I am an aspiring ar tfag
I need help with making my drawings more cleaner and polished. I just don't know a good way of going about it.
Pic related is one of my drawings.

>>27643046
I dunno, try lining it. Your sketch there seems pretty good as it is.
>>

I know i didn't point it out in the description, but do the hooves seem a bit small? Or are they okay?
>>

>>27643101
It depends I guess, normally I'd say yes, but even so you seem to have a unique style going on with the noze and weirdly shaped ear. Isn't this pony supposed to be a doll? Her having stubby hooves would make a bit more sense in that case.
>>
>>27643801
yeah shes supposed to b e a doll...

>>
>>27643801
Oh and thank you for the feedback! I really want to improve on my art, and I get little to no feedback on my art...so thank you!
>>
Final bump in case anyone has something to comment...

If you're looking for clean, get your linework on. Find a good inking pen and go to town, or drop a new layer on your file and line that shit up. If you're wanting to stay sketchy and be cleaner like... Less 20-strokes-a-curve on the first pass or whatever? That's just gonna take time and practice or whatevs, and there's nothing wrong with what you got going at the moment.Don't worry about it too much for now. It'll come.

Also, unrelated to question, but just for general artiness, try doing poses you know are gonna be a pain in the butt. Stuff from the back, stuff where the head's gonna be pointed off in odd angles where you can't necessarily see all the facial features, etc. Leave your comfort zone. It's not quite as fun as drawing cute things you're already good at, but it'll help in the long run.
>>
>>27644598
I have some questions...I use Sai and I have no idea how to get new pens...I can look it up, but I dont know any pens that would help me make it look clean...But yes, I do like the whole sketchy style.

And also, do you think it is a good idea to use references for those uncomfortable poses?

Also thank you VERY MUCH for giving me advice...
>>
>>27644671
SAI's fun. For pens, you can either make them yourself or pick up someone else's pen pack. When I was first learning to use it, I picked up Onta's brush pack from LK's lessons.
http://www.mediafire.com/download/rl49249gp44dm92/OBP.rar if you're interested.

For the sake of using as an exercise in anatomy and perspective, I'd say do the best you can, see if you can figure out what doesn't look right with what you've done and adjust it, but if you can't figure out how to get something to look how you think it should, don't hesitate to pull some references. No point in torturing yourself when a few minutes of googling can take 'why the hell isn't this working' to 'oh DUH, it bends the other way'. Never ever ever feel like you can't use references of any type.
>>
>>27644708
Okie, I understand only use refrenceses when I'm stuck on a drawings' anatomy...And I will try and see if I can download at put that into sai...

Really, thank you!! I didn't think I'd get someone on 4chan giving me THIS much advice and help! Thank you!!
>>
>>27644767
More like use references when you need 'em, but whatever ends up working for you.

And no prob. We're not all shitty bastards all the time. Just most of us most of the time. Go art some arts, bud.
>>
>>27644795
I will, and maybe you'll see my art around this board!

Thank you!!

>>
>>27645675
Digital drawing takes a good while to get used to, but that's par for the course. In fact, it really feels like learning to draw all over again. Don't discouraged, though. That's where most everyone fails, is in the patience. Just keep practicing long and hard enough and you'll get to where you want to be. You're looking pretty solid already, pal. Just mind the advice up top, stick with it and you're set.
>>
>>27643046
>>27645562
Anon, drop the chicken scratch "sketch" look; that form of "art style" will only hinder your progress later on.
You need to practice smooth, continuous lines, which will boost your line confidence and eye coordination.

>>27645636
>>27645640
The program you use hardly matters, they're just tools. The more you use them, the better you get at them.
That being said, photoshop, sai, and gimp are the main programs that people use, so there's more tutorials on those programs than others.
Sai is a program made for art, while photoshop can be used for art. Gimp is the retarded cousin, but I've seen people make great shit with it.
Again, the output of the tool depends on your skill; if you're shit then it doesn't matter what program you use because it's going to be shit regardless.

>>
>>27645741
Speaking of tools, you'll be able to ride a professional career on normal tablets. The Wacom Intuos line rules, and is the general professional standard. The Cintiqs (real expensive moniter tablets you draw directly on) are sick as hell but will not make you a better artist. What you're buying those for is for speed, usually. Anything that can be done on a cintiq can be done with Intuos. They're just another tool, like anon said. It's up to the individual to make it work.

Adorable.

I like how loose your line is for sketching, you just need some confidence and to keep practicing. Go into your drawing program, make a new layer and try outlining a few quick sketches.

One main tip i'd give is, try not to do this on the right of my picture. Going from thin to thick on every line. It seems common when drawing on a tablet and it makes the form look very weak and flat. Keep the line consistent.

Keep it up. Like with everything in drawing, you'll find your stride once you've practiced enough.

>>
>>27646000
Thank you!! I didn't know I was drawing the little patch on Raggies head wrong...ill be sure to fix it up and out line a sketch...but I just really don't know how, like, how do you make a sketch into straight dark likes??
>>
>>27646687
I don't mind! I needed help drawing Raggie so the CrEaTor of Raggie showed up and helped me out! It was really sweet of him/her! (Don't know the artists gender.)
>>
>>27647382
I don't think he was talking about the patch, just the line weight. See, when you draw with a tablet, most of the time they can detect the pressure you're using, and will adjust how thick the line is accordingly. He's just saying when you do draw linework, keep the pressure (and thus the line weight) consistent.

As for how to outline your sketch in SAI; add another layer to your file and click it. You can then draw over that layer without messing up your original sketch. Use the sketch as a guideline for where a single, solid line should go. Pick a brush with nice, dark, high opacity strokes, and try to get each curve done in one continuous motion. If it doesn't look how you want when you've finished the stroke, hit undo and try it again. If you've got spare buttons on your tablet near where your other hand rests, I'd suggest binding the undo command to one.
>>
>>27647512
>>27647382
Oh, follow up to this about line weight; if you use high stabilizer settings in SAI, but your actual stroke is faster than the program's, and you have pen pressure->line weight functionality, it'll end up tapering off like crazy after you pick up your stylus, so watch for that. Try to avoid high stabilizers if you can. As big a fan of 'use whatever tools are at your disposal' as I am, that will end up hindering you some later on.
>>
>>27647512
>>27647536
Got it! Okay, pressure on my pad is an important thing to keep in mind! I'll see if I can put these things into my drawing of Raggie, If this thread isn't dead yet, I'll post it here...
>>
Other artfag here (not OP), and I recently tried out Sai. I'm shocked to find out smooth drawing is. It's smooth, like really smooth. I can compare the situation to just finding out you could use lubricant, when all this time I've been going raw masturbation wise. It is a shame, I actually like using Krita. All the features fleshed out the program perfectly. Krita is a top of the line painting program, but suffers from rugged, slow brush speed. Like I said, Krita is great for painting- it has a full array of convenient painting tools and other nifty features- and I would recommend it fully someone who ISN'T a beginner.

>>
>>27650333
take brave long strokes.
don't try to outline with multi-able small strokes.

example
her ears you should do it with 2 line strokes.
if right handed
you start from the top tip of her ear. and draw the right line with one stroke. then do the one on the left with one stroke that's.

its always better if you draw line toward you not away from you.
remember that you can mirror / rotate the image to get a good position to start the line stroke.

you can also explore the vector option if you want.
>>
>>27651713
Draw slower, steady your hand, and repeat strokes if it doesn't seem right. I notice that you seem to use a "scratch like" drawing technique, which is good for sketching, but I suggest not to do when lining. The stabilizers in Sai help too.

I'm not an artist or anything, but I know that using longer strokes helps a lot with making your work look cleaner. Simple curves like the inner ear and the patches could be done with one stroke easily, but it's very clear that it's done with multiple.

I could actually just be talking out of my asshole.
If I'm just being a retard then I guess try analyzing sketches of good artists that you like and see what they do differently than you.

If you use a fuckton of detail it might stand out from the rest of the picture. Be wary of that.

I'm telling you this because I look at a fuckton of porn, and you can tell when an artist focused most of the detail in one part of the image and sortof skimps on the rest. I just find it uncanny sometimes. Other times you can barely notice it.

you have a rough sketch, when your sketch is so your imagination is putting the picture together. the point of learning how to sketch with fewer, more confident lines is to clearly establish where you want those lines to be for when you start to ink. At this stage it'll usually feel like your inked version looks a lot worse to you, thats natural.
It looks fine so far, you'll have to learn how to fine tune your process and develop muscle memory. Tweaking your tools to do what you want will help too.

just take it slow and dont worry too much about the end result.
>>
>>27658336
