I think it was just because they wanted to go a different way with the other characters. At the time, Pinkie and Rainbow were incredibly marketable, it was better to fit them in. And I thought "Twilight" had to change because of a bunch of popular horny vampire novels.

And Spike. But that's more of a name thing, and the fact that unlike other Hasbro brands, they never made an attempt to really carry over many characters from previous generations. That's what Lauren hoped to change, and then in an interview, I believe Hasbro said they were going to do so too. Keep the "Mane 6" as it is.

They're just improving the animation and making it sleeker, sharper, and better looking also make it have a smoother and more graceful flow. They aren't going to change any designs, voices, characters, or writers. MLP is safe and since this gen was such a success they next gen will follow up fast and have the same (if not related) characters in and involved. I'm an animator myself and I'll be sure to tell you guys that Hasbro and DHX wouldn't even dare think about messing up a winning formula like MLP.

It's not the same for comics as IDW does more for the comics than DHX does for the show. DHX makes the show and hands it back to Hasbro, while IDW handles everything themselves, from production to printing to distribution. It take quite a lot of money for very little return to handle all of that in-house, as comics don't really make money.

One of the reasons that was published was due to licensing rights, as in rights to the old licensing. G4 is practically G1, G2 and even G3 combinded. Lauren, no surprise was really nostalgic for G1 but allot of those properties were tied down to other animation studios. Many of those properties however were required. This is why we have been seeing more g1 characters pop up in latter seasons.
The other part of the story is branding old characters to the new format, allot of changes were made. Then Title licencing and preexisting trademarks IE Selene, despite being greek myth has been trademarked under another company. So name change to Luna.

If anything this is confirmation that G5 will be on the way in the next 2-5 years. I imagine they'll let FIM cool for a year after the movie. Until it stops selling on VOD they'll be able to move FIM toys and they wouldn't want to oversaturate the market or confuse consumers. I imagine we'll see G5 with a new art style and characters, but not until 2019/20, at this rate.

MLP: FiM will have 9 seasons before being discontinued for the new generation.
However, the current plan is to start airing the new generation at the same time as season 8 of FiM. Then slowly transition over the course of the final two seasons using cross-overs and character interaction between casts.
Gen 4.5 (I really can't call it gen 5 after hearing the basic plan) will have a new main cast with the cast of FiM acting as secondary characters and will sport a similar but more dynamic art and animation style.
Gen 4.5 will also be more action-adventure oriented than FiM, though SoL elements will still exist the focus will be on the action and world-building in an attempt to make the franchise more 'inclusive' and less girl-centric.
The cast of gen 4.5 is currently planned to be 6 characters much like the original main cast of FiM, however current plans involve a mixed gender cast rather than a purely female one as part of the attempt to make the brand more gender neutral and broaden the audience.
That's all I can tell you right now, it's all still in very early stages and anything could end up changing at this point. Expect a serious announcement some time next year during the airing of season 7. That is when Hasbro plans to start hyping up the new series, though there may be some tentative teaser announcements during this year but they will be quite vague, merely statements that a new series in the MLP brand is being worked on and more information will come soon. The real info won't be announced until next year though.

I just felt like sharing some information I have been privy to lately.
The new cast are currently planned to be brand new characters that are not in FiM at all. Also there will be no Spike equivalent, the current decision is that his role is not really necessary for what is being planned so they've essentially cut the idea of a 'Spike' character in G4.5 for now.

Guardians of Harmony is a spin-off series planned to run for 1 season (at least initially). It will begin airing half way through next year and will cover the hiatus between season 7 and season 8. The main goal of GoH is to introduce the new artstyle of 4.5 and bridge the gap between the two generations. It will star the mane 6 but over the course of it's run (or at least, the run of season 1, they are leaving it open for more seasons) will introduce the main cast of 4.5. GoH has the same tone and style as 4.5 is planned to have but is not currently meant to be anything more than a bridge between the two generations.
I guess that if you were to label 4.5 as G5 (which it officially is) then GoH is the official G4.5. However it really feels like it's own thing, while it uses characters from both the current and new gen it is designed to be independent from both and won't directly interact with either generation (much like Equestria Girls, GoH will essentially be it's own canon separate from the main series).
