Nice, I've had Hella in my backlog for a while now, still haven't got around to listening to their stuff. I like Death Grips a lot and have been meaning to explore Zach Hill's other projects to see what's up.

Really? It's got a ton of standout tracks for me. I'm going through the Prefuse discography slowly, just have Vocal Studies, One Word & Ampexian under my belt as of now.

if you dug extinguisher, then extinguished is essential, it's very close to the same quality. formatted more like ampexian though (lots of short tracks).

Thanks man, I'll check that one out next. I was a little put off by Ampexian at first because of the short-song format but it's growing on me fast. It's pretty damn good when the whole album is taken to be a single piece instead of a collection of songs. I still prefer his first two albums though.
Also worth saying it's got one of my favorite album arts of all time.

Prefuse to me has this Nujabes feel to him. For some reason I have always associated his sounds with nostalgia. Maybe you'll agree with me, but I feel like he stagnated. He shows little evolution between records, but then again, you can't really best what's almost perfect. :v)

Hella is just incredible. Read some interviews from back them (as the duo). Zach's mindset about himself, his music and his approach to musical experimentation was incredible already. To think Hold Your Horse Is was released in 2002. Crazy.
I'd say that only Church Gone Wild/Chirpin Hard and Tripper are their weak records, but the former not even because of Zach's part and the latter because they kinda play it safe with Tripper. A "back to the roots" album. Actually it's not even that bad, just not as good as their previous releases.
I have practically all their releases here, I'd hook you up with some if my internet connection wasn't so shit these days.

Fuck, I was actually hoping someone would mention this album so that I could recommend pic related. Handsome Boy Modeling School was the previous Dan the Automator project that basically gave birth to Deltron 3030. Del tha Funkee Homosapien is featured on like half the tracks too. It's more of a healthy mix of trip hop and straight hip hop.
I've actually been relistening to Deltron 3030 a lot recently, it's a shame their second album didn't match it in terms of quality.

I'm not that far into his work to say yet, but that's the vibe I've been getting after discussing his stuff with other people. It's weird how that always seems to happen with instrumental hip hop producers: their earliest work is always their best and they seem to fall off from there. That's true of a lot of my other favorite producers, including Blockhead, DJ Shadow and RJD2.
