Ambient thread?

Looking for soundalikes to Brian Eno, Stars of the Lid, Tim Hecker, Hammock, etc.
Any suggestions?

Alternatively, post your favorite ambient/post rock albums.

This has been on replay for a bit for me. Very great mix of ambient and post-rock aesthetic.

the peak of ambient music
>>
Check out Grouper's AIA, both AIA albums are her best and consist of some of the best music I ever listened to,

Deathprod - Morals and Dogma is also fantastic a fantastic dark ambient but track 2 and to a lesser extent track 4 are something different(this is a good thing though)...

Steve Roach - Dreamtime Return although cheesy at times is a really fantastic tribal ambient album that manages to take ambient to the next level and it still sounds really good.

Eluvium - Talk Amongst Trees though is the closest thing I know that sounds like all four of those artists you mentioned. Easily his best work and in my opinion a landmark ambient album.

This should do you well for now.

You have not listened to that much ambient have you?
>>
>>47578110
More than you, I should imagine
>>

>these opinions

Goddamn I love them. Also I know right for Eluvium? I mean, that album is like his best work ever and the dude's never done anything close to it again.
>>
>>47578119
Just surprised that you would consider that as your favorite if you listened to a ton of ambient. Yeah its a good album but I have listened to ambient albums that immobilize me due to how powerful they are.

Just wondering what are your other favorite ambient albums?
>>
>>47578163
>immobilize me due to how powerful they are

please list some of those
>>
>>47578163
damn its like music is subjective and popular records are popular for a reason

some other favourites:
discreet music
new age of earth
passion
pavilion of dreams
klf chillout
inside (the taj mahal)
76:14
and I prefer structures of silence to dreamtime return
>>
>>47578149
I still think his discography is consistently good its just that he never got as good as Talk Amongst Trees

>>47578185
Stars of the lid - The Tired Sounds of the Stars of the Lid and Of Refinement in Decline
Grouper - Dream Loss
Birchville Cats Motel - Beautiful Spec Triumph
Deathprod - Morals and Dogma
Natural Snow Buildings - Dance of The Moon and Sun
Supersilent - 8
Carbon Based Lifeforms - World of Sleepers
Colleen - The Golden Morning Breaks
The Slaves - Spirit of the Sun
Seirom - 1973
William Basinski - Disintergration loops
Steve Roach - Dreamtime Return

>>47578257
I used to think Structures of Silence was better but Dreamtime Return really grew on me.
>>
>>47577205
I love Eno and Hecker. Another favourite of mine is Fennesz, so you might like him. Especially Venice and Black Sea.
>>
>>47578257
Have you listened to World of Sleepers? You seemed to be biased more towards electronic ambient more than anything. I think you would really enjoy World of Sleepers.
>>
>>47578341
If I am its purely because that's what I've listened to, I'm open towards ambient in all its forms. I'll check the album out anyway, thanks. I'm sure I've seen it before in a list or something but I haven't listened
>>
>>47578359
Yeah you are in for a real treat. Don't let the trance label turn you off, its really better than that. Also check out its prequel Hydrophonic garden if you like World of Sleepers along with Interloper.

My AOTY last year, I really like dark ambient like the Haxan cloak also would love some recommendations
>>
>>47578289
Some of that stuff is ambient, but you also listed a few just drone albums drone =/= ambient although a lot of ambient uses droning elements.
>>
In need of more non drone-y ambient

Although it may be noisier than what you posted, you might like this. Contains elements of black metal but not hugely noticeable
>>
>>47578457
I've been diggin Biosphere - Dropsonde lately. It's actually a bit jazzy which is interesting.
>>47578504
That album is pretty good, although from what I've heard I like their early more drone stuff.

I find Ben Frost to be way better than Tim Hecker, but, you know, opinions.

>forgetting By the Throat
Anyways, I've found everything by Frost to be around the same quality for me which is like an 8/10.
Hecker and Frost make very different music though, so it's a bit unfair to compare them (even if they've helped on each other's albums)

Like you said, opinions
Thanks though
>>

For me, Ben Frost's material is around 7/10 (category where I find music interresting enough to be relistenable). Hecker is slightly below (6 - 6.5 /10, not bad but not captivating).

Otherwise, my favorite ambient musics are Hash Jar Tempo's "Well Oiled", Pärson Sound's s/t, and Lightwave's "Mundus Subterraneus". Does someone have some recs ?

Parson Sound and Has Jar Tempo's are psychedelic rock albums but they are both excellent.

Have you checked out Tycho Brahe yet? Its Lightwave's magnum opus along with the album you mentioned so I would go check that album out. Considering that you like soundscapey music I would also recommend you Grouper - AIA

Pic related is not an ambient album but I think you will really like this record.
>>
>>47578706
Well like I said I like all of his stuff about the same, but it's probably his strongest work. Steel Wound is severely underrated though because it's so different from his other work, which is a shame.
>>
Antonymes has always been my favorite in the Ambient genre.
