You know, I don’t want to be offensive. But ‘Infinite Jest’ [regarded by many as Wallace’s masterpiece] is just awful. It seems ridiculous to have to say it. He can’t think, he can’t write. There’s no discernible talent.

It's still NMH's ITAOTS, due to the sheer natural voracity that it exudes - it's sheer visceral essence is one that is rarely tapped into, yet it was expressed in the modern and simplistic style which permeated the time period it exists within.

Yefremov's "Stellar Ships." There is no other work within the hard science fiction genre (and by extension 'soft' science fiction) that even approaches "Stellar Ships" in it's tenacity towards making /accurate/ assumptions about the scientific subjects which it operates within.

For those of you interested in HSF, read that book. I'm not sure if it has been translated into English yet (only Spanish from the original Russian source), but I'm working on translating that book and a variety of other ones (there is a compilation made by Jacques Bergier), and I'll look to publish it as soon as I can.

No, but embracing Lovecraft's works seems tantamount to saying attitudes such as racism or sectarianism are perfectly okay - and just because you hold all viewpoints to be equally arbitrary? We're not talking about simple differences in opinion, we're talking about centuries of civil rights offenses and racial oppression. I don't think you're understanding the full gravity of this. The fact that you lack so much empathic capacity as to trivialize something like this and write it off as someone's subjective opinion or preference just underscores one of the more serious issues with society today.

>>48397923
Does listening to Wagner make you a Nazi?
>>
>>48397918
Also, to add to that, Sufjan was definitely taken with minimalism overall. He does rip off Reich, most notably in "Out of Egypt," but it's obvious that he has more pleasure/skill/success replicating Glass' work.

However it should be noted that out of all contemporary singer-songwriters/composers Lite that are out there, Sujan was the first to embrace minimalism AND make it work in a different medium that academic exercise.
>>
>>48397635
>>48398002
I'm surprised ya'll say rip-off. I'd say Sufjan is doing more of an homage that anyone aware of Reich's work will understand. Is he ripping off Schubert with "Now that I'm Older?"

I think problems arise there because there are a lot of well known NS bands that are shite but popular based on ideology alone (see: early Absurd, Pantheon etc.)

Though I also listen to some NS/racist/sexist music as long as the music itself is good.
>>
>>48398026
egypt is artistically valid if for the title alone
>>
>>48398026
No of course, the rhetoric is simply to induce a need to investigate further. Sufjan is indeed one of the better composers out there, but you'd be crazy to think that his utilization of the techniques which the aforementioned composers pioneered doesn't veer on outright plagiarism. In any case Stevens alone is responsible for half the music we hear today, and I was utterly shocked when The Age of Adz didn't get the recognition it deserved. That album, right there, is his fucking masterpiece.

And it's all me bae.
>>
>>48397923

Nah, this isn't true...

>>48397975
>lovecraft's racist shit rarely even comes up in his stories

But neither is this.

Racism is at the heart of Lovecraft's whole thing. It's absolutely fundamental to him. He's not great despite being racist, he's great BECAUSE he was racist. He channeled that xenophobic loathing, and it worked.

The important thing is that Lovecraft doesn't espouse racism at any point, he's just inspired by it. It also sort of helps that he's always racist from a powerless vantage; his is not the racism of the typical successful privileged white dude looking down on ethnic scum, his is the racism of the little old lady who is scared to leave her apartment because her neighbourhood is full of blacks now. It's pitiful rather than despicable.

tl;dr it's pretty easy to appreciate the way Lovecraft builds a palpable sense of this all-consuming fear and loathing of the Other in his work, without condoning that attitude.
>>
>>48398129
>>48398131
I think re-purposing Reich's music for the popular context is a valid artistic choice. What's more, when I hear "Out of Egypt," I'm not like "This is Music for 18 Musicians." I'm like "This sounds very Reich influenced with the close chords and repetition."
Perhaps my definition of plagiarism is too specific, but I don't find him as a plagiarist.

I suppose the brutish way in which I accused Sujan of indulging in the art of replication was a bit over the top. >Mysteries was a far superior novel
Literally the book I'm reading now, and it's for the first time. I love Hamsun's neurotic neo-romantic depictions. All the protagonists seems to have something in common, they struggle somewhat similar (in different contexts ofc), and my theory is that they're all a little autobiographical from the author's side.

Not him, and a bit late to the party, but I myself like Lin's earlier work to some extent, if not primarily just because of how vastly different it is from Taipei. It's pretty interesting how much his style evolved since 2006, much more so than most other authors imo.

And the only people I know in real life who have heard of Lin go on /lit/, so he's not as hip as I'd assumed. Or at least, he isn't in Florida; odd, because he's from that state

Yeah, it's bizarre how different it is. It must be at least in part because of him going full bohemian: at one point (last year I think), he was selling random shit from his house on eBay and was linking the sales on his twitter.
Regarding his popularity, I've seen videos of him doing poetry readings in New York, and he seems to draw a pretty decent crowd. Also, a professor I know recently saw me with Taipei and referred to him iirc as an "underground prodigy" (this was at UCI).
sidenote: youtubing his name right now, apparently he did an hour and a half long interview with Yoni Wolf. Can't imagine what interest Yoni would have in him

He's the king of modernism. As I Lay Dying is probably my favourite of his novels as well. It's cool that you dig Steinbeck, I think he's become kind of unfashionable in the last 30 years or so, but he is a really great writer.

I'm a literature pleb — mostly because I read very slowly and wasn't truly interested in it before I was seventeen or so (when I was younger I read almost nothing but Terry Pratchett, then William Gibson). I've been trying to catch up, but I know it will take me a long time; it's not like I could read several novels a day the way I listen to albums.

So far I've been enjoying Vladimir Nabokov, Jorge Luis Borges, Margaret Atwood, David Mitchell and Virginia Woolf very much. The latest books I've finished were The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón (which was a real page-turner, not deep but I liked it a lot), The Map and the Territory by Michel Houellebecq (very pretentious and self-indulgent), and Cronopios and Famas by Julio Cortázar, which was cute.

I've been thinking about getting into Thomas Pynchon because I keep hearing good things about him, but every time I go to the library and read the first few pages, I think it's not my thing.

sound and the fury is a VERY close runner up for me. and yea, I see that, my father got me into him at a young age with travels with charlie, so I've been reading him all my life. we did OMAM in high school as well, and I'm sure kids are getting exposed that way still
