So lets see whats changed in the past 8 months and where the new season will fit into the rankings now that it's had roughly two weeks to settle.
Just to note. This survey assumes you've at least seen all the episodes, so feel free to make a list if you haven't seen them all and want to see how yours turns out. It just won't be included.

It is a tough problem. I'd rather the episodes be ranked based on our subjective experience than objective quality, so I do consider that anon's list to be valid. On the other hand, I gather we're trying to collect the average opinions of /mlp/ as a whole and including someone who's such a clear outlier when we don't really have that many anons to balance it out would seriously skew the results. On the other hand, pretty much everyone who's posted seems to have some controversial opinions so where do we draw the line?

I'd honestly only draw the line at obvious trolls that like, rank everything in a certain season at the bottom without fail.
I mean, I've seen Secret of My Excess in the bottom five for some people and it is my favorite episode. Is that going to skew results? Probably. But it accurately shows opinion.

At first I was agreeing with not putting his list in, but if he actually watched the episodes and listed them fairly, I don't see why not. No one would throw a fit if someone put all the movies at the very bottom of their list. Everyone's already called him a fucking faggot for his shit opinions, but we're really only compiling lists of all our shit opinions anyway.

The whole shebang is about choosing what you like most, not trying to somewhat objectively judge each and every episode. Not liking anything past MMC might be a shit opinion and you can disagree as much as you want, but it is an opinion anyways. The guy did see all the episodes, his onions are valid. Compare it to that one guy who just went no opinion on the episodes and had half of them in 65th place or so.
So yeah imo we should count it.
I'm going to leave that guy's list in. I just can't justify leaving someone out cause they like the show differently than we do. As long as there's effort and reasoning behind a list and they've seen all the pony I'll allow it. That's the criteria I set for myself before starting anyway. I'll still take out really obvious bait though.

There is no effort in the later three seasons though. We judge each episode on an individual basis, he is simply throwing entire seasons underneath other seasons because he felt differently when they aired. That skews the entire ranking and it does not because the person genuinely feels each episode is worse, but because of unwillingness to budge in actually evaluating them.
This will be my last comment on the matter, I simply want to reiterate it because people are acting like his survey is equivalent to others when it isn't in the slightest. He is comparing one season to another, not one episode to another, and that is not at all what most other people are doing.

It seemed like he ordered the episodes within the lower seasons though. That's part of what made me want to keep it in over not. Sure there's still the 2 seasons above all the others, but the effort was made in each part otherwise.

How's that effort? Give me some random list in which I need to mix some while keeping most of the order of each season/blocks etc. That's not hard to do at all. Everyone here has some preferences with choosing which season is the best (and this time around it seems S1) but at least there is some fair judgement comparing each episode lose from seasons. This is a guy who lost the magic but is still all about 'the ride never ends', blindly choosing through seasons and not considering 'what if episode x aired a few years earlier or episode y a few years later? Would I still like or dislike it?'.

It seems like he watched all the episodes by the way the mix of season 4 and 5 are ranked. A lot of them seem sensibly ordered out of those to me if you take into account the anti Twilicorn bias he appears to have. Meaning he had to put in the effort to ensure it turned out that way. Whether it's hard or not isn't as relevant to me as the fact that the effort was put forward to give a genuine opinion. If I'm looking to make a representative survey of the episode ranking on /mlp/ then that kind of opinion should be a part of it cause there's Anons on /mlp/ that genuinely hold to that opinion. Alright, I'm fed up with the butthurt in this thread just because someone voiced an opinion you don't like. The guy who did the list does prefer the first two seasons over the others, big fucking deal. He still watched them all and sorted them properly. If it doesn't enforce your anti-nostalgia movement then tough fucking luck, the survey is about what episodes /mlp/ likes the most and if you can't deal with the fact that 1 in 50 anons here might be a faustfag so much that you want to disregard his opinion then you should reconsider going back to your local circlejerk that raised you.
You are free to disagree that just because there isn't that x01 or x02 doesn't make the episode worse than if it was there, but seriously trying to push for removing the vote is pathetic. And yes, no fucking shit Sherlock, with a clear goal in mind you can easily rig yourself the outcome however you want it. You can even skip the sorter and just write it yourself. That doesn't mean opinions you don't like are fake or took little effort to create.

That is all I wanted clarity on and not a single person has managed to argue that point, at least in a way I find satisfactory. I do not see the list as genuine because I do not believe he could compare each individual episode from 3,4,5 and explain why HE finds them worse than S1/2. I do not mind if the reasons are personal I just do not believe that he could actually do so. Everyone else (I assume), even if they preferred earlier seasons, compared each individual episode in making their list. To me, it seems he just looked at the season for a large number of his choices and that is not what the rest of the information is based on.
If he wants s1/s2 to be on the top? Swell. I just want some reason to believe that he actually preferred all those episodes and did not merely look at the show on a season by season basis.

To be clear, if he put all of season 4 and 5 on the top, I'd still be skeptical of whether he truly evaluated the episodes. I just have trouble wrapping my head around it. He clearly put effort into evaluating episodes 53-117, and episodes 1-52, but I can't tell for sure that he actually compared those two to each other.

Princess Spike is just legendarily terrible. I could go on for a long time why the episode is fundamentally flawed but I won't. It however is unique because I firmly believe it is one of the episodes that could not be salvaged at all. Literally everything about it isn't a good idea and shows that there was little thought given to continuity.
Equestria Games was robbed, though. That's a great Spike episode all things considered, and that's shit people want.

I kind of feel the same for Just for Sidekicks. Spike had some good stuff there I think. Equestria Games cringy Spike and the wasted potential of ponies playing sports not being showed as much probably stung that episode to death for most.

Taken as a whole and everything that happened in the episode it not only was a great Spike episode, but also one of the best morals in the entire series.
It is criminally underrated and honestly I see it being ranked so low as proof the fandom just plain doesn't like Spike as a whole for the most part and that nothing will be good enough for them.
Coincidentally, Just for Sidekicks and Equestria Games in addition to a few other episodes provide context for why Princess Spike was so universally disliked.

Probably close to >>25921153 but I imagine even less controversial. Hilariously when Reddit did this survey they found that the character with the least liked episodes was Apple Bloom, as Spike had a few episodes rated at or above middling while she had none.
But as of right now I don't think the fandom does. Personally I just would be fine with any sort of screen time that isn't him being an idiot. He was barely even around in S5 in many episodes, only had one very bad episode that did nothing for him to himself, and did very little in most of the season. It's very sad.

I really want a Spike story that is just about Spike for once. For fucks sakes new characters that are introduced in one or two episodes get more explanations and motivations for things than he does. And let's not even mention that he's the only member of the main cast of characters that has never had a song.
Making him grow up a bit and realize his place might be a good thing. I remember Jim Miller said he had ideas about him growing up and dealing with teenage problems. Might be good but don't know if it's coming with S6 or what, hard to read Miller sometimes.
But fear God, please do not let Neal Dusedau touch his episodes again. Honestly, don't let him write at all for this show. Both of his episodes are definitely in my bottom three, and I'm a very lenient person that sometimes makes a lot of excuses for the show. But his episodes are garbage.

Probably a big factor is that I was never really that adverse to Twilicorn in the first place. I would have preferred she had stayed a unicorn, but her gaining wings and becoming princess didn't necessarily clash with my perception of where I wanted her character to go. Not the biggest fan of how they handled it afterwards, but I don't see it as a mark against the episode itself.
As for the episode itself it's basically two things - The songs and the Emooooootiooooons

I'm a sucker for musical episodes and all the songs are catchy as fuck and some of the best of the series, with Celestia's Ballad being my absolute favorite song of the entire series.

Out of all the crazy, finale scenarios in the show, I feel the most invested in this one's purely about emotional stakes. RoH goes along simliar lines in that the Mane 6 lose their true selves and they have to regain it, but it's against the backdrop of a world-ending disaster. That's not a knock on RoH, I just really like that in MMC we don't worry about the Mane 6 returning to themselves because of external reasons related to saving the world, but solely because we really care for these characters.
It's sad when they're all out of their element. It's heartbreaking when Twilight realizes the full extent of what she did. So when things start to turn around, it's even more impactful. The happy, bright moments becomes even more happy and bright. Every single time A True, True Friend plays I can't help but smile like a motherfucker. And when Twilight is teleported to that Ether place, it's truly fucking magical. To see Celestia walk with Twilight and sing about how proud she is of her while showing everything that's happened really tugs on my heart. It's just fucking transcendental. Like damn, at the time I had been following these characters and the fandom for over a year and a half and to see all those moments pass by it's just like - Damn, I don't even know.
That's not to say the episode is perfect. There definitely are issues with bits of dialogue, the pacing, and pieces of the plot, but the whole experience is so overwhelming it overshadows the flaws for me.

It's not that the list takes that long as it is it takes me way too long to make a list. Sometimes it's really hard to choose an episode over the other and it just takes me forever to choose. I'll change/add certain criteria for episode match-ups and then drop them for others. It doesn't help I haven't seen a lot of episodes recently. I tried to binge watch the entire series, but it's been really busy for the past month and I won't have internet for 2 weeks so I had to make a list now. It's fine though, the list I made gives an adequate idea of my rankings. The stuff I don't quite agree with is still close enough to the general position I would ideally put them in.

It is clearly following the efficient merge-sort algorithm for ranking and saves me a lot of effort doing the same thing by hand. I would have preferred it shuffle the episodes ahead of time though so as to reduce risk of placing two-parters next to one another just because (even though thats likely where they would have ended up anyways).

I'm very thankful to the guy that made the initial sorter for the characters that were swapped out for episodes for this, and even more so for the kind Anons that helped modify the sorter for me over the last three times I did this. I don't have any idea how to code for html or java outside of adding items to the array, so I have to rely on help from them to make the sorting easier.
I left the randomized one out partially because I wanted everyone to use the same sorter, but I think it helps to sort inside a season first before having to compare everything in the series. Also I may have forgotten that modified sorter was there until you mentioned it. I could link it as an option from the initial sorter if Anons want a randomized start.

I'm rather happy looking back on my list and seeing just how few episodes I actually dislike. I had to go way down the list, and even then I still enjoy them.
Two standout episodes for me over the past few months were related to real life events that I was going through, but even those got pushed near the middle of the list.

I wanted to have an episode where he meets Garble again and he's "redeemed." But that would have to be separate from another episode where he comes to terms with being a dragon and grows physically.

An episode that highlights what he's best at, sticking his neck out for others simply because he feels it's the right thing to do. He can be the support for another character while still being the main focus of the episode. He's great at knowing what needs to be done and understanding why a conflict has arisen, if they acknowledge that in an episode but have that utilized in a way that teaches Spike something, they'd have a fabulous episode. Instead, they just dismiss that he's often the only sane one in the group and paint him as a stupid kid in his solo episodes.
The beginning and end of Secret of my Excess, and much of Dog and Pony Show is what a good Spike episode would like, all that needs to be done is tie the 'lesson' back into him.

I think I may have an idea as to why those are different. I never verified with the guy that ran the survey exactly what his central characters were for each episode and just went off the comments in his planning thread on /r/mylittlepony.
