Howdy, partner!
What you see here began as a series of comedy-centric stories with the concept of an alicorn-ascended Princess Applejack trying to change a mismanaged Equestria for the better by humorously interacting with the other, quite lazy, princesses.
Not to mention a whole bunch of Changelings with nothing better to do but cause mischief.
The whole thing was set in motion by this gem:

She put it together, how could she not? Suddenly Sunset's alive and Chitty is looking for her? Yeah, not complicated.
And think about that for a second. Remember that, right now, if it had been Chrysalis, honest to god Chrysalis, she would have been fine with it. Right now she seriously would sooner put her life or Sunset's life in CHRYSALIS'S hooves if she had to. But it's not, it's Chitania. It's "I don't care about you or your friends or the sanctity of life" Chitania. She knows Chitania only plays this game when she walks away with something.
She's not mad at Sunset, she's mad at herself, and more importantly she's mad at Chitania for playing her. To be fair, we don't know if she threw a rock at her or if it's just flying or something, that last line was ambiguous(Intentionally?), but if she did throw it, we know why. AJ HAS to know, or else she'll never forgive herself.

>After remembering her own events with being 'dead' and what that did to the Queens, and her personal experience of losing someone and never knowing of they're dead or alive with her daughter, Chitty agrees, and Sunset is put under, dreaming of a better day.
>During the procedure, we look into all the previously thought useless techniques Chiania uses to pull it off, and she reminisces about the days long past when she learned them from her fellow changelings.
>Then something goes wrong, of course.
>"Well, fuck."
>Twilight suddenly remembers that whole orb thing, and rushes off to her lab to get the device to let them peer into it. However, when she boots up her computer, something else distracts her. Something that makes her very, very angry.

>Sunset, in a seemingly endless white realm, goes over all her failures and what brought her to this point. During this, she suddenly gets the ability to feel again, but something is wrong. Inside that realm, it seems like something is trying to grab her, even as she begs and pleads for it not to take her, and that she's not ready to go. It continues anyway, but she manages to fight back long enough to destroy all said white of the realm, and then is grabbed by something else in the inky blackness that remains
>Feeling like this the end, she says she's sorry, and begs for forgiveness, as the end consumes her, and a motherly voice tells her to come along.
>Then it tells her to wake the fuck up.
>She jolts up, not dead as she had thought! Not only that, but as Chitania needlessly points out... she's fixed!
>Or, as she puts it...
>"I'M ALIIIIIIIIIIIIVVVEE!"
>She runs off before Chitty can say anything, or collect on their deal, leaving Chitania to realize she essentially is left with nothing, no way to force the matter or collect.
>Sunset runs away, screaming as loud as she can.
>Elsewhere, Aj and Spike hear screaming, and can't quite believe who they think it is. When Spike goes to go check, he gets a facefull of door.

Today was a day for regrets.
That much was obvious. It was obvious to the princesses who watched that single rock fly, unable to stop their friend in time, it was obvious to the spectators who ducked for cover the moment it was let loose, it was even obvious to the smiling lunatic of a mare hanging off the monster who had destroyed Canterlot.
Today was a day for regrets. That much was obvious, especially to the once farmer who's face twisted in horror, when she realized what had happened. When her powers had gotten the better of her yet again, when they had made a fool of her yet again, and gone off.
Her hoof reached out, as if to try to stop it, to take back the stone from the air in a forlorn attempt to call back all she had thrown out, but it was useless. As useless as she had been in Sunset's resurrection. As useless as she had felt when the mare had called her out. Completely useless.
As useless as a stone against unmovable hooves that planted themselves square in the stones path, and took it on without flinching.
The world ceased to be, the city, the spectators, the princesses, and even Sunset herself, all gone. All that there was, no matter what reality said differently, was a small orange princess, and a Titan of a changeling staring her down. The one who's power seeped into the ground and wildly snapped out, and the all, perfectly controlled endless might.
(So... you want a battle, do you?)
They all felt it, even if it could not be seen. Some strange power was bubbling beneath black chitin, just begging for a chance to be let out. The two other princesses could not keep the remorse, or in one such case the disappointment, from their faces. All around them knew what this meant, and what was to come.
Someone had struck Chitania, someone had attacked the Titan. It was a scene that had played out many a time before, in many a different place, setting and cause.
Yet it always ended the same.

The unchained magic, the wild power that had been building fluctuated, causing another fissure to run wild and seek out either the changeling Queen, or the one on her hoof, none could tell.
"You did it for something... but you did it."
A low, earthy chuckle rumbled as much as the stone beneath her did, a spark lighting up the changelings eye much as the magic flickered off her horn. The fissure reached her, but she did not even seem to notice.

The lavender alicorn did not advance, even if her every fiber of her body screamed at her to do so. A combination of stern look from her mentor and her own rapidly failing self control was all that stood between her emotions and the changeling queen.

Her denials bounced off as easily as the stone had earlier, not so much as denting the cocky smirk on the changelings face.

Back to political mode, the tallest princess went. She slipped as easily into it as she did a well worn suit, her voice betraying none of the emotion the others did. Instead, she laid on an air of curiosity, nothing to indicate it mattered in the least.

Either the Queen had been used to this game, or she truly did not care in the least for the praise. Either way, the result was the same, the Queen was already trying to leave.

Applejack had been slipped back, but she had not gone forgotten behind the pair. Brazenly, and without any regard for the gold plated hoof that tried to stop her, she broke forwards, trying to close the distance between them. Instantly, the Queen was back on her guard, and they could feel the electricity in the air return.
(Stay back.)
A hoof slammed down, a ripple rolling through the ground the instant it struck. In the rumble, the orange mare tripped, her hooves tangling all over herself in mid run, but she did not stop. She fumbled her way back to all legs and continued on running.
"Just... just tell me how-"
(Stop it now!)
Another, stronger shockwave not only tripped her, but completely rolled her off her hooves that time. Her friend almost rushed to her aide, only to be stalled by a much less forgiving, long white leg. The alabaster princess would not let Twilight help her, she had to stumble up on her own.
Stumble, she did, no amount of pain or power could stop her. Nothing on earth could stop her.
“Wait! Just... just tell me how-”

That's why, they are so hung up on it. Twilight is shaken by the fact that it shouldn't have happened, despite not really looking into it, from what she knew it should have not been possible at all.
Celestia... is a bit harder to pin down, maybe someone being able to bring someone else back from the dead would upset the balance of life and death and its something that needs to be looked into. Also, while she might have said she'd have to "take things back", deep inside she is realizing she has made an amateur mistake, she's underestimating an opponent and now that opponent has the upper hand and one of her little ponies too, so knowing what happened is the first step in getting that pony back maybe.
With AJ its rather simple... It was CHITTY that did it. Not Twilight figuring out, not Discord just snapping his fingers to be nice, not even some random miracle. It was Chitania, a Queen of the Changelings and they both have one thing in common. They both suck at magic, yet Chitty pulled it off. If Chitty could do it, why couldn't she... why hadn't she? Now it all down to a "I had her first" scenario that really isn't in her favor, there is no upper hand for her to call upon. She is the bad guy in this situation and she doesn't want to accept it. She doesn't want to be Honest with herself.

If there was any being alive who would be afraid when a wave of such stones and rage shot towards them, it most certainly was not the monolithic black titan who stood steady and strong in the face of such an act.

Her friends cries fell on deaf ears, the rush of wind too loud to hear anything over its roar. Nor could her tunneled vision see anything but the yellow target she couldn't look away from, and not at all the free hoof that lifted from the ground.

One swing was all it took, a single strike so fast that it had been nothing but a blink of a streak of black, and every single one of those stones came right back at her.
Though it was impossible for it to be true, any who saw it would swear not a one of them missed.

Power charged again, though from a much different source this time. The other of the two smaller alicorns was already bringing her legendary magical abilities to bare, shining as brightly as her bared teeth in a frantic snarl.
It was only a stern, and unyielding hoof to her shoulder that prevented her from going forwards.

A biting comment, one she surely would have regretted later, almost found its way to her old mentor. It was only a quick wit that noticed that for all her steadiness, the princess was not looking to her that prevented her from acting on that need to lash out.
Instead she noticed that nearly all of those piercing eyes attention was laid squarely on those all around them, and the fear in them was palpable.
Her subjects were all in danger, and it could only get worse from here.

As it to challenge that very notion, the pony rose again, and charged. Running chaotically on all four hooves with head bowed low, horn pointed right for the tall black chest.

One hoof, that's all it took to shake all of Canterlot.

The only one who was unmoved, was the only one she wished to fall.

The Titan never shook against the lashings of magic against her, holding the pony steady with only a single black limb pressed to her head. The hoof pushed down on the much smaller being, nearly buckling her legs with only that move, and nothing short of every bit of her magic kept her from falling.
"Give... her... back.."
Hooves dug trenches as they struggled to press forwards, little paths clawing their way free with every labored step. The unmovable force before her never even wavered, only shaking slightly when the changeling let out a low chuckle.
(This is almost cute-GAH!)
She had expected the pushing, expected the horn to dig slightly into her chitin.
She hadn't expected a random burst of magic to fire off from said horn. Certainly not on such a level it flashed bright enough to blind anyone foolish enough to look at it, and actually leave behind a smoking, scorched bit of chitin in its wake from the point blank shot.

Her still smoking hoof hooked around that very horn, lifting the pony from the ground she so callously weaponized before returning the favor with one quick strike back down.
The process repeated, so fast that none could keep count of just how much, before the Titan tired of the game and hurled the pony back towards her fellow royals.
She came up short, a mere few steps away, but even that was too far.

All that came her way this time, was soft spoken words.

Begging, pleading words.

Angry, desperate words.

She had, and quite clearly at that. That alone was the only reason the Queen had not yet blown her off and continued on her way. Even still, she found it hard to believe.

Even clarified, even with not a single doubt more as to what that could mean, the changeling found she couldn't quite wrap her head around the offer.
"Ah'll take her place."

Neither, it seemed, could her companions.

She glared, without a hint of venom to it, and aimed all of that empty yet stern look right at her fellow element.

The Titan Queen's stare was tellingly blank, nothing given away no matter how much closer the orange mare came to her. No defensive stance, nor worry. She showed nothing, save she was listening.
"Well, what's it gonna be!? You see these wings? You see this horn? Ah'm a dang princess! Now ta' me, that don't mean a gaddang hill o' apples, but Ah'm bettin' to you it's pretty dang big, ain't it? Ah' got a lot of power, and Ah'm not just talkin' magic! So whatever you were gonna get from her, you get from me! You like makin' deals don't you? Specially those where you come out on top. Well... ain't gettin' any higher than this! She's just a bright unicorn, Ah'm a dang princess, everything she is and more! Even neutrally and diplomatically said, there was something chilling about that.

The Queen gave no regard to her words, or any perceived time limit. She took her sweet time thinking it over, mulling it about with the meticulousness of a detective on a hard case. She thought carefully, and slowly.
When she finally brought down her answer, it was every bit as devastating as would a strike in her titan form.

It took the breath from her, just as much as that blow would have, and left her empty inside.
"What... what did you say?"
Her whole world collapsed around her, and she couldn't think clearly anymore. Nothing about what she had heard made sense, nothing about this situation would fit. She must have heard wrong, she told herself. Or this must be a ploy, a way to get more out of the deal, she was sure. This had to be a trick, a trap, or a ruse.
But that wasn't how the Titan worked, and she knew it, as the princess had been so quick to point out.
That wasn't how she got what she wanted.

Even now, even with that finality, she couldn't believe it, wouldn't believe it. She denied it, tried to dance around it, tried to find any answer that would fit when there was no question left to be asked.

She had been through a lot as a princess. Dealt with things she never would have dreamed of before, fought things she never would have before, had to put up with so many things wrong, and shoulder so much responsibility. Somewhere, in the back of her mind, a part of her always insisted it was worth it. Being a princess, as much as she didn't care for the whole mess, had its perks. Some part of her always knew that something, be it the new magic, the new flight, or the new status, would be there if she really needed it. She had a lot more power now, both politically and magically, and some part of her knew that, if for nothing else, she could rely on them in an hour of need. Even if she didn't like it, even if she told herself every single morning that she never would need it and could handle the world just fine without it, it was there.
"It doesn't matter?"

Even it had failed her.
(Goodbye, pony.)
There was nothing left.
She had thrown everything she had at her, offered up everything, and it had been tossed away. She couldn't threaten the Queen, she couldn't fight her, she couldn't bribe her, she couldn't even slow her down.
She couldn't save her student, and from the way she smiled, she didn't even want to be saved.
She had lost, and the Queen was leaving, and nothing could stop her.

Nothing, it seemed, except for that.

That hoof shook as it hung there.

Not a single shred of body language spoke of belief.

Almost like she was knocking the denial away, the pony swung her hoof.

The gasps of the crown, the honest shock written across the faces of the two alicorns behind her, none of that even registered. Nothing around them existed, in that moment. It was only the two of them, and an endless void.

The thought crossed her mind, for what may be the first and last time. The thought of lying to her for that, to gain the pony's trust with an act like this. It would have been hard to keep up an act like that, but all the while... she would have the pony's friendship, through it all. Likely wouldn't have gotten as many stares, or fear. For a time, everything would just be easier, life would come slower, things would not have been so hard.
She too hated to admit it, every bit as much the pony did.
(It would have been a nice lie... for a little bit.)
For a time, life would have been nice, even if none of it was honest.
Things could be easier... and not just for herself.
"Why couldn't you have just lied?"

The smile almost, very nearly, grew.

An eyebrow rose up, but there was no mocking or scorn on the changelings face. No hate, or derision, for the pony looking up at her with hope.

All three had, at one point, made a promise.

I actually loved that touch. He really had AJ try everything, but it just didn't work.
Personally, while I am a little sad I didn't get that new Chitty rumble I wanted, I'm glad it went that route instead of a battle. This was a lot harder hitting than a fight. Like I said, still wish we had gotten that Canterlot Rumble, but I accept it was more important that AJ get confronted by an impossible situation, try what she knows, and come up short. I mean if there has been its never been documented or caught. It would have been so subtle most of us or even none of us would have noticed.
The writer "for" something can't really bitch at another writer for making a story "against" his vision of what he had planned later down the line. He just has to adapt and if things happens they have to scrap the whole thing and go with the flow. We would never know if anyone actually did it unless they confessed and we pinpointed exactly when something took a turn for the negative against the "for" writer...

We keep doing the tease because once again calling back to her arc, we had 2 things we didn't want to do with her, kill her outright and make her a good guy. Closest comparison is one that someone already brought up that she is basically Vegeta. (defeated in ep 35 considered officially good when he moves in with Bulma in ep 103 but still does his own thing).

one specific time I can think of is when someone jumped in and had Cadence fix Twilight, despite all the setup with Spike and Chrysalis. It was written well but we NC'd it because it was out of left field for the setup.
People have also threatened to write against others before when things were going right for someone they don't like or wrong for AJ (the "AJ is not allowed to be sad" group).

We remain murder boner free, for the most part. But you can't expect us all to think the same thing. Someone's going to have the opinion that we should just kill her off or should in the future kill her off. Just like they think we should kill the changelings, or the OC, or whatever. It's fine.
