Reposting from last thread.

The problem I've had with my guitar is breaking strings. When I bend the high e string up to a whole step, it has a tendency to break. I've broken it three times in six months. I'm not sure what the problem is. I'm planning on asking an older, professional guitarist about it and go from there. It breaks in the middle. I'm bending at the 8th - 12th and picking right over the center pickup and it breaks somewhere between the two, probably at the pick.

And it's only the e string. Of course, I've fully replaced the strings after breaking that one.

It's a cheap guitar, btw

To the anon last thread doing a refinish: What paint are you applying first?
>>
Hey /gg/, I have never owned a guitar and I can't decide between whether I should go with a hollow body or a semi-hollow body for my first.
Most of the guitarists I look up to play a strat, like deen ween, rivers cuomo, david gilmour, etc, but I also love the blues and Lou Reed played a semi-hollow body. Also, i'd be playing with my girl, who plays a strat, so maybe playing a different guitar will help with the voices not blending together as much. If i got either, they would be lower end like a squire, yamaha pacifica, or oscar schmidt if i dont go with the solid body. Thanks in advance
>>
>>65064465
You want to figure out of you want single coils or humbuckers. Watch some youtube videos comparing the two.
>>
>>65064465
semi-hollow = jazz, wamy sound
hollow = rock, most direct sound

/GG/ is this guitar a meme? Does anyone own a classic player? if yes how hot is the pickups?

I want the old style trem and 65 pickups, but I either spend £1500, or get it in surf green(which I ain't a fan of)/Roadworn(fuck this.

>>
>>65064524
bad meme. no sustain, heavy, shitty tremolo. I know it's probably not what you want to hear but you want a strat.
>>
>>65064561
this, I have 3 of this guitars.
literally the best quality and guitars I ever have, also a good price. good wood, good pickups, everything
>>
>>65064465
The best way to get a guitar with a sound that varies is to get a different pickup type and scale length. Semi hollow is a pretty minor tonal factor. Different amps can help too. You can find HH strats pretty easily, and if you want you can just tune down a half step and capo. An HH strat won't sound much like a strat but if you like the look go for it. The body of your guitar is mostly about looks.

This meme needs to die. It may be physically easier to switch from acoustic to electric but if all the music you want to play is electric buy an electric guitar. Acoustic will not teach you better electric guitar habits, it'll just make you another electric guitar player with a gorilla grip and no sense of muting.

No, they have absolutely horrendous sustain. They were designed for the opposite purpose, dampened jazz and surf sounds.
You can swap pickups for really cheap. The Mustang is a much more fun guitar than the Jazzmaster. Mustang pickups aren't hot at all for single coils but even if you find the single coil sound too bright, a set of Hot Rails/Cool Rails is pretty cheap.

I started on acoustic but there's no way in hell it makes you a better musician. Why would it?

I assume people think it's harder to get away with bad posture on an acoustic guitar. I guess that's true, but that's such an indirect way of saying, "you should learn proper posture from the start."

So, I've fucked around with guitar here or there but never actually learned it. But now I've wanted to sit down and actually learn to use my guitar instead of just having it lean against something as a decoration.Where should I start? Any books or whatever that I should read? How do I git gud at jazz improv. phrasing?

I can memorise progressions, I know my modes and scales, but my solos sound boring and uninspired... halp.
>>
>>65066113
Maybe that's it. I always have hot sweaty hands. Even in the snow. Sometimes they're all that's available. I wasnt a big fan of ernie ball eithern but they have them at best buy. Music stores are getting kinda scarce so i just get what i can. My choice would be DRs, i had a black coated set that lasted forever. They sounded kinda shitty until the black wore off by the pickups from playing. They say they fixed that sound issue somehow but I'd never get the coated ones again.

Is there any chance for a manlet with small hands like me?
Do electric guitars have thinner necks than classical ones?
>>
>>65066275
not that anon, but i have sweaty acidic hands that kill strings fast. my strings get tarnished after 2 hours of use and start getting crusty and nasty in about 2-3 days depending on how much i play. every time i put my guitar away i take some rubbing alcohol, put a few drops in a cloth and twist it around each string and run up and down it, it clears most of the shit off.

i started using baby powder (talc) to keep my hands dry. it does help, but it's a powder and it gets everywhere.

coated strings sound like shit but yea, that's the only set of strings that i can keep on my guitars for months. i hate how they sound and hate how they feel, they feel like i'm playing a string wrapped in a condom. i use them on my practice guitars though.
>>
>>65066297
strat is more typical. Either works, obviously.
>>
>>65066326
Women play guitar, too. There are people with smaller hands than you playing bass. Anyways a thinner neck isn't necessarily going to be more comfortable just because you have small hands. Some people with small hands like chunky as hell necks.

>>
>>65066326
You're fine. You don't need massive hands or fingers to play guitar. The spacing between frets gets smaller the farther up the neck you play anyway. Most of the time the largest stretch I need to do is playing the 3 note per string F major scale in the first position. If you can do that, you're fine.

Piano is a different story, you need pretty large hands to play piano well.
>>
So on guitar, I like to include little half steps. I play the blues, right? and after a lick, I go back a halfstep then forward. Its almost a hammer on, its so fast. Sometimes i do just pull off and hammer back on. Its like a suggestive leading tone. What do yall think of that idea?
>>
>>65066394
Try using lemon oil instead of alcohol. Not the lemon oil mineral oil stuff, actual lemon oil. It's an alkaline that'll prevent corrosion.

Use antiperspirant instead of powder.
>>
>>65066669
it's called chromaticism (i think). just passing tones, i think some jazz guys call it side stepping.

just don't over do it. a little here and there is fine. the main thing with improvising is being able to spell out the chord in your improv, the people listening should be able to tell which chord you're soloing over without any background comping
>>
>>65066915
Speaking of which, what do you guys think of chord-specific licks? I don't know very many because they don't seem useful. Should I try expanding my blues vocabulary to include them?
>>
>>65066964
i've been working on that type of playing for a while now. it depends on the song, really. some songs each chord you need to use chord specific scales and licks, some songs you can just stick to one specific scale

i find chord specific stuff more interesting. the way you have to think while playing is completely different, so it's a bit daunting at first. arpeggios are a good starting point.

Any tips for learning songs by ear?

I just seem to be really bad at it, i got the bad habit of depending exclusively on tabs, and some have been wrong but i didn't even realize and kept playing like an idiot.
>>
>>65069733
Learn trancription
>>
>>65069733
start with Dinosaur Jr solos, they're slow and you'll learn a lot.
>>
>>65069733
- Learn you basic chords (major, minor, 7ths and their movable positions)

- Learn to identify notes on the fretboard (even if you don't memorize it, learn how to identify any note by quickly using octaves)

- Learn the major and minor scale shapes (all positions across the fretboard)

- Learn the pentatonic and blues scale (all 5 positions all across the fretboard)

- Learn all common chord progressions (1-4-5 etc)

Then start with simple rock/blues songs. With blues, you're pretty much guaranteed to only be using pentatonic/blues scales on a single key, most likely with 1-4-5 progressions. Google the key at first until you can get used to the song. Start at the root, find the right fretboard region of the scale being played and slowly go by ear from there.

If you still struggle to get the first notes, find a tab and get the first two or three notes there. Then close the tab and only do the rest by ear.

Keep it slow and steady and sooner than later you'll be seeing improvements.
>>
>>65069862
Oh, and download a program called Transcribe! (there's also a similar one called Amazing Slow Downer). It allows you to select specific parts of a song, keep it on repeat and slow it down while maintaining pitch.

It's very useful to transcribe songs by ear.

Do you guys think I'd have better success if I re-learned guitar left handed? While I'm still beginner level with basically no knowledge due to going on and off since I was a kid, that time has made right feel natural to me even if I'm shit.

Practice singing in pitch, pretty much everyone can sing pretty close to in pitch, when you can match well enough it aides playing by ear hugely. If you can hum a riff, you can hold single notes long enough to find them on the fretboard. Keep doing this and you'll get faster and faster. Soon enough using the fretboard will be almost as easy as humming/singing.
>>
>>65070006
Eh, try both. No reason to commit to either, there's not really any right answer.

I know what it's like to keep the same strings on for 8 months to a year too. Generally keep the same set of strings on my main player for 8-10 months and never clean them. I like the "worn in" feeling I get with playing with them. Maximum comfy. Even though I'm probably just crazy.

Use passing tones, practice going outside the key, record yourself and pick out the elements of your phrasing that sound good to you, and listen to a lot of jazz records to cop licks. If you aren't already doing most of those things you need to ask yourself why you even care to play jazz in the first place.
>>
>>65069862
>>65069733
essentially this. the thing i found by far the most useful though was memorizing the major and minor shapes. i think you'll find that most music falls into major and minor shapes (which include the pentatonic scales)

after that it's essentially just interval training. hearing two notes and just instinctively knowing how far they are away, and where to grab them on the fretboard

I find this ironic insofar as Guthrie is all about pushing guitar players to find their own voice on the instrument instead of just doing what he's doing. If you get hung up on copying him you'll probably find yourself disappointed in your own playing because you're not him. The problem with trying to sound like the man himself is that there's a LOT of theory AND technique to take in at once so it's best to have a well-developed base of either to apply new theoretical or technical concepts as you encounter them.

The reason Govan is able to mimic and express himself so many different styles is because he clearly listens to a plethora of music, not just a handful of shredders. So if you want to have the sort of command over your instrument that he seems to exude over his then practice (and don't use a metronome, use backing tracks to give your practice more musical direction), try to soak up as much theory as you can, and take time to listen to all that music has to offer. That's the short answer to Guthrie-moding, anyway.

You can, but a brighter/less compressed pickup will sound like shit when you hit the distortion and try to get a shred guitar tone out of it (too many overtones).

The p90s in the classic player are hotter and more compressed so they will work better with heavy distortion

It works fine, your tone knob and amp EQ's there for a reason. Sure it's not optimal, but single coils work for distortion, you just have to put more effort into dialing a tone.

Actually scracth that the AF120 is a full hollowbody, but you should be able to play high gain on semi-hollow no problem at all. Eric Johnson used a 335 for a while, and guys like Michael Gira use them in Loud as Fuck situation.

Check out the Hagstrom Viking II for sure, look at this neck profile, that's as thin as you're gonna get on a semi-hollow

A humbucker in the bridge doesn't change the radius, neck profile, volume knob placement (seriously this is the worst position ever) and ergonomics of the body (although strats have no problem in that regard, the cutaways and contours are comfortable)
>>

I like my 24 frets, and my easy fret access.. I'm okay with the small radius, makes it easy to chord too but I generally want a 'fast' neck, whose body and headstock doesn't look too djenty.

I can reach the the tone knob on my RG with my pinky, the volume knob on it is easy to control too. On the other hand, the strat's volume knob is way too close to the strings, I kept hitting it over and over when playing one, it makes strumming awkward.
I can't even think of a guitar I've tried where the volume knob was too far.

hey guys, guitarplayer here. a couple of mates asked me to join their band and replace their bass player, problem is I've never really played bass. tomorrow is our first rehersal together, any pointers or tips about bass? not expecting to master it during the first rehersal and I told my mates that, but I'd appreciate any tips or anything actually. how about muting the other strings? is that gonna be something I should focus on while learning to play bass? thanks guys
>>
>>65074834

Well it's not like I can fix it ..
>>
>>65075038
Muting the strings on bass depends how you play it.
If you use a pick, it's about the same as on a guitar.
If you're using your fingers, you can rest the thumb on a string to pluck the others and mute the lowest one. I know John Myung from Dream Theater also uses his index to mute almost everything, but he uses a 6 string.
If you're playing slap then why are you playing slap if you just started.

Also don't play it as you would play a guitar, focus on the dynamics and provide a support for the rest of the band, not the other way around.

I've seen guys try to down tune starting on the 6th and by the time they're on the 3rd or 2nd the 1st breaks. Also you might have to fuck with the springs in the back, like screw the screws in or out to get the bridge to lay right. It's really a pain in the ass, desu. Once you get everything setup right and do it a bunch, it becomes easier. I think there's a link in the op for a vid..

Pick your favorite string gauge and tuning.
Tell a professional to intonate the guitar and stabilize the trem for that configuration.
If you haven't done that already, do that first. Single most important thing.

Once a floyd has the correct tension for what it's doing and your intonation is good, it'll be rock solid and most retuning can be done at the bridge until the strings have stretched substantially. If you're fighting it to stay in tune when tuning, it isn't set up properly and you're wasting time trying to fight it.

Do you have any counterargument at all other than
>haha wow man you sure are mad but I can't offer anything to defend my side

Sounds like a poor copy of that "IF YOU'RE WEARING A MASTODON SHIRT YOU'RE NOT GETTING THIS GUITAR"

just report and move on.

You don't need 3 pickups for a 5 position switch, for exemple two humbuckers also work.
If the body's not pre-drilled you'll need to be really careful drilling the tune-o-matic bridge as it will lead to intonation issues if you do it wrong.

were you under the impression anyone was asking your permission to play loud or something? that we had to argue some case before your judgement? you dumb little shit

okay i posted these yesterday but didnt see responses in time to respond back, guys said i was using my wrist wrong but i dont know what they meant since i've never really looked up much about how to play properly and just sort of did it, I got a shitty cheap teacher who did basic chords and scales and stuff but he's never said anything about my wrists but then those guys said i'd be fucking up my playing in future if i keep on, what's wrong with how i play, like specifically?

Hey /gg/, I have a VM jazzmaster and need to fix a couple things under the pick guard (the volume pot has a sputter at 7/8 on the dial) and I've heard more generally that the wiring job is pretty shoddy, I want to fix these things, but I've also been toying with changing the tone variable resistor, how difficult would it be to do these things?
I also want to shield it better, seen people using spray on glue and gold foil for this, is it the best thing to do?

Why bother arguing with that idiot?

>HE CAN'T HEAR YOU EVEN IF YOU YELL.

Also, fuck him if he wants to be deaf. In 20 years he's gonna feel really stupid.

Pete Townsend didn't go deaf from loud stage volumes, dummy. He went deaf from earphone use during lengthy studio sessions. Using earphones/earbuds is called "direct injection", and it's literally the very worst thing you can do to your ears aside from stabbing an ice pick through your eardrums. It's why volumes in movie theaters have to be so loud now, dumb shits listen to EVERYTHING with earbuds.
