>>
i always assumed vaporwave was music thats also a critique of global capitalism, usually made by 90's kids raised on mass marketing and the internet. is the recycling of old songs really an essential part of it?
>>
>>47940944
you'll have to find out what the particular artist is saying. to me the music/visuals invokes more feeling then a conceptualization. meaningless media...i'd look into Debord and Baudrillard as mentioned earlier
>>
>>47940944
the recycling of old songs is one element of it, insofar as the effort to invoke nostalgia through fleeting moments.

for example, take a listen to PSR41 off of Laserdisc Visions' 'Initiation Tape - Part One'
the distorted sample here almost invokes the nostalgia more than if she had just sampled the chorus of Africa, and in this way, it almost "objectifies" the nostalgic sentiment

similarly, if we take a look at Solar Panel Smile from James Ferraro's 'Far Side Virtual,' the sound at 0:08 is immediately and poignantly noticeable as the menu screen for the Nintendo Wii.
here, even something so recent as to barely be considered "nostalgia" is still made out to be a fleeting memory via the use and sampling

as >>47941104 points out, though, the interpretation of any art can vary from artist to artist and listener to listener.
as much as an outward, superficial listen might lead one to pass by certain vapor artists as simple rehashes of past work, an analytical listen can unfold layers of emotion
>>
>>47940944
>critique of global capitalism

it's like the genre is slowly being watered down but i suppose its inevitable
>>
>>47941546
me too, but vaporware dieing is bound to be poetically pleasing!
>>
>>47941546
vaporwave itself is a critical simulacra of not only nostalgia-invoking music, but of the concept of music/muzak as a whole
from it's inception, it was bound to be watered down and reproduced, because that's what it stood for to begin with
>>
>>47941677
God... Fuck you. Just shut up and listen to the nice vibes
>>
>>47941677
>from it's inception, it was bound to be watered down and reproduced, because that's what it stood for to begin with
if that was the plan all along, why did most of the original vaporware artists disassociate themselves from the genre?
>>
>>47941775
because they said what they wanted to say
art evolves and transforms, and artists discover things about themselves as they create art
while i wouldn't presume to speak for any artist, my guess is that they felt like they had expressed what they wanted to as best as they could through that medium, inspired a unique way to look at not only art, but culture, through a critical lens, and then decided to move on to other ventures

>>47941757
>God... Fuck you. Just shut up and listen to the nice vibes
this comment actually exemplifies the motivation behind the mallsoft subgenre
in the modern era (modern as in the present, not Modern), people don't have the time, patience, or dedication to critically analyze music or any other artform.
the fact that vaporwave works have been produced that you feel you can just throw on in the background because the "chill vibes" don't require your focus just shows that you are the subject of criticism here

>>
>>47941757
Yeah can I go with "Reductionism: Why I Don't Feel Like Using My Brain" for 300, Alex
>>
>>47942166
i think that the goal of vaporwave artists was never to be "vaporwave" artists or to create their own genre
i think they were making efforts to advance criticism of society into a meta-realm that could capture the spirit of the modern, technological era, and the pros and cons that it brings
when people began to discover their works, they clung onto them and attempted to categorize them without considering the fact that it was a progressing artform with a fluid definition
that's why vektroid has albums that progress through vaporwave, mallsoft, vapornoise, and other various subgenres or 'post-vaporwave' genres, as they've been misnomered

>>47942275
broporwave is the result of people who listen to, and attempt to replicate, vaporwave's superficial aesthetic without an understanding of the movements behind it
this leads to efforts to 'improve' the genre by incorporating more popular, mainstream tendencies (regular beats and rhythm, more overarching melodic veins, heavier direct sampling of music, etc)

I just made my first vaporwave EP, "SEE/SEAS", and would love some feedback. Don't expect anything too experimental or groundbreaking, as this is my first dab into the genre, and I didn't want to step out of my comfort zone on my first attempt. I usually enjoy listening to the really eclectic, unpredictable shit, but this is very laid back, slow burning, and chill. Tell me what you think.

>>

This. Gaperwave should be more an aesthetic rather than a genre, because nobody really follows the really loose conventions of the genre.
>>
>>47943140

If vaporwave was ever a critique of capitalism, it has turned in the opposite direction now and embraced it. At least the better artists

I also think there are many more themes explored than just "capitalism" too.

>>
>>47943140
I know it sounds harsh, but the reason these "implications" are 2deep4you is because you're not educated. For the vast majority of people who attach these implications, its a natural process. There's no trying, and certainly not enough effort expended to limit genuine enjoyment of the music itself. They're simply a natural extension of listening to the music.

Likewise, if you read interviews by essentially anyone who matters in vaporwave, they all discuss similar philosophical and political themes as being central to both the creation and enjoyment of the music itself. If you want to "groove to some fun, campy [nostalgic] pop music" then go listen to actual pop music from the 90s and early 2000s so you don't have to try to think about anything while listening to it.

Hey guys I just released an album on my friends new web label, what do you think? It's exactly what it sounds like, my buddy recently got broken up with, and so it inspired me to make an album capturing those sorts of feelings. Any feedback is much appreciated :)

i don't know you at all, so correct me if i'm wrong, but i think one issue people run into is that they're trying to make vaporwave music. as long as you attach a label to something and then try to replicate it, it's going to seem generic.
maybe if, instead of trying to make a vaporwave track, you tried to comment on something or express an idea, and just used that as an inspiration/medium, it would seem more genuine?

haha, funny story actually...i commented on the facebook page of their label and asked if anyone had an extra copy they didn't want..the label responded and said they'd make an extra copy just for me. pretty cool
yyu isnt strictly vaporwave is it?
also im looking for that cybereality tape and that eyeliner cdr (the first one) since i didnt get a copy when it came out

in fact, i hadn't even started collecting vaporwave stuff until around 2013 even though i've been into it since it started
i've kicked myself multiple times for not buying mac plus when it came out but whatever

I'd say you could get away with it had Vektroid not already done a MIDI cover of Easy Lover as the opener to Home™

>>47946208
Nigga you aint even following what you just said "amen" to wth
>>
>>47946196
this seems really overwrought
i'm not sure what you're trying to get across here... fake leaves, fake gold grapes, fake marble, fake gold paint - would suggest the bust is weeping at the artificiality of nature
juxtaposition might also suggest, instead, that it's nature being augmented by modern aesthetic

maybe youre right
listening to yours
>>
>>47946292
my initial thought was that this was someone kissing a mirror, although that's obviously not true
taking the title, 'etheromance,' into account, i'd guess that this is a moment of duality wherein a person's desires become clear to them through an ether haze, and they become enamored with those desires, only to realize they were within themselves all along
