Would you change your opinion of EQG if they moved the story direction from cliché high school tropes to something a little more fantasy-oriented, sort of like a kid friendly Buffy the Vampire Slayer? One could argue that it is like that now, but it's like 90% mundane and 10% fantasy, and I'm thinking more of a 60/40 split in favor of fantasy and action.
EQG needed to have its own world as a setting, rather than a pastel version of ours. It wouldn't have to even be modern. It could even be an exact copy of Equestria, but with people instead of horsies.

I honestly think they're going in a more fantasy/action direction with the new EQG movie. If so, I will be pleased, because yeah the high school setting was nice for the first two movies but they needed to go somewhere new and try new genres to keep it fresh.

It would make it less painfully moronic, but that's only turning a steaming pile of rancid shit into a pile of shit. The fact is the setting is fundamentally flawed; the mere existence of the 'human world' raises massive questions and problems in the setting and lore.
Moreover, if we move it away from the high school cliche, what is EqG's reason for existing in the first place? Without the cashgrab backing, why shouldn't it be set in Equestria in the first place? What purpose is there in telling the story set in a world that is meaningless to the rest of the show and has severe problems of its own?
It would be less insultingly dumb, but that would not make it good.
