Also, Hasbro has had MLP toylines that have failed. Remember the My Little Pony POPS? No? Well, they were a toyline introduced in 2014 where you could customize your own pony. Pic related. It failed. Hard. It didn't sell with little girls and bronies didn't want it, half of the releases didn't even make it to America! They were cheaply made too. Hasbro has learned from their mistakes, and they're trying out things that will please all consumers. The brushable dolls are an unstoppable monopoly, they'll ALWAYS sell. EQG, while failing in the doll department, just released a brand expansion that has pleased just about everyone (the minis) the PlaySkool ponies sell well, and everything else sells extremely well too. There have been failed toylines, yes, but Hasbro will just introduce another one that will do even better.
In short, the ride will never end.

The only time I think we need to worry is when the brushables stop selling. They've been the "core" of My Little Pony forever and they're really the top priority with MLP as a whole. As the GOH figures may look cool, the brushables will always be the "main" figures for MLP. Once those start declining, THAT'S when we can start talking about the shows cancellation. They're MLP's bread and butter.
But, Hasbro has started introducing new brushables by the dozen, and just introduced a new kind of brushable: the articulated ones. That has been a great source of income for Hasbro, as those sell well too. (Pic Related)
MLP isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Even if GOH fails, just know: they'll always introduce another spin off line just like My Little Pony POP.

No one asked for it. While in theory, a buildable My Little Pony sounds awesome, they just didn't resonate with really any audience. They're still around but it's on life support. Hasbro isn't promoting it like it once did and most of the toys are on clearance. Hasbro recently gave the line a reboot and it's now under the name "Design a Pony" but they'll be gone by next year.

They were promoted for the first wave. Second wave all promotion disappeared. The audience was little girls, and there were some brony fan favorites included in the line (Lyra, Dr Whooves, Sunset Shimmer) but other then that, not really anyone. They mostly collected dust on store shelves. They're a less superior counterpart to the Blind Bags, which sell out like crazy. The failure of the POPS was probably the reason for the creation of the Friendship Is Magic Collection toyline, which has sold a ton of money since little kids love Blind Bags and bronies love show accurate toys! The Sweet Apple Acres barn was actually one of the most popular toys sold on Amazon during the Christmas season.

It's tradition every year, Hasbro releases a castle playset based off of something that happened recently in the show. 2012 it was the Royal Wedding, 2013 it was Twilight's new Castle, 2014 it was Twilight's castle again, 2015 it was Celestia's castle, and this year it will be Cadance's castle that comes with Flurry Heart. These always sell amazingly during the Christmas season so I see no reason why this will be different. There is also a talking Flurry Heart baby toy which will most likely sell well, some brushables, the new Friendship Is Magic Collection line, the EG Minis and maybe Legend of Everfree but I doubt it, Blind Bags, and some assorted licensed stuff will probably sell well too. But GOH will no doubt sell great with bronies, though I'm not too sure with the target audience.
MLP has it good this year. It'll do just fine.

It seems pretty easily explained to me IMO. Most probably they ARE making a season 7, but the poor (actually plummeting) ratings of FIM on discovery family probably means hasbro is skittish about continuing to show FIM there.
They're probably trying to decide if they want to keep showing it on Discovery family or put it on Netflix like they are with Legend of everfree, and they can't announce S7 until they make the decision.
the sad thing is, I'm pretty sure once they put it on netflix hasbro is going to come down HARD on people putting MLP up on youtube and daily motion.
