour and a half long interview with Yoni Wolf. Can't imagine what interest Yoni would have in him

He's the king of modernism. As I Lay Dying is probably my favourite of his novels as well. It's cool that you dig Steinbeck, I think he's become kind of unfashionable in the last 30 years or so, but he is a really great writer.

I'm a literature pleb — mostly because I read very slowly and wasn't truly interested in it before I was seventeen or so (when I was younger I read almost nothing but Terry Pratchett, then William Gibson). I've been trying to catch up, but I know it will take me a long time; it's not like I could read several novels a day the way I listen to albums.
So far I've been enjoying Vladimir Nabokov, Jorge Luis Borges, Margaret Atwood, David Mitchell and Virginia Woolf very much. The latest books I've finished were The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón (which was a real page-turner, not deep but I liked it a lot), The Map and the Territory by Michel Houellebecq (very pretentious and self-indulgent), and Cronopios and Famas by Julio Cortázar, which was cute.
I've been thinking about getting into Thomas Pynchon because I keep hearing good things about him, but every time I go to the library and read the first few pages, I think it's not my thing.
